There is no one right thing to say at such a heartwrenching time, but I don't think that hateful rhetoric like Neil's has a place right now. In contrast, I think Adam's remarks are beautiful and just so Adam. He has a heart as big as the world - one reason I love him so much. I think Gokey was being hateful and out of place, trying to take advantage of this tragedy to attack laicism in school, which is a basic human rights matter. If I ever have kids, I don't want them to learn in school that their family is totally wrong. And Adam probably thinks the same, but he is a public figure and he should be more careful than Neil. I agree. Throughout history, religion has been the cause of many wars, has resulted in the persecution and torture of scientists and anyone else who challenges it, and is one of the primary reasons that gay people have suffered discrimination and brutal treatment around the world, so when someone implies that it's what we need to make the world all better, I (and Neil) have a right to dissent.

I love Adam's responses to today's tragedy. Yes, he has a big heart, and I will be interested to see if he, or any of the other performers tonight, say anything or dedicate songs to what happened. Mad World would be a great fit, although I don't know if Adam wants to go there in this performance. By the way, the tweet below describes why I want to get a degree in Mental Health Counseling. I would love to work with first responders and others who experience this kind of trauma. So awful. Stomp. Clap. @jctweet2 Can't imagine the horror of the first responders who walked into the scene of all those dead children. They'll never get over that tragedy. I don't even know how you go on with a Jingle Ball.

I can't believe I am defending Gokey, but... I think his comment was a heartfelt response to the tragedy. He probably truly believes that mention of God in schools and school prayer would bring children closer to the Deity that he holds to be all important to this world. And perhaps provide some measure of protection?
Whether I hold the same beliefs, I respect that he is processing this tragedy as best he can, as we all are.

Neil should have left off the F moron.. the rest would have been fine. He simply goes too far because of his arrogance. Whoa. I don't think it's arrogance, I think he just doesn't mince words. It's lack of diplomacy, IMO. His brother always says he doesn't have a filter (he obviously does), and I think Neil is the one who really doesn't have one.

I just hate when all Christianity (or whatever religion) gets dumped on because of right wing crazies.
