mzsue,
All this old age crap eh!! Even when not that old right!!
Okay been there myself with this plantar fasciitis issue. Barely being able to hobble to the bathroom in the middle of the night or morning...CRAZY!!
I have had two kinds of treatment.... self administered remedies recommended by my doctor and shock wave treatments.
I tried the knee high sock splints that you velcro your foot in a dorsiflexion position. You are right, sleep is affected, so I gave up on that at night. But when I was watching tv at night I put my legs up and wore the sock splints. I did the golf ball bit ...gave up on that.
So the instructions from my doctor that did work FOR ME:
(not sure about you...but anything is worth a try right.)
Stretching and rotating my feet in bed
prior to putting ANY weight on my feet, even in the middle of the night, when needing to be up for the washroom. It gets the blood flowing to that area and warms up the muscles in the foot. Plantar/dorsiflex and then rotate the ankles.
Then when I got up for the day, I
very slowly ...
really stretched the feet through those same positions.
A huge change was never walking in bare feet from bed to bathroom, and I wear slippers all the time in the house. I never travel without my slippers as well. My brother gave me pair from Costco years ago. Everyone in my siblings' families wears this brand as they are so comfyand they inexpensive, fabulously designed slippers. (
slight heel raise ...not flat and a bit soft not stiff)) Hey I would pay anything for a good feeling slipper, so cost was not the issue ...the design is the issue. I must admit the newer types are not quite as good as the older version but still better than anything else I have tried to find for years. I have a stockpile of them as you never know... if and when... Costco will stock them. My husband dislocated his ankle and hobbling with a bare foot on crutches ruined the good foot...the solution and speedy recovery was ...buying him the man's slipper of the same type I had.
They are called NUKNUUK, and are made in Quebec Canada try
www.nuknuuk.com (got it off the box...price was 25.99) The beige insides are best as the black furry insides when damp transfers grey to white socks/feet. hah picky I guess.
Also I bought Noat shoes...for casual wear. I still wear style shoes but have moved to smaller heels.
Just before my London trip to see Queenbert, I was sensing a bit of concern so I went to my Chiropractor, whom I see for active release therapy for sciatica problems (athletics and a car accident...long stories). He also does shock treatments for plantar fasciitis problems. I wanted a quick solution before any real problem resurfaced. I went a lot of times, but it was covered by my health care plan. I knew I would be walking a ton in London. I have not had on ounce of problem since, but I still am respectful of not walking in barefeet, except out of the shower tub etc. At the chiropractors suggestion I bought birkenstock sandals as they have models for very narrow feet. My girlfriend swears by them for her feet, and I resisted as they are not that stylish (although they do have some styles and colors that can work for casual wear).
