They were actors as singers, not singers as actors. This statement has been true for decades. But in the olden days of movie musicals, they hired real singers to record the vocals so the Hollywood actors could lip synch (famous examples: Deborah Kerr in King and I, Natalie Wood in West Side Story, Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady). More recently, it is not a requirement that stars in musicals actually sing well and are not dubbed over with a real singer (Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd, etc., never ending). Sadly, I guess many people are happy with mediocre singing if the acting is good. :-/ I didn't realize that Hugh Jackman is in the movie, IMO he can sings since he's a broadway actor as well. Maybe in Adam's POV, Hugh's not good enough for Opera :-/ or maybe Adam forgot that there's Hugh Jackman in the movie.. ;D |
