It has been said on this board that the trend is the number of album sold will be declining. If that is the case, what will be the new business model for a record company do you think? The old (or maybe existing) model is the record label spends on making a new album, promoting and marketing and distributing it. They will get returns from the sales of the album, merchandise, and what else?
I posted this in the numbers thread some time ago, but you might find it interesting and relevant to your question.
There is an in-depth industry report published by IFPI, called "Investing In Music", which came out last Nov:
" Investing in Music' is published today by IFPI, representing the recording industry worldwide, in association with WIN, representing independent labels internationally. With fresh data and scores of case studies, the report outlines the evolving and enduring partnership between labels and artists in the digital world.
Alison Wenham, chair of WIN, says: "Today, the relationship between the artists performing music and the investors supporting them has subtly changed and is continuing to evolve. The traditional model of significant advances and marketing support from larger record companies to artists remains widely in place, but there is now a greater emphasis on partnership, shared skills and shared revenues. "

And, here is another rollingstone article called "The New Economics of the Music Industry", outlining some of the major income sources for artists and record companies in the digital age, with numbers breakdown to show how much of a slice they each get:

The old (or maybe existing) model is the record label spends on making a new album, promoting and marketing and distributing it. They will get returns from the sales of the album, merchandise, and what else? Good question! I know when you see someone like XTina selling like crap or KE$HA, who had a #1 single & she released during one of the highest selling weeks of the year, barely beating out Adam's opening week, well the labels are in trouble! Looks like it will be some form of use charge -- subscriptions, micropayments, intermediaries paying for content (TV model), etc. That is why they created VEVO and why the labels support Spotify. This is the second time that the music industry needed to restructure. 1. Conversion from sheet music sales to radio/recorded music sales -- started in 1920's but did not shift until 1950's. 2. Digital conversion -- started in the 1980's but will not shift fully until 2010's. Oddly, both took about 30 years because the status quo is hard to change when the established interests are still making money. Hopefully, the labels will evolve. But if they fail to evolve, they will be replaced by new companies that Sony, Disney, Universal, etc will buy or start.

Hopefully this isn't too OT, but I remember a few days ago someone was asking about attitudes toward homosexuality in Vietnam. This article appeared on today's NY Times website. It's about a series of photos that a Vietnamese photographer took of gay and lesbian couples. It also talks about attitudes toward homosexuality in Vietnam: “In other countries, the stigma is from the society, but in Vietnam, the stigma comes from the family.” Here's the link: lens.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/01/07/real-faces-real-people-real-love-in-vietnam/?hpThe article also points out that the Vietnamese government is considering legalizing same-sex marriage. If approved by the government, Vietnam would be the first Asian country to recognize same-sex marriage. According to an article from the Associated Press (see link below), only a few years ago homosexuality was considered to be a social evil in Vietnam, so attitudes have been becoming much more positive over the past five years. bigstory.ap.org/article/unlikely-vietnam-considers-same-sex-marriageI know that the world has a long way to go on this issue, but in a number of countries, including the U.S., acceptance of homosexuality and same-sex marriage has been gaining traction at an increasing rate over the last 5-6 years. This is good news indeed.

I wonder how much Spotify, Rhapsody and the like are adding to the labels bottom line? Can they help make up for the lack of CD sales in any significant way?
In a big way! "Spotify said to be No.2 source of revenue for major music labels"! and here is the article: news.yahoo.com/spotify-said-no-2-source-revenue-major-music-220008700.html
However, Billboard offers a different take:
" Spotify may be the second-largest digital account for major labels, but streaming is hardly their second-largest source of revenue. In fact, it's unlikely that any single subscription service provides to labels more revenue than Walmart does in the U.S. alone. "
source: www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/industry/digital-and-mobile/business-matters-is-spotify-labels-2-source-1007443752.story
Digital subscriptions are not quite there yet to overtake the brick-and-mortar sales, but are undoubtedly significant and looking to be the future (at least one of them).

Where can I look up how close is FYE to being platinum? I don't know where to find the data. :-/ According to the Numbers thread, the most recent U.S. sales numbers that we have for FYE are from 8/2/12: FYE: 843, 230 Glam Nation Live: 49,760 atop.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=numbers&action=display&thread=1290I doubt that FYE has made platinum (1 million copies sold) in the last 5 months. However, it is likely that GNL is now gold (DVDs need only 50,000 to hit gold status). Hope this helps.
