Glampoon - can you please explain WHY it is "WTF" for you... the reason I am asking is that I AM confused by the original version to be frank...i.e. - there was NOTHING passionate in Cash's version, not a bit of "desire" expressed in music or singing despite the lyrics talking about it... it sounded like some polka / macarena piece...so, I can't see how Adam's PASSIONATE, almost LUSTY version is "WTF" and the original is "GOOD"...( My apologies to JC's purists here...) Because I grew up hearing it as a fun Country song, then suddenly it's an Egyptian porn soundtrack, what's not WTF about that This

katycake! I totally get what you are saying and was trying to compose something and finding it hard to find the right words. Thinking about it now, not only did Adam do something on AI that had never been done before, I think what he did on stage is something I had not seen in years. As you put it "raw sexuality and SENSUALITY". Sure a lot of popular music is full of sex, but I never thought guys in bagging pants grabbing their crotches and singing crassly about women is particularly sexy. Or men in suits crooning don't do it for me either. I had not witnessed truly sexy, in my book, moves/attitude/appearance by a man since probably the days of Mick Jagger, Led Zepplin, even Aerosmith. I think Adam brought up a lot of repressed memories. I remember watching ROF and thinking "I can't believe you did that". Sure I loved it but I thought that would be the end of him, he showed skin and those pants, for gods' sake. But when my much older conservative female coworker gushed about the performance to my shock, I thought maybe it would be ok.

I watched the 2:16 min video of Adam's journey yesterday (inspired my the talk on the boards) www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlq_qJxCxi4 and I have one question: what did Adam sing on the first day of Hollywood week that garnered the "mixed reviews" from the judges? I'm not sure, but I heard it was What's Up. The one he sang at Upright Cabaret. But I'm not sure. I guess it was never shown... ETA: Oooooh, it was What's Up!!!! Thanks! that was really bugging me.

I've seen Adam's AI performances many times, but I still remember my initial reaction to ROF. It was "Am I watching a subversive element right in the midst of prime-time wholesome family-friendly American TV??" The next thing, I was curious to see if the judges would realize how rebellious that was. They did and they didn't. I think that what made Simon so irritated, and the others a bit confused. Now if you'd ask me what was subversive about it, I wouldn't be able to answer. Maybe partly because he took such a traditional American genre and turned it inside out, stripped it of its "American" features, gave it a completely different flavor, and added such raw sexuality and sensuality to it. And still it was in accordance with the song's lyrics, so it "made sense". I don't know how to explain it, I'm rambling here, sorry .
ETA why are my fonts different than everyone else's? ???
It makes perfect sense! Your font looks just like mine on my screen. Thanks Our fonts look completely different to me - type, size, everything :|

Albiku - I felt like you did when I first heard ROF. I had goosebumps throughout the whole song. I kept thinking it was the most creative take off of a song I had ever heard. I was jumping for joy. I thought Adam had made those changes to the song. I found out later that someone else had come up with the version, and Adam had adapted it to his way of presenting a song. It didn't matter. At the time I thought he was the most creative singer I had ever seen. He had everything: looks, sexiness, voice, emotion, you name it. He had it all and still does.

Because I grew up hearing it as a fun Country song, then suddenly it's an Egyptian porn soundtrack, what's not WTF about that Awhile back there was a bit of discussion on ATOP about the early NY Club Kiddies. I talked a little about my favorite uncle, Fred (RIP), one of the pioneers of the NY club scene. In later life his stage name was Rocco Primavera. This is what I grew up with, so perhaps that explains some of why very little gets a WTF reaction from me.
