Crap, I meant to stay in lurkdom (3:30 is demanding my attention, and for the record he will not respond to 5 o'clock) but Q3 drew me out so now I guess I'll share my reaction to ROF. (Down 3:30, down!) I was dismayed. I wanted him to advance sooooo badly and I knew that performance would not go over well in middle America. Sorry to say most of the burritos in my Taco Bell are not as progressive and liberal as I am. So, I voted my tortilla off that night, muttering to myself the whole time, "Adam, you shouldn't have done that. You should have been more conservative! You should have played the game!" Thank God he made it through. Gave me hope that maybe there are more liberal burritos out there than I suspected. But wasn't it a close call? Isn't that the time during the results show it was down to him and the blonde girl (can't recall her name)? In hindsight, I'm glad he stuck to his guns and did it his way. Obviously, he's better at plotting his path than I am.

I agree. Well Randy was a bit negative about the nail polish. But he actually commented favorably about Adam as a vocalist. He was only like "huh that's a bit unusual" which isn't far from the truth really. Seemed like a pretty random thing to comment on though lulz

I too am going down the rabbit hole of Season 8 (the second time in as many days :D) and remember waiting in anticipation on the actual night of his performance. I was, of course, expecting something good - boy! and we got mind-bending gloriousness! And yes, it definitely was a strech especially for people so used to the original, thus the wtf!
Adam definitely took a risk (just as he said he was doing all along) and I think of all his Idol covers, ROF and Mad World will endure.
Now for Simon's reaction - IMO - he is a seriously repressed guy and just could not handle the sexual voltage of ROF. To be charitable, he might also have been worried that Adam had knocked himself out of the competition. What do you think?

It's been fun reading everyone's reactions to ROF. I know that Adam was criticized for not giving Dilana credit for the arrangement, but on the segment where he works with Randy, he clearly states he was not doing Cash's version, but found "another version" on the web. So, he never tried to claim the idea as his own. However, watching Dilana's version and Adam's back to back, Adam took te IDEA from Dilana, but then ramped it up to a whole new level of awesomeness.
Adam has a way of sculpting the arc of a song so it has a beginning, middle and ending. It "goes somewhere." It is like the plot of a good story with introduction, build, climax, and resolution. It is one reason his interpretations are so satisfying and make you feel. ROF is a wonderful example of that talent.
Adam's vocals were nothing short of breathtaking. The riffs and harmonies were difficult and performed perfectly. He had complete control of the tone and colors in his voice.
When people say they were confused, perhaps they mean they were surprised? The interpretation was unexpected and original? The harmonies were not like anything many had heard in American pop music? They didn't know how to react? Laugh? Drool? Pick their jaw up off the ground? I think maybe they were stunned by what they saw and heard.
Me? I was thrilled! Incredibly impressed. Transported. I didn't think, "What the hell is this arrangement doing on conservative, family-oriented, tame American Idol?" That never occurred to me. I thought, "What the hell is this guy doing on a TV talent show?! He should be performing center stage on Broadway!" Followed by, "What's the point of another nine weeks of this show? Adam is clearly the BEST by far." Obviously I was naive about how TV "talent" shows work, and the fact that they are strangely manipulated popularity contests like I abhored when I was in junior high school. When I say that Adam broke Idol for me, I mean that he not only spoiled me for all the lesser talents the show has featured, but also spoiled the mirage that the show was about finding the best incredible singers and performers.

No, he wasn't in the bottom 3 that night but left on the couch until the last second with Alexis Grace (finally remembered her name) to see who went to bottom 3. Scared me to death.

What a relief he wasn't voted off. I don't think he was in the bottom three.
