Madonna is controversial just for the sake of it and I have no doubt that the 80 people arrested weren't arrested for merely being pro-gay rights. I had to stop reading the thread to answer this. There have been many, many, many arrests in Russia of people whose only crime had been being pro-gay or gay themselves and "flaunting it" according to their gay propaganda law ( an example). There have been many reports about it (on USAtoday: "Three dozen LGBT rights campaigners gathered Friday near the State Duma in Moscow to protest the law, while militant Orthodox activists started assaulting and pelting them with eggs. Police intervened, but mostly detained the LGBT campaigners"). There have been videos and reports of gays being beaten up while they were at peaceful gay protests ( this article is priceless). The political and social climate for the LGBT community over there is really bad. So I don't really know why those 80 people were arrested at Madonna's concert because I didn't read anything about it, but I think it's clear that it could very well be that they were just being pro-gay. IMHO, you can't say you have "no doubts", with all that's been happening over there. No offense! And hey, the Russian government also knew who they were allowing to perform over there when they got Madonna, didn't they?

I have visited St. Petersburg twice. Loved it for it's cultural splendor both times. It is truly a city of contrasts. Beautiful, breathtaking architecture is mixed with soviet era cement and rusty re-bar high rises. the Hermitage is a wonder of the world. Still the people on the street seemed stuck in Soviet era, especially the babushkas, who probably experienced the repression first hand. On a practical note, the city receives a great influx of dollars from tourism, so I doubt there will be any "incidents." OTT white Nights is one of my favorite dance movies.
Still I will be glad when Adam is reunited with Sauli in Helsinki, a beautiful city in it's own right, made more beautiful by a plethora of welcoming Finnberts and Glamberts and Sauliberts from all over!

www.youtube.com/watch?v=gj1PvScs4ZA.. One of the most beautiful sights in Saint Petersburg... Adam will probably go shopping for clothes..LOL I so hope that the people of ST. Petersburg go to Adam's show in mass... Hope that courage , desire for equality and freedom overcome fear and prejudice.
Melliemom thank you for this video of the beautiful sights of SP. Stunningly beautiful pieces of art and architecture! I love getting to see different cultures' history through their art. ETA: F*uck the politics!
You mean going shopping and to night clubs/bars is not enough for you to experience local culture and its history? Seriously, St. Petersburg is amazingly beautiful! Not only the palaces, but the city itself. Hope they have a chance to look around, although I understand that by now it is all a blur for them...

I will do that when Adam is safely in Finland...Being political is easy when you're home sitting at your computer. What Adam is courageously doing is going into the mouth of the dragon.. I'm not going to help stir up any controversy at this point. Just my opinion for what it's worth.IMHO Milonov is looking for scapegoats and looking to further his ambitions.. He can interpret OOL in any way that will help his cause. I also don't want to make it hard for concert goers who may be afraid of being at Adam's gig. From what I have read there were about 80 arrests of people at Madonna's concert.I will work like a dog for justice after Adam leaves.. The Russian government allowed Adam to book this concert in St. Petersburg, Russia, knowing full well that he is gay...where is this idea coming from that he's in danger somehow? As for OOL it's clearly about the LGBT community. "They say we'll rot in hell" is almost a direct quote from every bible beater/anti-gay person on the planet. I do think he'll sing the song though and I don't believe he'll have any issues doing so. Madonna is controversial just for the sake of it and I have no doubt that the 80 people arrested weren't arrested for merely being pro-gay rights. I want yet comment this: " The Russian government allowed Adam to book this concert in St. Petersburg, Russia.......". Russia doesn't necessarily function that way. We Finns know very well that the local authorities don't always care what The Russian government says. And nobody cares..... :-S. I'm not saying that he is in danger, but it is unnecessary to provoke them.
