Adam Lambert heads in new direction for next album
4.1.13 by Q3
In a recent interview with The Sun, Adam talked about his desire to spend time in Nashville and Austin to learn more, spurring rumors that the next album will be country. While these latest comments have caused headlines that he plans to “go country” on his next album, that seems to be reading a little too much into his quotes. But now we know that it was true!?!?!
Fans got there first cue that things had changed when Adam was not in New York for Fashion Week this year. There were a few reports that Adam was spotted in a Old Navy store purchasing plaid shirts but no one gave those reports much credence.
Well, over the weekend I learned that Adam discovered his new direction. Sources tell me that Adam called Doug Morris, Chairman and CEO of Sony Music Entertainment, and asked to be transferred from RCA to RCA Nashville. Adam explained that he had already been influenced by country, brought about by long hours listening to music from Garth Brooks, Alison Krauss, Lady Antebellum and Rascal Flatts, and his new love, Wanda Jackson. And he wanted to explore this new direction further. Plus, he convinced Morris that he could bring American Country Music to Asia.
Adam is already planning on spend a few months in Nashville. “We’re already making plans for me to do some writing there so that’s definitely going to happen,” he said. “I’m going to take Sauli and everything.”
It may seem like this musical direction came out of the blue but actually we just did not know what was going on behind the scenes. It appears that Adam has been quietly planning this change in direction for years. He started to learn how to play guitar in 2009 after learning a few chords from his American Idol roommate Kris Allen. In 2010 he filled his playlist with country tracks and started to deconstruct the complex musical forms. He also started to study the fashion, makeuo and wigs used by the major Nashville stars and was surprised to find them very similar to West LA fashion. (I understand that he passed on a few tips to Rupaul but I cannot verify that.)
The inspiration for this new direction really began when Adam played the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee in 2010. Perhaps it was the spirits of the formerly Grand Ole Opry but that is just a guess. Adam really fought this direction and forced himself to stay with his pop-rock music for his second album, Trespassing. But the allure of country music is just too strong and it appear that Adam has given in.
So here is what we know…well at least what “informed sources” tell me. (Trust me, these are good sources with access to Adam.)
• Adam’s third album will include 12 tracks + plus 6 bonus tracks. see the track list below
• All the songs are written or co-written by Adam. (Adam discovered he can write a country track in about 30 minutes!) One track is a collaboration with Dolly Parton.
• Demos are in the works but the tracks for the album are already selected. (The A&R folks at RCA Nashville actually said, don’t bring us any extra tracks ‘cause one country track is about the same as the next.
• There is one duet on the album – with k d lang!!
• Glamberts can sigh with relief because Taylor Swift is not involved with this album. But the list of country collaborators includes almost everyone else in Nashville: Blake Shelton, Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Dixie Chicks, Tim McGraw, Marina McBride, along with a star-studded list of producers: Paul Worley, Dann Huff,. Frank Rogers, Jack White, Bone Burnett and Owen Bradley and too many more to list.

A new look!
Forget about the eyeliner and glitter – they will be gone for this era. Instead expect a lot of raw plaid, leather and amazing hair. And the most assume boots Adam has ever worn. I have confirmed that he was spotted boot shopping in Austin, TX last week. (I am not sure how he got there, what he was doing there or how he got in and out of Austin without the always alert Adam ninja’s spotting him!) Plus, I am told to expect to see HATS!! and v-neck white t-shirts.
There will be sparkle – rhinestones. Adam has already hooked up with Fashion designer Manuel Cuevas Jr. You may know him from the suit he designed for Jeff Tweedy’s, lead singer of Wilco, 2008 appearance on Saturday Night Live – an amazing white suit covered in embroidered roses. Cuevas is the grandson of Manuel Cuevas who worked for Nudie Cohn (he also was his son-in-law) and is famous as the creator of the roses and skeletons insignia of the Grateful Dead and supplied the suits for the Beatles during their Sgt. Pepper phase. Rumor is that Cuevas has been asked to create an updated version of the $10,000 gold lamé suit Nudie Cohn created for Elvis Presley, which the King wore on the cover of his 1959 album “50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can’t Be Wrong”.
Now for musical direction
Word is that Adam is trying to create an homage to country/punk artist Hank Williams III and is hoping to recreate the impact of “Straight to Hell” the first ever country music release to merit both a parental advisory sticker on the package and a clean version of the album for more conservative retail outlets like Wal-Mart.
But the real shift will be in the instrumentation. I am told fans can expect a very classic country mix with electric guitars, electric bass, steel guitar, fiddles, claw-hammer banjos , drums, harmonica, mandolin, and accordion.
So what do you think?
Is country music ready for Adam Lambert? And can Adam bring American Country Music to China?
