Life Ball
A big event with a serious background

Celebrating the joy of life and the diversity of cultures, Life Ball unites the Viennese ball tradition with opulence, extravagance, glamour, provocation, fancy performances, committed speeches as well as emotional moments.

Life Ball guests have always been encourage to wear fancy, unusual outfits as the creativity of the costumes is part of the concept and contributes to the unique flair of the event. The annual Life Ball Style Bible is an inspiration for ball guests to feature their own Life Ball aqudate look according to the motto.

The Life Ball can be divided into two major events:

— Magenta Carpet, opening and Fashion Show on the Red Ribbon Catwalk at the City Hall Square

— the actual Ball as well as the Party inside the City Hall

Each year, the opening ceremony attracts more thousands of visitors as well as 500 national and international media representatives to Vienna´s City Hall Square, where everybody can experience the big show on the Red Ribbon stage live and for free.

Following the 2-hour-opening show on City Hall Square, the jamboree starts inside the city hall for 3,780 holders of Life Ball tickets. Many halls and yards of this historical building open up for guests, indulging them with an iridescent show comprising live concerts of national and international stars, exciting performances and culinary surprises until 5 o’clock in the morning.

Life Ball 2013 is dedicated to “1001 Nights”

“Saving lives with imagination” is the link between Life Ball 2013 and its entertaining yet sensual source of inspiration: “1001 Nights”.

Everyone knows her, courageous Scheherezade, bravely fighting for her life during 1001 nights. Her adventurous and fairy-tale like stories attract the king’s curiosity night after night, and her inexhaustible fantasy eventually saves her life. Opulently designed, guests of Life Ball 2013 on 25 May 2013 will be immersed into a world of poetry and fairy tales, mythical creatures and djinns, desirous poems and wise allegories – using fantasy to help people infected with HIV or suffering from AIDS.

Using an old Arabic saying, Life Ball 2013 follows the motto: “It takes the night to see the stars”– for a future without HIV and AIDS. This vision, which can become true, was the common tenor at the World AIDS Conference 2012 in Washington D.C., where representatives of different international AIDS aid organizations agreed: “Together we can end AIDS”.


The Life Ball Opening 2013
ENTRÉE & MAGENTA CARPET

Access to the Ball Area is possible through the Kronen Zeitung portal opposite the Burgtheater, which will look like an oriental royal palace and therefore will get guests in the right mood for the Life Ball 2013 and its motto 1001 Nights.

The 100 members of the Life Ball family, who will drive up to the Ball area directly in the Life Ball tram of the Wiener Linien, will open the Magenta Carpet, showing off their flamboyant costumes and stylings, before national and international star guests will arrive. Employees of the Austrian Airlines will greet them with charm and Austrian hospitality and will take them over the Magenta Carpet to their seats.

At 8.15 p.m., the ORF live broadcast from the Vienna City Hall Square will start. In “Life Ball – Der Auftakt“ (Life Ball – the prelude), Arabella Kiesbauer will welcome famous guests and will talk to them in the VIP lounge “Skyliner“. In between, Mirjam Weichselbraun and Alfons Haider will report about the colorful events on the “Magenta Carpet“.

The arrival of the Life Ball MINI 2013 designed by Roberto Cavalli is the highlight of the entry – Roberto Cavalli will drive the MINI Pacemen he has designed over the Carpet.

“When hatred turns into love“ – these 5 words describe the framework story of 1001 Nights. A compilation of instructive tales and at the same time stage for a centuries-old relationship story: The story of King Schahriyar, who developed bloodlust and lust for revenge when he found out that his wife had been unfaithful. So he marries another woman every night, just to have her killed the following morning. Only Scheherazade brings an end to his cruelty: Because of her fantasy, which provides her with exciting stories every night that make the king so eager to hear the next part of that he spares her. And because of her honesty and love, which makes the king feel love again and in the end makes him overcome his prejudices.

You will hear the traditional Life Ball fanfare before the 200 debutants – this year in the role of princely subjects – will enter to the “Marsch Pompös“ from the “Aladdin Suite“ by Carl Nielsen. The casting of the 200 debutants was supervised once again by Prof. Dkfm. Thomas Schäfer-Elmayer and Dominik Truschner.

Austrian designer Thomas Kirchgrabner is responsible for this year’s debutants’ look. The debutants all appear in an oriental style, wearing harem pants and turbans decorated with 14.400 of sparkling Swarovski elements. The robes for the opening have been produced by 40 people around Life Ball Angel Gabi Sulzgruber-Schartl. The textile print of the 2,200 cutting pieces has been done by Fahnen-Gärtner.

A vocal background to the “Marsch Pompös“ will be provided by the Turkish OperaTwins Sinem Balik and Didem Balik, who will give their voice to the motto of the Life Ball 2013, “It takes the night to see the stars”. When “Scheherazade“ by Rimsky-Korsakov is playing, King Schahriyar and Scheherazade, played by exceptional dancer Desmond Richardson famous violinist Lidia Baich, will meet on stage for the very first time.

The stage, which is 50m wide and has an area of 700m2. is crowned by a 25m high dome which weighs about 24 tons. During the two-week build-up phase on the City Hall Square, the on-location building of the dome will take one week alone, before it will be lifted up on stage by the use of two cranes, each of which weighing 100 tons.

The presentation will be done by Ruth Brauer-Kvam and Cornelius Obonya, who will see themselves confronted with a huge opposite on stage. This year’s Life Ball will make use of a new technology, which has never been used before in Austria, in order to let an overdimensional djinn appear. In the person of Paulus Manker, it will depict the destructive counterpart to the joie de vivre of the Life Ball – it only sees the sad sides of fate and no hope.

Melanie Griffith will give an introduction to the theme 1001 Nights before the Mayor of the City of Vienna, Dr. Michael Häupl, will welcome everybody. The live broadcast on ORF1 will be commented by the Ö3 presenters Sandra König and Peter L. Eppinger.

“Love Wins Over Glamour” – Life Ball Song 2013

During the Life Ball song 2013, interpreter Adam Lambert as Ali Baba will come under the spell of the treasure of the 40 thieves, who will accompany his performance by their dancing. The US singer, whose career started off at “American Idol“, is famous for his extraordinary voice, with covers several octaves, as well as his flamboyant-theatrical performances. He was the first openly homosexual pop artist who signed a contract with a major music label in the US.

At the end of the song, the famous words “Open, sesame!” show their meaning at the Life Ball, as they fully open the stage for the first time. About 270 protagonists – harem girls, belly dancers, musicians of a Turkish orchestra as well as the debutants – begin to move together according to the motto “Alles Leben” (“All live”) and accompanied by the 1001 Nights Waltz by Johann Strauss Jun.

On May 30th and 31st, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the City of Los Angeles and Christopher Street West/ LA Pride will honor Adam Lambert with the HOPE OF LOS ANGELES Award.

When Adam Lambert appeared on the eighth season of American Idol, people couldn’t stop talking about the shape-shifting, 6’1” singer with the glam-rock sartorial flair, razor-sharp sense of humor, and jaw-dropping, powerhouse voice.

In 2009, Lambert released his debut album, the Platinum-certified For Your Entertainment, which scored the smash single “Whataya Want From Me,” and set out on his 2010 Glam Nation World Tour, taking his electrifying show to thousands of fans across the globe.

Whether it’s about asserting himself as an outsider in society on ‘Trespassing,’ or the seductive power of non-verbal communication on ‘Broken English’ or taking on the discrimination of the LGBT community on ‘Outlaws of Love’, each song lifts the veil off Lambert’s personality a little bit more. There are songs about the intoxicating hunt for connection and the thrilling freedom of marching to one’s own beat.

The Indiana-born, California-bred Lambert was a seasoned theatrical performer before competing on American Idol, where his stunning performances are still widely regarded as some of the most riveting moments in Idol history. When the show ended, he toured the U.S. with the other Top 10 finalists while working on For Your Entertainment, which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and earned Lambert a Grammy Award nomination for “Best Male Pop Vocal Performance,” in addition to scores of international awards and honors.
