While I agree that Adam is knowledgable about what's new and cutting edge in the music biz, I see people giving him kudos for his choices to work with Pharell and Nile, but I don't think either of those collabs were his idea. Didn't he say his label suggested Pharell in many interviews? I remember him saying he wasn't sure if he was "cool enough" but it worked out really well. Seems someone at his label had some insight, right? Also, I recall that contacting Nile was Sam Sparro's idea, maybe I'm remembering this wrong, anyone else remember? Even if these weren't his ideas, I think both connections have been very good for Adam in many ways. Maybe I just want to believe that someone at his label believes in him, as much as I do, as we fans do. Regarding Pharell and Nile; Adam told RCA A&R that he wanted to make a Funk album and the duty of the A&R is to facilitate that for Adam that's why RCA A&R that works with Adam connected him to Pharell and Nile, coz these two are famous for their funk sounds. So the idea was/is still coming from Adam.

Q3 said: I do not have any hope that RCA will "get" Adam's fans. Looking at the crowd at the Del Mar concert, there is no unifying principle that fits within the marketing world of corporate entertainment.
> Demographically, the only thing I could see is that it was skewed white/anglo, but otherwise looked like America because it was in America. PeEven the M&G line was less homogenous than I imagined. Las Vegas 2010 and Sayreville 2010 and Idol Memphis 2009 were the same. (I did not tally stats at any other concerts.)
> Genre? In talking to people at concerts for 3 years, and based on the fans I encounter, there is no common genre except not too many Country, Christian and Hip Hop/Rap fans. But I think that is because of other factors.
> There is a attitudinal commonality -- and it is global. It also explains the lack of Country, Christian and Hip Hop/Rap fans.
You cannot easily market to a attitudinal group. Radio is organized around demos and genres/formats. TV is organized to reach demographic groups. The web is essential to an artist like Adam. The web is self-organized and user filtered.
I honestly think RCA understands that they have to market Adam online -- and they tried to do this with BTIKM. But a drab, boring, standard pop song like BTIKM is not going to be a viral hit. It is really hard to get anything to go viral and close to impossible to plan it. ------
I agree with you, Q3 that RCA has a marketing problem. My niece and a girlfriend went to the Universal concert last month. They are both marketing majors and her friend is taking an advanced marketing class this summer. It was niece's fifth Adam concert and friend's first. While waiting for the show to start, they called me. My niece commented, "Well, it's a usual Adam crowd -- totallly diverse and undefinable." Her friend then said, "I've never been to a concert like this, with a guy with a rainbow mohawk on my left and a grandma in an ECV on my right. And everything inbetween. How the heck do you market to a fanbase like that? There is no easy way "in" to a diverse population like this because finding out what they have in common besides Adam -- how do you do that? Maybe total promo saturation of the market to reach them?" She said she was going to ask her prof. The prof told her it was a really provocative dilemma for marketers and she is now working on that topic as her research paper for that class.

Linda Ladden 4evrmomof4 12m Hump Day With Adam Lambert: Living Proud - Adam Puzzle and WITWISAL riddle - thebacklot.com logo.to/16r5rYU via @thebacklot It’s no secret we love Adam Lambert and the energy and joy he brings to the otherwise sterile, manufactured world of modern pop music. But he’s such a worldwide whirling dervish that it’s sometimes difficult to keep track of where and when he touches down. Hence our weekly feature Hump Day With Adam Lambert, which will hopefully keep us up-to-date with his appearances, performances, and interviews. And on those weeks when Adam’s talents lie dormant, we bring you classic pics and performances. . . . . . . . .

Ok - I'll admit that I *totally* want to see this gal's research paper when she's done. I'm really intellectually curious on how this issue could be approached on an academic level. In all seriousness, would she be willing to post it - with any professor comments - when she's done?

[grins] And here's my own personal $0.02 on A3, since I haven't commented on it yet: I flove 80's music. And I would love either *an* 80's cover or an 80's homage-type song / set of songs. But not a whole album worth. [stretches] HOWEVER, I would laugh and totally happily get behind a kinda joke/concept-y EP of 80's stuff if it was in addition to an LP of original material. It would be my guilty pleasure and I would undoubtedly play those songs to death, bopping my head and grooving the entire time. I would *****so****** love it. Madly. Passionately. Totally. But not at the expense of a more modern album. If I could get BOTH, I'd be cool. But would need both. #girlcandream!

In all seriousness, would she be willing to post it - with any professor comments - when she's done? As would I. As far back as Orange County fair I also noticed something that I thought was out of the ordinary. Not a marketing major but I could see the diversity, but something else was happening. Young People, those even under 20 would come up to me to start a conversation about Adam. (my black and yellow seemed to be the giveaway) They wanted history, what I thought about his music, where they could see him more and on and on. In my experience this happens very infrequently and lord help that what I think is cool they would also like. In fact I think this has only happened to me at Adam concerts and Burning Man. Most delightful thing I saw at Del Mar was a Grandmother with her teen something Granddaughter, both equally excited about seeing Adam!!
