Casting Freddie Mercury: Who should play the Queen frontman?

With Sacha Baron Cohen having dropped out of his long-standing attachment to the Freddie Mercury biopic, reportedly over creative differences with Mercury's Queen bandmates, the search is on for a replacement.
Johnny Depp has been named as the frontrunner by bookies, but he's just one of several names that are now in the mix, so we've narrowed down our top six choices for the role of Mercury.

Adam Lambert
Despite performing with Brian May and Roger Deacon, at 63 years old we don't see Free's Paul Rodgers as a serious contender, but having "replaced" the late Freddie for the 'Queen + Adam Lambert' live shows, the American Idol runner-up must be considered. A star on both sides of the Atlantic, May has repeatedly called him an "amazing artist" and "a very nice guy".
There are obvious issues like Adam is not a seasoned dramatic actor and this is a difficult part to play, and the producers are unlikely to take a risk with this expensive film on an unknown quantity -- so this is not happening but fun to speculate about it.
The odd part is that Adam does not sing like Freddie. Would he really want to be a karaoke actor? The nice thing about QAL is that it is Adam on stage, not a fake Freddie.
Adam does QUEEN's music justice in a way few others can but his style is very different. It is particularly noticeable on the classic rock songs -- like WWRY.
But on the dramatic rock songs, I think can do Freddie's version.

And I can certainly see and here Adam doing this version --

JMHO Idol would take about as much time and would be better for his overall career at this point. Biopics like this have a very short life and often are disappointing. Whoever plays the part of Freddie is in for a lot of criticism from Freddie fans and movie critics.
Personally, I would rather see Adam cast as Elvis in the new Elvis movie. He looks more like Elvis, can certainly sing the music, he could get the mid-South accent down pretty easily.
ETA: But mostly I want him to get Idol.
