I think Anderson Cooper summed up my thoughts on Miley very nicely last night on the Ridiculist ac360.blogs.cnn.com/category/the-ridiculist/MTV, AMAs should just slap 18+ warnings on these shows so parents can be warned, and then Miley & Adam could just defend their performances based on their merits, not their effects on children. Spot on!

My issue isn't with sexuality of the performance, nor how much clothing was being worn. No, my problem was that it was simply a hot mess. Had the performance had any sort of self awareness, irony, or subversive delivery I would have applauded it. However, the whole thing was just a couple of desperate posers trying in vain to look edgy and sexual. It reeked of a gasping plea, seeming to say "See! See! I'm not a kid anymore! Aren't we just so very cool and sexy?" As for anyone throwing a fit about a sexualize performance on MTv? What realty are they from where MTV has ever been conservative and "child friendly?" Which ever it is, they'd better hurry back to the Stargate, because the chevrons are locking. Exactly Plus I love any Stargate reference!

Miley had on more covering than Gaga did - Gaga had on two shells and a g-string. Miley had on a flesh colored two piece bathing suit. Why does Gaga get away with her stuff but the hammer falls on Miley. Madonna did some pretty shocking things many years ago and for that matter, Pink did some raunchy stuff onstage as well - Rhianna as well. When you look at Miley's act again, as Adam said, it is pretty funny - and no different than what goes on in dance clubs every night and on television every day. I think it was mostly feigned indignation and something for the media to run with the next day. It wasn't just her outfit. Grinding backwards into Thicke, using the foam finger sexually in her crotch and mouth was unfortunate. Even her good friend Kelly Osbourne told her to put her tongue back in her mouth, on Fashion Police.

It's not about "the children." By now, most people HAVE to get what MTV is all about (and no way were my young kids watching that show). I was disturbed as a female. Of course, I kind of find the song offensive to begin with.
What is most sad, though, is the utter cluelessness of Miley. She is in such a "fame bubble," alternate reality that she obviously had no idea that her performance would come off as so embarrassing and desperate.

Something Else! @somethngelse 5mSomething Else!: ‘It’s a tricky challenge’: #AdamLambert on bringing his own personality to #Queen appearances dlvr.it/3sdtRxConcerts, Pop Music, Rock Music — August 27, 2013 at 11:24 am ‘It’s a tricky challenge’: Adam Lambert on bringing his own personality to Queen appearances by Something Else!
(Sorry I can't get the video to post. Click the article.)
For Adam Lambert, appearing with Queen — a band established well before he was born — requires a balancing act between honoring their legend and continuing to reach out to the American Idol finalist’s own fan base. “It’s a tricky challenge, because when I was offered to do these concerts with Queen, I was intimidated and honored at the same time,” Lambert says in this CNTN clip. “How do I approach it in a way that’s respectful to the Queen fans, that’s respectful to the band, but also that has my own self respect — and respect for my fans?” Lambert has made a series of appearances with Queen since 2009, beginning when Roger Taylor and Brian May guested on the Idol finale. He then filled in for the late Freddie Mercury at the MTV Europe VMAs in 2011, in a quartet of July 2012 performances in Ukraine, Russia and Poland and then at London’s Hammersmith Apollo.
“It was a nice balancing act of saying: ‘OK, let’s do it in the vein, or in the spirit of, Freddie,” Lambert says. “What was his intention behind this? What was he trying to provoke out of the audience? And, keeping that in mind, doing it my way, as well. It was a tricky thing, but I had Brian and Roger on stage with me, guiding me through it. If I had been on my own, it probably would have been a little scarier.” May, Lambert and Taylor will make their stateside debut in September, appearing as Queen at the iHeart Radio festival to held at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand.

Utterly agree. I face my own hypocrisy in watching the performance upon hearing about it. Scandalicious performances just work so well as a formula. It did look like a lot of fun. Like some others here I'm a big fan of artistic freedom, playful sexual expression, and titillating performances. The problem is that it is completely unoriginal. The art of the overt sex performance is age old, replayed a trillion times. Should pop bring us something new? Something other than porn prep for teens? (NOTE - following said with pinch of irony) Thankful it portrayed equal rights for self pleasuring and both sides having fun. Hopefully they will start teaching quality equal-rights-respecting sexual technique next so our teens will get something of lasting worth beyond have fun, be eye candy, and turn men on. If Miley had wrapped the finger in a condom I could add kudo points. VMA - equal rights soft porn with quality sexual pleasuring hip hop moves - moving society forward to a better place. Great opening for parent-child conversations about the value of a girl, quality of attention, goals of media and media advertisers, how advertisers and the big bucks involved are a huge force that lure and urge artists into to vapid sex puppet land (I mean, at least be a smart sex puppet), and who we want our children to look up to. The conversation that parents often don't have with their children. PS. This is not about "puritanical good girl code." I hate that box. This is about the ease with which girls fall into the sexy-toy/candy-for-men box and think that is success. Without a wise family member, role model, or advisor, they often can't seem to crawl back out of it to see their other valuable assets. They often stop building their highly valuable assets because they get such massive attention for being a mindless sexy minx. A beautiful voice lasts for life. Talent lasts for life. Using one's lolita nubility in a blatant, shockifying way is an incredible means to fast money but the nubile stage lasts 10 years max and shock effect works for a far shorter period. Have fun with it but focus on TALENT. The attention for one's sexuality is so strong that one can easily put one's talent and true strengths development on the back burner. When the nubile lolita years are over for our sex puppet what is this girls worth? Oh, whoops butterfingers, she thinks she is worthless and she's not making an eighth of the money. The ultimate societal trap for the pretty minx. Society pays top price to see your sex displayed. So.... not dumb in the slightest. Just smart to stick with strengths and talents and use sexual titilation as a fabulous flirty garnish rather than the main meal IMHO. Less can be a lot more. Steps off soap box... OK, one more thing... Adam is a member of a community that has had to hide their sexuality and that has had their sexuality systematically hidden and banned. It is a true artistic statement for him to express his sexuality openly because that alone is still boundary breaking. Miley is a member of a community that has had their sexuality regularly used and exploited, to the detriment of all other qualities including intelligence. One form of art for an entertainer like Miley could involve taking back their sexuality (owning it) and using it to make smart and interesting statements, to hold a mirror up to society. There was just no art in her performance, slapping the big booty did come close however ; )

Didn't he admit that what he did at the AMA's was not what was rehearsed? Apparently what Miley and Thicke did was rehearsed. So MTV and a whole lot of other "adults" knew what was coming and I'm sure knew the row that would ensue. Personally, wasn't my cuppa for a whole lot of reasons, but I also didn't watch the show - I have a pretty good idea of what shows like this will be. :-) Thinking parents would have tvoed it to make sure their kids could watch - But, I also think that our (speaking very generally here) American Puritan streak is in full view - self-righteous hissy fit time. We love to roll around in scandal and whispering campaigns (supermarket tabloids, TMZ anyone?) - and Adam is correct - if you want to get talked about, do something outrageous (Gaga anyone?). Personally, I find Mr. Thicke, the writers of his "song" and the justification of that message and presentation to be more offensive. And, Adam, as much as I support him, has done some things that I found tasteless/tacky. Such is the world of entertainment/art.
