After the the iHeart concert, I whined about reviews using the stock phrase "He's no Freddie Mercury . . " followed by something like "he did a good job." It's such a back-handed compliment--to me. This particular author acknowledged Freddie's great reputation without taking anything away from Adam. Much better writing in my opinion. The other way seems a bit lazy and predictable. It is impossible to think or talk about Queen without Freddie looming large in the background. For many, Freddie WAS the face, voice and spirit of Queen. Add to that he got sick when he was arguably at his prime creatively and in terms of performance, and you have an icon and legacy that takes on mythic proportions. No one in the media or in the rock world would EVER dare to say that anyone singing with Queen was equal to Freddie, much less even hint at the possibility that in some ways, he was better. In the comparative safety of an Adam forum I will risk saying that in terms of vocal technique, control and range, Adam exceeds Freddie. (And yes, you don't have to tell me that Freddie was not a trained singer while Adam has a dozen years of lessons at least.) In conventional terms of classic beauty, Adam is better looking than Freddie. Even on this forum, there will be argument about these statements because, for many, Freddie is incomparable. You just don't go there! So, I figure that the "he's no Freddie Mercury" but "he is damned good" is the closest authors can get to enthusiastic praise of Adam as long as Freddie's ghost is still very much in the theater. I take the "he's no Freddie Mercury" as no one can replace Freddie, which is very true and Adam will be the first to say it and he doesn't want to replace Freddie. He was there to pay homage to Freddie's and the band legend. Adam is his own entity. Brian keep on saying, if Freddie's still alive, he would love Adam. They both good singers and great performers. And though Brian & Roger love Adam to bit, I'm pretty sure whenever they're on stage as Queen they will always miss Freddie (and John). That's why Brian always dedicated that Love of My Live to Freddie.

I've mostly been lurking today.
In RL, I've been trying to get signed in to healthcare.gov.
What a mess!
Hours of filling out the application only to have them say they can't verify my ID.
Finally, they said they'd accept a copy of my driver's license.
Then, my computer froze. I couldn't even turn it off properly. I had to take out the battery.
Got it restarted.
Now, the site won't let me back on.
Thought I'd come see what you guys are up to before I give in to the urge start screaming obscenities.

OT, but Annie Lennox tweeted a strong statement today, inspired, I'm guessing, at least in part by Miley Cyrus's recent performances. She makes many good points: Annie Lennox @annielennox 2h I have to say that I'm disturbed and dismayed by the recent spate of overtly sexualised performances and videos.... fb.me/Ltrjg0GD Here's her entire post on Facebook: "I have to say that I'm disturbed and dismayed by the recent spate of overtly sexualised performances and videos. You know the ones I'm talking about. It seems obvious that certain record companies are peddling highly styled pornography with musical accompaniment. As if the tidal wave of sexualised imagery wasn't already bombarding impressionable young girls enough..I believe in freedom of speech and expression, but the market forces don't give a toss about the notion of boundaries. As long as there's booty to make money out of, it will be bought and sold. It's depressing to see how these performers are so eager to push this new level of low.Their assumption seems to be that misogyny- utilised and displayed through oneself is totally fine, as long as you are the one creating it. As if it's all justified by how many millions of dollars and U tube hits you get from behaving like pimp and prostitute at the same time. It's a glorified and monetized form of self harm." She is a wise woman. (Of course, I'm a long-time fan of hers, so I might be a bit biased. ) Well said, Annie. But could the same thing have been said about Madonna? She was shockingly sexual and probably started the trend. Maybe? ETA: I'm late to the party and see Madonna has been brought up by others.

I know people will say if you have it why not flaunt it.. but she has as beautiful body as Rihanna, and she chooses not to expose it. aaaanndddd... I will add here.. it also about the voice. . IMO Katy's voice's better than Rihanna.

So, I figure that the "he's no Freddie Mercury" but "he is damned good" is the closest authors can get to enthusiastic praise of Adam as long as Freddie's ghost is still very much in the theater.I agree with you Cassie. And..."Freddie's ghost" I feel to some...will ALWAYS be "very much in the theater". It is what it is. I'm just glad that the powers that be connected Queen with Adam and those of us who already knew the greatness of Queen's music and new generations of fans that are just now hearing their songs...have the privilege to hear and feel Adam and Queen bring to life again such powerful music! Freddie -- for me, and I think many Queen fans, it really was not just because he was a great vocalist. He remains the on of the most powerful, electric, and entertaining performers I have ever seen, an amazing composer and lyricist, musician and vocalist. Plus, he is really unrecognized as a producer -- for example on STL, he used vocal layering techniques to turn his voice, Brian and Roger into a 100 person choir. Adam is only other vocalist who I have heard with Queen who really brings this music back to life. And it is about something more than just being an accomplished vocalist with power and range [which of course he is] -- it is also about the chemistry with Brian and Roger. Example: George Michael is an accomplished vocal with power and range back in the 90's -- but his voice, spirit, energy, something, did not bring the music alive -- at least not for me. I first fell for Adam because of how he sung "Mama". One word, in an odd quirk of fate, from a Queen song. Perhaps it was just plain fate.

So true. Maybe she hasn't noticed Gaga's or Rhianna's performances or videos. Or maybe Miley's was the straw that broke the camel's back for her. Wonder if she remembers early Madonna. As for those who love Freddie or any past performer, IMO, the legend always looms larger than life. I think it is a good thing that Adam is being compared favorably with this legendary performer. At least the legitimate reviewers aren't saying that Adam sucked. heh. Honestly I don't think Freddie Mercury was a good singer I don't like his voice so when they say "he is no Freddie Mercury" I see it as a compliment. I have no idea what you on basing this assessment on. I was lucky enough to see Queen live in the 70's. I recommend you check out any Freddie performance from the 70's -- there are some old fan videos that were shot on 16mm. By 1981 he was having severe vocal issues -- and most of the "famous" videos are from after 1980. Freddie from 1981: And, no people are not exaggerating when they say he was great. Plus he wrote a song or two!
