Just to finish off from yesterday since I couldn't get online again til now!
Quote: 'Idol is not really about talent'.
Talon, we just will have to agree to disagree. I was not even watching the show, lol. But idol never said they can make a star out of a talentless hap, just by making them famous. They say they can discover somebody, make a star our of a nobody, who happens to have both the talent and personality for a singing career. And they only do that every 3-4 seasons, by the way.
Yes we will have to agree to disagree. Whatever Idol says, the only reason it cares about making a "star" is to promote it's own brand. They are NOT about developing artists or even finding true talent. They are looking for a next big thing they can use to pimp out their own product.
Nothing against those who audition at all. It's the mindset I don't like...
and please don't forget John too.. I love the four of them
QFT.
I say if we're going to compare Adam and Freddie let's compare them singing with the same band at the same venue.
This first video is Queen/Freddie Hammersmith 1975 and is a full performance. They've been performing together for over 4 years and have at least 3 albums and have been touring together. I believe this is a professional recording.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2Maw3bSXpcThis next video is Queen/Adam Hammersmith 2012 and is a full performance. They had ten days of practice and this is their 6th performance after the 10 days practice. This is recorded by someone in the audience with a camera or cell phone.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejoecEszxqoI just have this to say: THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL FREDDIE WIPES THE FLOOR WITH ADAM...NO WAY!
Like others we'll have to agree to disagree there. Especially considering it was well documented that Freddie and Brian had a severe case of the flu that night! AND Fred still gives a HELLUVA performance. But as I also said before, I am fully aware that this is only my opinion and you might not agree and that's fine
For me John always has been for Queen what Ringo has been for the Beatles. I know that it isn't true and that I may be totally wrong here, because John is a wonderful songwriter and
maybe a genius as well. But I don't want to put him in the same league as Brian, Roger and Freddie.
John is NO Ringo
John did write simpler songs, but as Brian often said what John did write sure as hell counted:
You're My Best Friend,
Spread Your Wings,
Another One Bites The Dust,
I Want To Break Free AND not only that - if you could ever hunt down the isolated Queen tracks and listen to the bass you will find a very lyrical bass player. His basslines are usually like a song in and of itself. Unlike typical four note bassists who just hit the bottom note of the chord, John has very tasty runs as well.
Adam's an extrovert and very social person, while Freddie's the exact opposite of Adam. Freddie was a very private and shy person, he even didn't always open himself up to Brian & Roger.
This is very true. Queen got slammed by critics and journalists in the beginning and also he was burned by some people he trusted so he became quite closed off in interviews and far from the Freddie his friends knew. But he was also a desperately private man off stage and super shy, surprising most who would meet him.
Maybe Adam is moving to London to work with Brian and Roger on new Queen music and get ready for a US tour next year ... :-)
#wildspeculation #nobasis #carryon
... or there gett'n tied to a mopping device. J/K
REALLY, REALLY like this scenario.
Which is not going to happen. Coz if Brian and Roger make a new music with Adam, it will be a B+R+A music and not a Queen music. And if this happen it will be in Adam's album not theirs. The new Queen music will still have Freddie or Brian or Roger's voice in them.
But I nice speculations
I would almost guarantee no Queen + AL album. I mean you can never say never, but I'm HIGHLY doubtful that would happen. Could there be a song or two? Perhaps. It is far more likely that Brian plays on a track on Adam's 3rd album.
Did Freddie take the high note at the end of WWTLF in any of his performances? Anyone know?
The original performance did not have the high note at the end, this is a rearrangment by Brian since Freddie's death. So there was no need for a try. At the same time, the only time Freddie had a chance to sing the song was on his 1986 tour and he had vocal problems throughout that tour.
Two of my fav performances.
Talon,
Can you tell us more about the song writing process Queen used? Any good stories? I heard Crazy Little Thing Called Love was written by Freddie in 5 minutes in the bathtub or some such story. I assume this would just be the lyrics & melody. Would the rest of the band members then write their parts for their own instruments or was it more collaborative? I know Freddie played piano and Roger played a number of other instruments, what about Brian and John?
My reason for asking is that I think the song writing process for rock bands is different than for a solo pop artists relying on a producer to add all the instrumentals on a computer. Would like to understand these processes better.
Thanks for all of your information and opinions!
Sure! You can look at my Queen thread for most of the "stories" but I'll give you a few snippets here as well.
BUT first off for songwriting process. The general idea is that each member would have a basic structure of the song done to present to the band who would then fill it out with their own ideas. So if a song says written by Freddie Mercury, it doesn't mean Brian wasn't involved for instance. Hell there are cases, such as Radio Ga Ga where it is said that Freddie completely rearranged the song on Roger and yet it is Roger who retained the writing credit. BUT it generally is a good guideline who mostly wrote it. Bo Rap on the other hand was all Freddie. The band even had no idea how it would sound until they heard it back because it was all in Freddie's head, even the guitar riffs.
BUT to answer:
Freddie played piano and also played some guitar. He was very self deprecating about his guitar playing although Brian has stated that Freddie was much better than he thought and wrote some weird stuff on guitar - for example
Ogre Battle was written by Freddie on guitar.
Roger played everything but reportedly enjoys writing on a keyboard best
John played bass, guitar, and keyboards
Brian played everything and learned instruments such as the harp for
Love Of My LifeAs far as songwriting goes though:
Crazy Little Thing - was written by Freddie in the bathtub in 5 minutes. He got everyone into the studio and told Mack he wanted to record a complete demo before Brian got in there and started being his perfectionist self to the point where Freddie even recorded a guitar solo of sorts. Brian got there to a complete song and just threw his own guitar solo over the top.
Bo Rap - Freddie had written the whole thing out in his head, and on cocktail napkins, and the like. The band had no idea what to expect when the whole thing was finished!
Under Pressure - Reportedly David Bowie came upon Queen in the studio and the five began jamming on old classics when David said they should try writing something. Based slightly on a Queen demo called
Feel Like either David or John came up with the bass track and they just riffed off each other. David had an idea that Freddie should go into the studio isolated and sing whatever he felt and then David would do the same without hearing what the other sang. David cheated though and Freddie was surprised at how well it was gelling
Brian wasn't ultimately happy in the direction so he kind of bowed out to the others. Eventually afterwards Freddie and David met to mix it together with Roger acting as mediator.
Who Wants To Live Forever - Brian watched a short snippet of the film and Brian couldn't get the theme out of his head and had it mostly written after a 20 minute car ride home
Innuendo - Reportedly it began as a jam session with the three on a concert hall stage and Freddie in a studio and Fred liked what he heard so much that he bolted to the stage to begin shaping it.
The Show Must Go On - The keyboard/drum riff in the beginning was what initiated the song. That was Roger/John. From there Brian took over and with Freddie wrote the rest.
Just a few! But really there is no SET way. There are songs that were completely written (and even sometimes almost completely recorded) by one member. There were collaborations that were real collaborations. There are tracks that were rearranged by other band members.
But whew! Long post and I think I'm caught up :D
