I did "OK" on exercise. I need to retool my schedule now that it's getting hot again, and just make it part of my routine to do it first thing. If I wait it is too hot. What I am jazzed about is the return of the organic farm baskets and really encourage everyone to try it or going to your local farmers' market. The featured veggie this week is TURNIPS!!! You might say that turnips are the forgotten starch. Once a staple in homes throughout the US and Europe, they have been pushed out by the overwhelming popularity of the potato, to the point where many people reach adulthood without ever having tasted a turnip (I had never had them until last year!). It is interesting to note that some people fear the "strong" taste of the turnip. In general, organic veggies do taste stronger than regular grocery store veggies, which have been bred for other qualities such as size or shelf life. We have forgotten what veggies are supposed to taste like! Health benefits of turnips: - Turnips have 1/3 the calories & carbs of the potato and may substitute one-for-one for potatoes in soups and stews - One cup of turnips has more Vitamin C than a glass of orange juice - Very high in Vitamins A and K - Reduce risk of lung and colorectal cancers - Antifungal, antibacterial, and antiparasitic Note: Turnips are not recommended for people with thyroid problems. Recipe: Caramelized Turnips This recipe serves four and scales up or down easily. 3 cups diced turnips (I did not peel them, just scrubbed them and cut off the root and stem) 1/4 cup water 1 chicken bouillon cube 1 Tb. butter brown sugar to taste Place the diced turnips in a skillet with the water and bouillon cube over medium heat. Simmer until tender, stirring occasionally, about 15 minutes (you will need to keep adding a bit of water as it cooks away). Stir in enough butter and let melt to lightly coat turnips. Sprinkle on brown sugar and gently cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 more minutes.

Wednesday - Check in Day
juniemoon - love the veggie of the week posts. I'm going to try the slow-cooker sweet potato from last week today. Question on what do you use to scrub your veggies? Dish brushes are so soft and don't seem to do much and those squishy plastic scrubbers get so dirty because they do take some of the peel off. What's your secret?
I'm doing fairly well. The scale isn't changing but considering my knee and back/hip for the last couple of weeks I'm happy. I'm rubbing Pennsaid on my knee and visiting a chiropractor for my back. Haven't substituted for a week because I was doing too much standing/walking for my knee. That worked out well for my other job but it's all sitting which as you guessed isn't great for my hip. More reasons to get this weight lost.
I'm doing fairly well on not snaking too much. I'm going to have to have the family go on their own meal plans. We are trying to fatten the kid up (picky eater), slim me down, and the hubby has his own views of what constitutes "good", mainly things with salt and cheese. So everyone is going to cook for themselves.
Oh I had goals didn't I?
Not bad on water - doing my vitamin with MSM daily at least and then mostly thru my other bottle. For once I didn't down the quart of chocolate milk I bought. Still some left from last week. Apparently it has a lot of calories. What? Yes I've known that for years but starting tomorrow was always a good excuse.
Supplements - I do different kinds of omega 3 (fish, flax, krill) for my eyes and others. Ok, just filled up my pill counter.
Get home snacks - I did really well but haven't needed them this week. I am doing carrots w/peanut butter.
lol, chatty today. Keep on keeping on.

Jablea -- I'm loving this veggie brush: Chef'n Palm Brush
Great design and washes up really well. It's kind of expensive but seems to be holding up well.

I'm still here, but have gained a couple pounds (unfortunately). Totally stressed out for a while, but calming down again and trying to get back in control. Went to gym today for the first time in 2 weeks. Not giving up, just took a little time off.

There's an organic weekly program here as well, Juniemoon, which seems to do really well. I live in an area which is quite a "foodie" area, as well as a wine region, with farmers markets several times a week, and several small businesses creating specialty products, such as sea salt harvested locally, local pasta etc. We are not participating in that program, I don't do the cooking here, but grow a few things ourselves organically. Do you get much fruit in there, or mostly veggies?
I seem to finally be back on track as I lost 2.2 lbs this week. Yeah! Glad to be heading in the right direction again. Got in 4 walks, and went out after weighing myself this morning also, although have developed a problem with my right knee, which I've been icing a few times as it was a bit swollen. Trying to drink more water as well, which I always find easier now that it's warming up. Quite warm here this week, well above normal for this time of year.
Hope everyone is hanging in there! Hope the hip and knee gets better soon Jablea! It's such a pain, literally and figuratively, isn't it when you've got something like that going on.
See you next week!

Still not real regular with my walking schedule but did really good this week in the weight department. Down 2.2 since last Wednesday. Celebrated by buying next lower size in the style pants I wear for work.

Not much to report this week. Feel a little silly, but am still gonna report that I lost .4...seems too small to mention, but makes me feel good to at least have made tiny progress. Many of you are doing sooo well! Fantastic! My biggest problem is not being able to exercise. My only time to walk where I feel secure is around grocery stores holding onto a cart...ever since I had spinal surgery, my balance is off and it is especially hard outside. I have to always look down and go very slow. My best exercise was when I went to the YMCA warm water pool and did water walking...can't fall over there. :)But since my DH got sick 3 years ago, I can't leave him for the amount of time it takes to do that which was over 3 hours including driving time, changing, etc. etc. So without any real exercise, I don't burn off many calories. Not trying to make excuses, but my arthritis also limits my ability to do other kinds of non-walking exercises. Sorry, didn't mean to go off on that tangent! I'm really happy others are doing so well. As I have mentioned before, it really is helpful to come here and have to be accountable.

Or even just whenever you are watching TV just walk in place. For your balance issues just have a chair or something in front of you to hang on to. It's harder to keep track of how much you are doing but you could just time it. Best of all doing it that way allows you to do short sessions with rests in between so as not to overwhelm your muscles and joints. Believe me this is just as beneficial to your health as getting out and walking elsewhere. There are even studies that show just standing up every 5 or 10 minutes is beneficial to your health. Any extra activity you can add will help along with keeping track of your diet.

Thank you rihannsu for the suggestion. I am going to try that. Even if I just do 5 minutes at a time due to my knees and hips, that will be better than what I do now. I really like the idea of getting up every 5-10 minutes! I sometimes spend 2+ consecutive hours on the computer sitting. The time just gets away from me, and before I know it, I've been sitting there way too long. So I will make it a point to get up and go into another room just to get some movement.
