I am interested because I was a HUGE sugar addict most of my life. Used to put 12 teaspoons of sugar in my little 3/4 c of coffee w/ 1/2c Half n Half. Lived on Reese's cups & fast food french fries. Starting at the beginning of 2013 I gradually reduced the sugar in my coffee and now use 1 teaspoon of agave or honey and 1/4c fat free half n half, rarely have french fries & although I still have my Reese's I'm down to the little minis. My tastes in food have changed tremendously. Right now I am having a breakfast of Strawberries, Blueberries & blackberries with pecans and NO added sugar. It tastes sweet enough to me now whereas before it would have tasted almost sour and too tangy.
I don't crave a lot of the sugary stuff I used too and don't find it tastes as good as it used to even when I do have it. For me what worked was never saying to myself that I couldn't have something, I just focused on looking for fresher more real food options to try but if I really wanted some junk food I ate it. I am finding now that when I do have french fries they often taste so salty it's like eating brine so actually kind of an unpleasant buzz kill. So my food choices have changed more due to changing tastes than anything else.

I could have done better on exercise. I'm so bored with aerobics. I did walk several times and I downloaded some yoga videos and did two. I used to do yoga but haven't in several years. Forgot about how much strength was involved! The featured veggie this week is a fruit -- STRAWBERRIES!!! Who doesn't love strawberries? The good news is that it's almost impossible to eat too many, for their health benefits equal their great taste!
Health benefits of strawberries: - An outstanding source of Vitamin C and other antioxidants.- Although deliciously sweet, actually help lower/regulate blood sugar - Combat chronic inflammation, including bowel disease, macular degeneration, and arthritis - Help reduce cholesterol - Help protect against breast, cervical, colon, and esophageal cancer
Keep your strawberries cold and eat them as soon as you can for maximum freshness. If you have more than you can eat, just remove the tops and freeze them. Recipe: Strawberry Starchild Whip 1 cup low-fat milk or almond milk 1/4 cup honey 2 cups frozen strawberries 1 cup vanilla yogurt 1 cup crushed ice Place in a blender and mix until smooth. Makes two smoothies.

Thanks for the strawberry recipe Juniemoon! We have them growing in our garden and it looks like we'll have a nice little crop, but the fruit hasn't quite formed yet, so it will be a little while yet. When we buy California strawberries outside our own strawberry season, because they are not as sweet we make a little mixture of orange juice concentrate and honey and just before serving put the strawberries through that, serve with a little dab of whipcream on top and garnish with a flower such as small violet or individual geranium flower, both of which are edible, and it looks and tastes great.
Did good with the walking but up .4 lbs. again, which surprised me a little as I thought I'd done ok. Good thing we're going out for the anniversary dinner tonight instead of last night!
Keep the faith Scotia! Every little bit helps. You're down .4, I'm up .4 this week and I'm disappointed in that, so be pleased with the loss. I like Rihannsu's idea of little walks. Is an exercise bike an option for you?

Thanks, fiercelier for the encouragement. I had an exercise bike some years ago but my spinal stenosis paired with the hip and knee action required to ride caused me to have to discontinue using it. That's why the warm water pool was so good because it took stress off those areas. I just need to find some way to get back to the YMCA!

Fed Up was really interesting. It basically is showing how the food industry as a whole manipulates the government and even the scientific community through lobbying and research funding. They talked about some studies that have shown that sugar in large quantities is as addictive as cocaine. Mice addicted to cocaine were given free access to sugar water and cocaine and chose the sugar. The problem is that ALL processed foods now have added sugar in some way or another. Also at one point the World Health Organization in response to studies showing the dangers of high sugar diets were going to revise diet guidelines to say that sugar should not be more than 10% of diet but the Sugar Industry lobbied Senators who put pressure on the Health Secretary (?) and in the end the US actually threatened to withhold the funding given to the WHO and got the guidelines to state that sugar could be as much as 25% of the diet.
I should have taken notes as I can't even remember everything they covered about how the Food industry has screwed us over. Oh another thing was how the sugar industry also lobbied to keep the label requirements from listing the %Daily Value on sugar like they do on pretty much everything else on the label and all the "Reduced-Fat" foods had more sugar added so that the taste would still be appealing because reducing the fat kills a lot of the flavor. So all the "health foods" are actually higher in sugar than they were before the "reduced fat" craze.
The point of the movies is that the food industry is behaving the same way as the Tobacco Industry did for so many years and that what they are doing to food is as dangerous or more to our health.
