Thanks, rihannsu, for the report on "Fed Up." As with tobacco, I wonder also about the role of farm subsidies and sugar protectionism in all this. I went to a talk last week about nutrition and a new food pyramid that was pretty interesting -- said some of the same things you mentioned. I'll look at some of the materials and post them or thoughts here when I get the chance. Would be interested in what you guys think. Stardust, I hear ya. I find myself slacking on exercise and not even sure exactly why. But everyday is a new day. Now for our veggie of the week -- SUMMER SQUASH!!!!! Summer squash is inexpensive and abundant. As a member of the "starch" family of vegetables, it is extremely low in calories and carbs, and plays a great role on your plate in place of veggies like potatoes or corn. Here are some of the health benefits of summer squash: - High in Vitamin C and beta carotene - High in fiber - High in magnesium which is good for the blood pressure and helps reduce risk of heart attacks and strokes - For the men in our lives, good for the prostate - High in compounds that protect the eye from cataracts and macular degeneration - High in manganese which is good for the bones and preventing osteoporosis Recipe: Italian Style Squash This recipe was really good. Makes 4 servings and scales easily up or down. It can also be made with zucchini. Preheat oven to 350. Trim the ends off 2 medium to large squash and split in half length-wise. Score the cut side with a fork about 1/4 inch deep and set aside. Then, make a topping as follows: 1/4 cup mayo 1/8 tsp. onion powder 1/8 salt dash pepper dash garlic powder 1 Tbl. Italian flavored bread crumbs (I didn't have these so I just added oregano to the topping) Divide topping among the squash halves and bake for 20 minutes on a cookie sheet until golden and tender. My squash were big so I baked them a little longer.

This is one of the resource links on the Fedup movie website. It is Harvard School of health "healthy eating plate" www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/healthy-eating-plate/My check in is that I am up about .8 lbs. Haven't walked this week and been eating out a bit more than usual so no surprise.

Checking in but forgot to weigh myself, which is not a bad thing as this past week has basically been a complete miss as to watching what I eat. Company all week, more company for dinner, out for dinner, desserts, home made goodies. Just wasn't able to stick to any kind of plan so I'm sure I gained some weight again.
Company is now gone and trying to get back on track today. Unlike Rihannsu I have not lost my taste for sweet stuff, so now that I've been eating more of it, it'll be harder again to cut it out of my diet.
Hope everyone is having more success than me this week!

Wednesday Check In I'm hoping I'm down one but we'll see. I didn't get to weigh this morning and I don't have a new fangled tenths of a pound scale so I have to go by being one weight during the middle of the day which in my case almost always means I'll weigh less in the morning. I haven't been particularly hungry, maybe the pain meds for my knee help.

Despite a lunch out with a friend that led to a mini binge the rest of the day, I managed to lose .4...not much to be sure, but I had to work really hard the rest of the week to keep from having a gain. The closer I get to my goal, the harder it is to make the scale move. (well, easy to get it to go in the wrong direction...unfortunately. Go the the Dr. Monday for my semi-annual blood work. At least since I was last there my weight is less thanks to coming here.
