Adam's version is actually one half step higher than Renee's. I am sure a techie could make it work. However, tho the song was very effective for Adam on Idol, and he wrings emotion out of it, melodically, and in terms of vocal prowess, it is very simple and repetitive. I'd love for them to duet on something more challenging for both their voices. Renee is one of the few opera singers I have heard who can and does modify how she sings to fit the song genre. She is able to turn off and on her "opera voice." I am pretty sure Adam can do the same. We have heard it to some extent already. While I agree that the song is quite repetitive, I would say that whoever (Adam, Michael Orland or Rickey Minor) came up with the AI arrangement is a genius (I suspect it was a cooperation). They have added enough variation to prevent it from getting boring, and in all the right places! Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow -> going down instead of the usual up ...I find it hard to take -> this time going up! It's a very, very mad world mad world -> again going up instead of repeating the same monotone way ... Sit and listen, sit and listen -> up! listen! Went to school and I was very nervous -> best word ever! he found the vibrato and used it every single time. Trade Mark. No one knew me, no one knew me -> high prolonged meeee Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson -> emphasizing the lesson instead of going down in the same circle Look right through me, look right through me -> on stage, he pretty much stood up together with increasing the volume on mee ... And I find it kinda funny I find it kinda sad -> alternative melody, we don't want to be bored here... And so on. Try to listen to any other slow version, including SuBo's or Renee Fleming's and your ears will be bored to tears (if ears could cry, of course)

I got: Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth You’re extremely smart and cool but a little shy, so a lot of people feel intimidated by your presence. But everyone who gets to know you understands that you’re loyal, supportive, and inspiring.

I also think that Adam could sing with Renee F. and he would not fall off in quality, like for example Josh Groban does, imo, when singing with her. She is very generous to him in her introduction, but I think the quality difference is significant. Adam would not have that problem.
Having said that, I do think that Renee Fleming's Mad World is a pretty good example for why the reverse does not necessarily work either. What I mean is, the simplified idea that opera singing is so much superior and therefore any opera singer can sing pop material with ease, whereas a pop singer cannot sing opera, no matter how much he/she tried, is not true either.
I am not even going to address the rediculous arrangement, because that not relevant to the topic, but just the singing.
So, here is somebody who clearly is brilliant at both phrasing and enunciation, when singing her usual material. Here in pop, I guess she was told to cut off all her ending consonants or syllables, because they are all gone. Her phrasing is such that it sounds like she would not be able to string together more than three words, which of course we know is not true. Why? Because, I presume, somebody taught her to do it that way, with the hope that it sounds pop. Well strangely it does not sound like pop. Because, now it sounds stiff and technical, and without the rhythmical motion and emotional looseness that I would expect from a pop singer. It also sounds boring. She limits herself too much vocally and range wise, imo. If I would not know, who is singing here, I would not give that version any credence, artistically, even though Renee obviously sings it technically perfectly.
I have to say, Adam is and remains for me unique in his ability to cross over so many genres and even into the classical world, to the extent he wants it.
Of these two MW versions, there is to me absolutely no question, which one I find superior, and those that know me, know that I appreciate opera and certainly know at least a bit about it. But Adam's version beats hers by a mile.
Yes, Adam singing with Renee (or Anna Netrebko) would be interesting, I just don't think that he has any interest in this experiment. And from a market standpoint, I cannot recommend that move for him either, so probably this remains a mental exercise for a late Saturday night.
Never mind me....moving on.

Even though it sounds pretty much like the same arrangement Adam used, Adam's version sounds much more hauntingly beautiful. He brings out much more emotion in the song.
