Coven got it from Voodoo -- and it originated in Africa (the origin of most Voodun symbols/lore).

Adam's version is actually one half step higher than Renee's. I am sure a techie could make it work. However, tho the song was very effective for Adam on Idol, and he wrings emotion out of it, melodically, and in terms of vocal prowess, it is very simple and repetitive. I'd love for them to duet on something more challenging for both their voices. Renee is one of the few opera singers I have heard who can and does modify how she sings to fit the song genre. She is able to turn off and on her "opera voice." I am pretty sure Adam can do the same. We have heard it to some extent already. Cassie, What would be your dream song for them to duet? Gee, there are so many great duets and I am drawing a complete blank. All I Ask of You from Phantom is beautiful, but it is more for a baritone. Pitched too low for Adam (unless he surprises us with a lower low register with strength). Maybe "Somewhere" from West Side Story. I am sure there are pop songs, too, and jazz. Just can't think now. Sorry.

While I agree that the song is quite repetitive, I would say that whoever (Adam, Michael Orland or Rickey Minor) came up with the AI arrangement is a genius (I suspect it was a cooperation). They have added enough variation to prevent it from getting boring, and in all the right places! Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow -> going down instead of the usual up ...I find it hard to take -> this time going up! It's a very, very mad world mad world -> again going up instead of repeating the same monotone way ... Sit and listen, sit and listen -> up! listen! Went to school and I was very nervous -> best word ever! he found the vibrato and used it every single time. Trade Mark. No one knew me, no one knew me -> high prolonged meeee Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson -> emphasizing the lesson instead of going down in the same circle Look right through me, look right through me -> on stage, he pretty much stood up together with increasing the volume on mee ... And I find it kinda funny I find it kinda sad -> alternative melody, we don't want to be bored here... And so on. Try to listen to any other slow version, including SuBo's or Renee Fleming's and your ears will be bored to tears (if ears could cry, of course) I think some of the AI arrangement was from the Gary Jules version: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYY-a0_Bb9YIf you read what I wrote while listening to Gary's version (or any of the other copies of his version I mentioned above), you will see that he is doing exactly the same melody in every line. No variation. I suspect he wanted it this way in order to illustrate the madness and "going in circles". Adam broke that monotonous up and down and made it interesting. Which was my point SuBo: www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_EJG97QkOgWhen listening to these other versions, I CRAVE the variations Adam does, and they never come. He broke the song for me (by making it his own). I cannot listen to any other version now

I forgot that Adam dressed up as the Phantom when he was a little kid. So, for a duet, how about the title song, "Phantom of the Opera"? Can't get more theatrical than that! And wicked hard to sing.

I agree that it was intentional to emphasize the "going in circles." But, Adam somehow conveys all the emotional content and makes the song melodically interesting.
