3.21.14 It's a Max Martin Reunion on A3!

Q3, I have no idea where you got your time machine stored, but I would like to borrow it at times.

So much of what I was thinking about/ concluding since last night, and wanted to write about the MM engagement has already been said. By you.

The biggest one, imo: It's pop, but it is amazingly targeted towards each artist. Yes, they each get their specific sound.

Well, what is Adam's sound? The defining essence that makes something an Adam Lambert song?

I think that is a many million dollar question, that has yet to be answered. And it is also clear to anyone with a little bit of insight, that for Adam this question is not simple. Somebody like Dr Luke, who is a pro, and made great songs for others, had no clue where to start and just tried to push his tried and true on Adam. Bad idea. Everybody understands the voice and the vast range of genres, rhythmic choices, opportunities that are possible with Adam, but how do you capture that in a song or an album?

A song writer's camp is imo the clear acknowledgement that this is exactly understood, by whoever is sponsoring this right now.

They did not sit down in Sweden and clonk out 20 identical songs for Rhianna, to be mass produced and then put on a record, which is why the comparison to the New Yorker article ends right here. They got together to come up with a vision, on where Adam could or should take his musical career. And then, they hope to make that result in a number of songs, obviously.

So, now we can speculate what they will come up with:

To me, the one indication I have heard again and again, and that adds up for me, is 'Prince'. Prince stands at the cross-roads of rock music and funk/dance music, but also has a lot of soul and some R&B and tons of other influences in his music and therefore is a perfect foundation or guide post for Adam, imo.

The area where I run into a problem thinking this through, is that Prince is about as far away from manufactured pop, as I can imagine it. I have a tough time getting my head around any statement that would put Prince and Max Martin in the same sentence.

There are some stepping stones in the middle. Pharrell and Nile have both followed some similar or parallel influences, but produced more generic pop songs and with high quality too. So, it can be done. An Adam has sought them out and worked with them.

The question is, whether this team that is assembled in Sweden is able to figure this all out on his behalf and show a path forward. Somebody mentioned above that playing back those hit songs from the 90s and 2000s sound dated. Well, yes, that is because they are songs from the past and are dated. So MM and his team need to update their sound too. They need an artist to do it with.

 The music scene has changed dramatically in the last 4  years, the sound from 2005 does not work anymore today. Adam is by all accounts somebody who inspires. He is charismatic and talented and he does have ideas. He is able to be a catalyst in any team he is put into. He has inspired people who are themselves greats in the song writing department. He has inspired Nile, Pharrell, Brian and Roger. There is in my mind no question that Adam will bring this gift, to inspire others, into this workshop as well. Adam is not there as a singer who has a few songs written for him, he is there because he is bringing his artistic inspiration with him and is transferring that to this writing team.

This is a two way street. Of course, Adam is there to have songs written for him, yes, sure, but there is a contribution that flows in the other direction too. And that is my point.

Eventually, the pressure will be on to develop a hit song, I know. But hopefully, they were able to first leap forward and someone created a new sound that will then allow all this to happen.

Montreal doesn't have the "Choose your tickets from our map" feature, but it has the next best thing. You can see which sections are all gone ( a lot!) and if you try for 2 on the floor, they come up row XX. If you try for 4, zero! I'd say at one week after sales started, Montreal is doing just great!

The NJ arena is pretty much just another NYC venue. I have no doubt, the sales will be great. MSG sold out in less than 24 hours, so I think the market is there! And the people that study this and have all their $$ invested, know the market.
