Last Thursday night a band that belongs in the Rock Hall of Fame, Nirvana, was inducted. It was the first time they were on the ballot. The remaining members of the original band were at the ceremony and graciously accepted the award.
Earlier in the same program, the original four Kiss members — Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley and Peter Criss — who had been eligible for induction for nearly 15 years finally made it. In his own style, singer Gene Simmons marred with controversial comments, criticized the hall for including rap, and he chose not to perform to protest the Hall’s choice to induct the band’s original lineup.
One of the KISS band members, Peter Criss, used the occasion and the associated press events to promote his “tell all” memoir.
None of the feuding band members thought to recognize Bill Aucoin, the legendary rock’n’roll manager who discovered KISS and basically made them stars. Bill passed away four years ago and was probably the one who should have been inducted into the Rock Hall. Bill also happened to be gay.
Roman Fernandez Bill’s longtime life partner, had an interesting comment….
I read a few articles about this year’s Rock Hall induction ceremony because I am a Nirvana fan. I was not expecting to solve a mystery that had sort or puzzled me 5 years ago, but that I set aside.
This information about KISS is interesting to me on three levels. First, and most importantly, Adam was used as the example of a current gay rock star.
Secondly, the “found-on-lunchboxes” band’s frontman, Gene Simmons, was very critical of Adam when Adam “revealed” he was gay.
And finally, because it answers the question of why Adam could borrow Bob Mackie angel wings and pull some platform Kiss boots from his "private collection," and add some black latex and leather, and actually pull of a style that was both classy and still did not clash with KISS.
Adam on the Idol Finale – performing with KISS – May 2 , 2009
youtu.be/THljRErhR7o
On May 22, 2009, following the Adam Lambert + KISS Idol Finale performance, Gene Simmons was did not have much respect for Adam’s ability to sing rock music:
Gene Simmons expanded on his view of Adam's future in June 2009 after Adam was featured in the cover story of Rolling Stone:
Full Circle Moments
Now we come full circle, and find out the style, image, makeup, concept and management of KISS was “gay, gay, gay…”
About Adam’s Boots
In an interview, Adam revealed that his boots from the KISS performance came from his closet. He also revealed that Gene Simmons was afraid Adam would fall off his boots. (I can hear his laugh from that interview right now!)
The killer platform boots are now reside in the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego along with the rest of Adam’s KISS-inspired costume.
It was not a new look for Adam....
Adam Lambert performing his original song "Crawl Thru Fire" at The Zodiac Show. Avalon Hollywood 9/9/08.
A New Circle Begins
And to end this full circle moment and start a new one, perhaps by now, Adam has proven he can sing a rock song – even if it is with a band “that that serves his particular style….. like Queen.” At least Gene got one thing right.
And this time, he will step into the shoes of Freddie Mercury, well not exactly shoes... This time Adam will be bringing his boots to his side project, frontman for Queen.
And those are not just any boots, they are Louboutins!
Postscript: More about Boots, by Adam's Neighbor!
Life has small circles!
I dedicate this song to Mr. Gene Simmons! Please, sir, time to rethink your view of so many things!

For Flashback Friday, Adam Lambert melted our collective Glambert hearts by posting a vintage picture of his mom in high school to Instagram. Leila Lambert was a familiar face during Adam’s Idol days, always beaming with pride from the crowd. (We were right there with her!)
Adam captioned the photo “Look at my Mom’s high school yearbook photo! So cute!!!” No wonder where the kid got his good looks.
Who doesn’t love a mama’s boy?

The 2014 "Part-of-the-World" Queen + Adam Lambert Tour Countdown!
4.12.14 by Q3
The countdown moves on and the start of this epic tour gets closer. Only 68 days to go! (only 10 weeks!)
#68 “Brighton Rock” (composed 1973, released 1974)
Written by Brian May.
Released on Sheer Heart Attach on November 8, 1974
Today’s countdown song is a real contender for the upcoming Queen + Adam Lambert Tour setlist.
Brian May wrote "Brighton Rock" in 1973 before the completion of Queen II (variations of the solo were often played live as part of Son And Daughter), but time restrictions meant that the song was not ready for inclusion on an album until Sheer Heart Attack. The title is something of a pun: Brighton rock is a long, cylindrical sugar candy traditional to that seaside resort. The term was also iconic in UK pop culture as the title of a dark Graham Greene thriller/noir novel later adapted into a successful film starring Richard Attenborough as a teenage sociopath.
The song, the first track on the album, tells the story of two young lovers named Jenny and Jimmy meeting in Brighton on a public holiday. Jenny cannot linger because she is afraid her mother will find out "how I spent my holiday", but afterwards "writes a letter every day"; Jimmy, eager on the day, is not so happy with her "nothing can my love erase": now he is the one afraid of discovery by "my lady".
The song is probably best known for its lengthy guitar solo interlude, which was rather similar to the solo of 1968 Smile song "Blag". This featured May's technique of using multiple echoes used to build up guitar harmony and contrapuntal melodic lines. The studio version only contains one "main" guitar and one "echoed" guitar for a short section, but live, he would usually split his guitar signal into "main" and two "echoed", with each going to a separate bank of amplifiers.
“Brighton Rock” was never released as a single but it was one of two B-side tracks on the 3" “Killer Queen: CD single reissued in 1988. It was preceded by “Flick of the Wrist.”

“Brighton Rock” (Album track)
youtu.be/TdUKi3_QntE
"Brighton Rock" features Brian’s unique guitar sound layered with multiple echoes and the full vocal range of lead singer Freddie Mercury.
The song's opening includes what appears to be carnival-like music and someone whistling the song "I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside", an old English Music Hall song, written in the early 1900's by John A. Glover-Kind. A "sing-song" version of the very same song can be heard in the outro of "Seven Seas of Rhye", the last song on the previous Queen album (Queen II). Since Brighton Rock is the first song on Queen's next album, Sheer Heart Attack, the melody, in essence, ties the two works together.
“Brighton Rock” Live
This song was born in live concerts and evolved over time. Brian often used this song as the place for a long, crowd-pleasing guitar solo.
Even before it was recorded, Brian fiddled around with this song. He had the general concept and part of what became “Brighton Rock” early in 1973, but hadn’t figured out the entire composition.
It's on the end of "Son And Daughter" on Queen Live At The BBC, a live broadcast performance which was before Sheer Heart Attack came out.

BBC session at Langham 1 Studio,London, July 25 1973.
Written by Brian May for the album Queen II (1973).
This version is extended well beyond the album version. After the vocals normally end, there is a new guitar and drum instrumental,a "Brighton Rock" style guitar solo,a false stop, then an additional verse and an instrumental outtro.Lenght 6:01.

Variations of this solo often featured during live Queen concerts, either as part of a rendition of Brighton Rock, a medley of it with some other songs (as witnessed on the News of the World tour where it segued after Freddie Mercury's multiple echoed vocal solo at the end of "White Man" and May's solo would segue into "The Prophet's Song" or "Now I'm Here"), or on its own as a guitar solo.

A live version of this song is on the Live Killers album. Released June 22, 1979

In the late '70s, the guitar solo was adapted to include some bass and drums, including a timpani solo by Roger Taylor (from October 1978 to November 1981). In 1980 and '81, the solo was included as a medley with "Keep Yourself Alive", before becoming a performance in its own right. During the recent tour of Queen + Paul Rodgers, a modified version, incorporating bits of "Chinese Torture" (from The Miracle) and the introduction from "Now I'm Here" was featured in the concerts. The Queen + Paul Rodgers version is featured on their live album Return of the Champions, simply titled "Guitar Solo". The live piece is often between nine to thirteen minutes long. May performed part of the "Brighton Rock" solo at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

“Brighton Rock”
Happy little day, Jimmy went away
Met his little Jenny on a public holiday
A happy pair they made, so decorously laid
'Neath the gay illuminations all along the promenade
"It's so good to know there's still a little magic in the air
I'll weave my spell"
"Jenny will you stay - tarry with me pray
Nothing 'ere need come between us tell me love, what do you say ?"
"Oh no I must away to my mum in disarray
If my mother should discover how I spent my holiday
It would be of small avail to talk of magic in the air
I'll say farewell"
O rock of ages, do not crumble, love is breathing still
O lady moon, shine down a little people magic if you will
Jenny pines away, writes a letter everyday
"We must ever be together, nothing can my love erase"
"Oh no I'm compromised, I must apologise
If my lady should discover how I spent my holidays..."
Oooh oooh oooh oooh
Ooh oh oh oh oh ha

One of the KISS band members, Peter Criss, used the occasion and the associated press events to promote his “tell all” memoir.
One of Makeup To Breakup’s most surprising, and refreshing, revelations is Criss’ acknowledgment of the central role gay men and gay iconography played in crafting the band’s image. Criss credits Sean Delaney—a choreographer, songwriter, and all-around renaissance man whom Criss says was a transvestite “in his spare time”—with helping create the group’s larger-than-life gothic persona. With its tight black spandex, bracelets, platform shoes, teased hair, leather, homoerotic choreography, and kabuki make-up, Kiss was the high-camp ideal of a hard-rock outfit. Kiss’ billion-dollar shtick was informed as much by the underground gay leather scene as Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath. Delaney even took Criss on extensive tours of gay bars.
Kiss’ manager, Bill Aucoin, was also gay….. Speaking of pretty, Criss spends much of the book casting aspersions on the sexuality of screamingly flamboyant frontman Paul Stanley, whom the group nicknamed He She for his raging androgyny and effeminate stage persona.

Roman Fernandez Bill’s longtime life partner, had an interesting comment….
Today, Fernandez is a rock’n’roll manager himself (his bands include Spider Rockets and the Super Fuzz). When I ask him what he would advise a gay rock star to do – come out or stay closeted – Fernandez replies, “Do whatever you want, do whatever makes you comfortable. Today it’s such a lame subject, every time you open a door, somebody else is coming out of the closet. It’s not the 70s. I mean, Elton John, I think pretty much everybody knew he was gay. I think of Freddie Mercury, or Pete Townshend when he released “Rough Boys,” and they never really suffered a backlash because of it. So it’s a little bit of a conundrum: people stay closeted to protect a rock’n’roll identity, but it’s been proven time and time again that people who are out never really suffer because of it. To some degree, it actually helps them. Adam Lambert is another great example.”

In a Q&A session posted today on Gene Simmons’ website, the Kiss bassist and recent Idol guest/Lambert duet partner had an already-controversial response to a fan who posted the following query: "Can you hook Adam Lambert up with someone to get him started on the way to be another rock god like you?"
His reply: "Respectfully, I don’t think Adam is a rock singer. He sounds much more convincing singing ballads, and Broadway shows. His voice doesn’t seem to have a ‘rock quality.’ But, I’m sure he’s going to do just fine."

Gene Simmons expanded on his view of Adam's future in June 2009 after Adam was featured in the cover story of Rolling Stone:
Adam Lambert’s much mediated coming out Rolling Stone issue is out on newsstands and, as expected, it’s causing the anticipated reaction in the media and the public. Celebrities are also joining in on the debate, with some of them embracing the American Idol runner up both musically and personally, while others not so much. Gene Simmons is torn between the two, as his latest interview with Fox reveals.
The rocker, who founded KISS more than three decades ago, says that, while Lambert is a brilliant kid with plenty of talent and even more potential, there are several things that might work against him, and kill his career in the bud. For starters, Simmons says, he should consider getting into a band and basically not even attempt a solo career in rock-n-roll music (or anything along those lines), since he does not have what it takes for it. Secondly, Simmons believes Adam should “shut up” about his preferences because no one really cares about that.
“Well you know he’s a very talented kid. He should have won American Idol as far as I am concerned. I will tell you that he deserves to be in a rock band that serves his particular style. He really doesn’t have a rock-n-roll voice. He’s more like Queen. He’d be great on Broadway. He’s a great belter and all that stuff. But unfortunately, he’s let the other story take center stage.” the rocker says, preparing to deliver what Fox aptly named “the kiss of death.” According to Simmons, who is now preparing for the launch of a new reality show on his life, talking private matters in public can only have negative consequences on Adam’s career – and the damage might have already been done in his case.
“That’s going to be a career killer. I think it’s going to be over before it’s begun and it’s unfortunate because the kid’s got the pipes. There’s no questions. He should really shut up. No one cares what you do behind closed doors anyway. And if you’re putting that front and center, you’re forcing us to deal with it and it’s going to be a turnoff for the masses.” Gene Simmons believes. Adam should focus exclusively on his music right now and forget everything else, Simmons says, because that’s what fans care about exclusively. Arguably, fans would beg to differ, as they’ve shown the American Idol runner-up their most sincere support for his decision to come out publicly.
It could very well be that Simmons might be feeling a pang of jealousy at how much hype Adam is generating, some are saying, which becomes obvious when the Fox reporter asks him how it was like for him to perform with Lambert on the AI finale. “How was it for him to perform with us, you mean? That’s right, I see. Well, you just have to realize who the governor is and who the little puppy is.” Simmons states.

Brian's response when asked about Hendrix influences on 'Brighton Rock':
"They might be although, I’d got away from listening to Hendrix quite a bit by that time and I’d like to think that that was more sort of developing my style really. Particularly the solo bit in the middle, which I’d been doing on the ‘Mott The Hoople’ tour and sort of gradually expanded and has got more and more ever since. Although, I keep trying to throw it out it keeps creeping back in. That involves the repeat device actually using it in time, which I don’t think, had been done before up to that time. It’s a very nice device to work with because you can build up harmonies or cross rhythms and it’s not a multiple repeat like Hendrix used or even The Shadows used, which is fairly indiscriminate, sort of makes a nice noise. But this is a single repeat, which comes back, and sometimes I’ll add a second one too. So you can actually plan or else experiment and do a sort of “Phew” type effect. So that was at it’s very beginnings on ‘Brighton Rock’, and became more developed after that."

Interesting Trivia: Original Working Titles include Happy Little Fuck, Happy Little Day, Blackpool Rock, Bognor Ballad, Southend Sea Scout, Skiffle Rock and Herne Bay. Session engineer Mike Stone is the likely culprit of some of the titles, though the band members themselves frequently employed working titles during the song development process.
