Interesting about Queen not being considered rock by some. I wonder if there are people who don't consider the Beatles to be rock. They were pretty eclectic as they progressed. Many people classify The Beatles as pop-rock or rock, pop. But almost everyone classifies Queen as a rock band. The Wikipedia entry for Queen, for example, list them as "Genres Rock". But did people call the Beatles pop-rock at the time they were active? It seems that there are a lot of rock performers that would be classified as pop using more modern tastes/standards. Is there any rock and roll act from the 1950s that sounds like how many people define rock now? I guess that gets back the to discussion we've had before on Atop about how one defines the rock sound.

First, great post, Q3, I loved it, thanks! Second, I am really glad Nirvana was inducted. I read about it, and it was Michael Stipe who did it - they were friends, Michael and Kurt, and appreciated each other so much. He gave an amazing speech. Third, I don't know much about Gene and KISS, but I most definitely didn't know "the central role gay men and gay iconography played in crafting the band’s image ". Together with the fact that they failed to recognize their gay manager, Bill Aucoin, "the legendary rock’n’roll manager who discovered KISS and basically made them stars", just serves to prove that Gene's criticism of Adam is nothing personal, but a part of morally questionable opinions and attitudes of Simmons on many subjects. I would really love to hear why Fernandez thinks Adam's coming out helped his career, it's an interesting observation. And I liked his advice re coming out in general. Lastly, I am not sure I understood this properly: did Adam decide to wear his KISS duet outfit because HE was aware of the band's homoerotic iconography, or the AI producers? Also, if Adam was aware of it, his casual remarks about where he got his wings from and about his shoes get one more, very interesting, dimension to them:) Adam has never spoken about why he put together that outfit -- at least not that I recall. I am now pretty sure Adam got it, but I did not get it. I never followed KISS and the role of gay culture and gay men in forming the identity of KISS was not known by most fans -- with the exception of some superfans knowing their manager, Bill Aucoin, was gay. >> After I read it, 40 years after KISS was founded, and I look at KISS, well duh! [Hits head!] It was right in front of me the whole time. We do know why KISS was on Idol. It was the kickoff of KISS' promotion of their 2009 35th Anniversary World Tour -- which was their first tour since 2004. The only AI 8 finalist who could sing with KISS was Adam. Beyond that, I really doubt that Idol put Adam with KISS because the band was conceived of and styled by gay men. ETA: In a weird coincidence Queen's first real manager (Jim Reid 1975-1978) and KISS manager were both gay. Jim Reid was replaced by Jim Beach in 1978 and is still their manager and an essential part of the Mercury Trust; Jim Reid went on to be Elton John's manager for 28 years. ya, there was an interview where Adam spoke about getting the boots from his closet ( not to be outdone by KISS outfits) and the wings from Mz. Alanna (sp?), and then there was an interview with the AI stylist who revealed they made the sleeves out of leggings and adam wanted them gold, but the stylist advised him against it, saying it would be "too much"... something was said about the body of the jacket, but I don't remember what....

I'm not convinced Queen put out an offer right after Idol. IMO it was more along the lines of "lets do something, sometime...later". I think Gene was making a moot point. It seems, the path Adam has taken has made him more confident and a substantially better performer than 5 years ago. Now he is ready for Queen, I don't think the stars aligned quite right until now. Based on what Brian and Roger said, there was no discussion between Queen and Adam in 2009, but there was interest. I remember an interview from 2009 or 2010 where Brian said that he thought it was important for Adam to establish is own career and it was not fair for Adam to be tied up with a band that was made up of old guys. If anyone remembers this, I really would love a copy or link to this interview. Ah! wouldn't surprise me. They are smart guys.

First of all I can't really see how the concerts like FS or GNT had anything to do with public opinion at large that jomama is talking about. These are concerts for fans, not to mention that the GNT "antics" were his reaction to fans LOVING them. The more public went crazy the more he went for it. He is on stage to PLEASE US - he said it many times... Now, "massive make up" - this confuses me.. He shouldn't have been himself trough out the AI run? That would've been tragic IMO, but again, I don't really understand you here... jomama, Adam explained he felt he had to "upstage" previous performers, including the well accepted Gaga's smashing of Whiskey(?) bottles over her piano (THAT was OK for children to see of course). He came up with that kiss! It was f*ing BEAUTIFUL!!!! "international star": actually the world wide round of news coverage was caused not so much by the performance but by the US media REACTION to it, the GMA cancellation, etc... The way it was covered was mostly in a way of "look at the backwards US media...". But whatever the reason it did put Adam's name on the huge international stage...thank god! in any case, I think Adam got himself written into the music history books, social change history books, American culture history books....IMO it was a stroke of genius - in the long term especially... haha... I see us talking about the AMAs ten years from now...saying the same words... I specifically asked to PLEASE not be taken out of context. I clearly was addressing the comment that the GAY GAY GAY thing was all the media's doing and I then gave examples of it being Adam's choice to put the GAY forward...... re the "massive makeup"...really?...sparkle glitter, bindi's to the max are pretty 'massive' by most people's standards and you would be hard pressed to find a straight man today that would wear that unless he was acting the part of a gay or trans or drag person...or ridiculing/mocking as female....it just is not your average straight appearance. Surely that is not a challenging statement. I love the massive makeup. I think he looked gorgeous at Fantasy Springs 1....but he sure did not look straight...lol, and he knew it. He was putting it front and forward and to those that do not like that, it would feel like rubbing it in their faces. But hey...when I see a guy covered in grime, with a baseball hat and facial scruff, climb out of a huge pickup riding 4 feet off the ground on giant tires, I am almost nauseated at the flagrant display of testosterone....may turn some on but gives me the heebie jeebies lol....to each his or her own....but the macho guy knows what he is doing, and so did/does Adam. sorry, mszue, I think you and I have a bit of a difference in defining the context in this case...so, let me try and explain: IMO jomama was talking about Adam "pushing the gay" into the faces of conservative America and the effect of the AMA performance on the said masses... You agreed and brought up the FS and GNT performances as an example - I don't really see what it has to do with the "masses", as IMO unless you went to the concert you saw and knew nothing... Then you said "makeup" and you explained it above. I still don't see it. May be because in my life (mostly Manhattan) I don't see men wearing make up at all, either gay or not (I do see trans folks from time to time), UNLESS they are on stage or on TV (I live by the ABC studios and see some of the male anchors outside on a break - they usually have tons of foundation on)... So, for me Adam wearing make up was an ACTOR THING, both when he was on stage or giving interviews...Yes, he had massive make up during some AI eps, but that was STAGE stuff... The GAY was brought up by the media after the kissing photo surfaced right before the B&W performance. Papa Bear (Bill O'Reily) was all over it.... That was the beginning. As much as Adam tried to stay away from the issue he really could not. The bottom line is I just don't see Adam rubbing anything into anyone's face... I love massive make up as well! Your whole last paragraph is AWESOME! I can't express it any better!

Adam discussed the KISS outfit with Slezak in the Idolatry Interview. At the end of part 3 they discuss the jacket and early in part 5 they discuss the boots. www.mjsbigblog.com/adam-lambert-idolatry-interview.htm

From what I have heard, just a very rich person paying Adam his fee for a private party performance. And since that event planner said it is a 1/2 million $$ party, I imagine Adam is getting paid well.
