Remember how Kara said she wasn't "feeling" it? I personally think that Adam actually learned from that, but in my mind, Adam strives to "feel" every single song he songs, tries to get into a place where the lyrics are entirely organic to the music and the feeling he creates for the audience. To me it is part of his magic, the ability to let me feel what he feels, just with his voice.
Of course, we know now that Adam is theatrical when he wants to be and we recognize that as one of his strengths, but I think he was quite subdued in his early Idol appearances and if he'd left "Wicked" off his Idol sign-up sheet I really believe that we would have heard very different comments from the judges at the beginning when they were still getting to know Adam. They focused in on the musical theater angle and didn't try to see past it. Later in the competition they had seen enough of his talent to completely forget about that particular "drawback."
> Adam is truly theatrical. He has learned how to modulate that and use it now. When he was on Idol, he was still working that out. The production of "Feeling Good", for example, was probably not needed. It would have been better to have the audience just hear him sing -- because his vocal performance was the big show.
> I would never call Adam's early performances on Idol subdued.
Audition: Bohemian Rhapsody
Semi-Final Group 2: Satisfaction (fully Adamized)
Top 13: Black and White
Top 11: Ring of Fire
His first subdued performance was on the Top 10 -- Tracks of My Tears.
I think Kara was right about Adam going to that musical theater style of singing occasionally in his early performances on Idol -- it is a different style of singing vs. contemporary pop-rock.
And Adam agreed...he is his first solo on Idol. Satisfaction. Adam talks about the adjustment he has to make in the intro...
But compare this to what he does now -- this is great but not even close to how he has learned to use his voice and communicate through music now.

And on the audition, Simon was talking about singing style not appearance -- although to comment about someone being "theatrical" when they had just sand "Bohemian Rhapsody" is like a DUH!
Adam mentioned in an interview that he focused on his musical theater background and maybe that was a mistake. JMHO I do not think he would be advantaged by focusing on being a frontman for Citizen Vein, or by mentioning Zodiac Club, or his dance pop songs. And he needed a simple story. The best one would have been, he wanted to be a pop-rock artist and was doing musical theater to pay the bills. Simple and easy for the Idol audience to understand.
Simon's comments on Satisfaction are interesting -- and Randy really nailed it. If you haven't watched that Satisfaction performance for a while with the intro and comments it is worth a watch. I love that performance but he has gone so far beyond it. Can you imaging what Adam would do with Satisfaction now?!? Think about it. We would all be dead!
