The 2014 "Part-of-the-World" Queen + Adam Lambert Tour Countdown!
4.18.14 by Q3
The countdown moves on and the start of this epic tour gets closer. Only 62 days to go!
Japan single, July 1982 (Could they look less happy?)
#62 Staying Power(1982)
Written by Freddie Mercury.
Released on Hot Space in May 3, 1982, released as a single in Japan July 1982 and the US in November 1982.
Mark this song down because there is no chance it will be played in the upcoming tour. None! Brian and Roger were not in favor of the band’s adventures with funk music – and Queen fans were definitely not supportive. But this is one of the dance-oriented tracks from Hot Space that fall into Adam’s wheelhouse. Adam lists both Freddie and Michael Jackson as major influences. And this song clearly was influenced by Freddie and John Deacon’s work with Michael Jackson. And to a lesser extent by John Deacon’s work with Bernard Edwards of Chic.
"Staying Power" is the first track on the first side of Queen's 1982 album Hot Space. It was written by lead singer Freddie Mercury and is notable as being the only Queen song to include a horn section. . In a Stylus Magazine review of the album, critic Anthony Miccio described the song's style as: "an electro-disco track with frenetic horns." The original demo of the track featured a guitar instead of horns.
It was released as a single in Japan and the US but failed to chart in either country.
Personnel
The song is driven by a funk-styled synth-bass riff (played by Mercury on an Oberheim OB-X) beginning in D minor and modulating to E minor throughout the song. John Deacon does not play bass on this song—instead playing rhythm guitar on a Fender Telecaster. Roger Taylor programmed a Linn LM-1 drum machine for the track. Brian May of course is on his Red Special. The horn arrangement for "Staying Power" was performed by Arif Mardin (who also produced Chaka Khan and added horn sections to Bee Gees and Aretha Franklin records).
Musicians:
Freddie Mercury - lead and backing vocals, synthesizer, drum machine, synth bass
Brian May - rhythm guitar
John Deacon - rhythm guitar
Roger Taylor - electronic drums
Arif Marden - "hot and spacey" horns
Produced by: Queen and Mack (horns produced by Arif Mardin)

“Staying Power” Live
"Staying Power" was performed on the Hot Space Tour, and at some concert on The Works Tour. The live version of Staying Power was faster and heavier, and had slightly different instrumentation than the album version. Morgan Fisher took over the keyboard parts and replaced the Oberheim with the Roland Jupiter 8. Roger Taylor replaced the drum machine with acoustic drums. It was also the only would be the only song played live in which Deacon played rhythm guitar, as the bass was done via keyboard. With the electronics scaled back on the live version, the song is transformed into a funk rock song—rather than a disco-influenced rock song that stays strong to its disco influences. The live version can be found on Queen Greatest Video Hits 2 DVD, Queen On Fire: Live At The Bowl album and DVD and on the Hot Space 2011 deluxe CD album.
Staying Power - Live at The Bowl - June 5, 1982
This performance had an interesting intro by Freddie.
When the Hot Space album was released, Queen’s rock-oriented fans did not like the music. Freddie addressed this issue when he introduced this song.
''Now, most of you know that we've got a, some new sounds out in the last week, and, ah, for what it's worth, um, we're gonna do a few songs in the ah funk/black category, whatever you call it. That doesn't mean we've lost our rock 'n' roll feel, OK? I mean, it's only a bloody record, people get so excited about these things, I mean um, we just wanna try out a few sounds, this is 'Staying Power'.''
Freddie Mercury June 5, 1982
Let me show it to you yeah
See what I got - I got a hell of a lot
Tell me what you feel
Is it real is it real?
You know I got what it takes
And I can take a lot
Did you hear the last call baby?
You and me got staying power yeah!
You and me we got staying power
Staying power (I got it I got it)
I wonder when we're gonna make it
I wonder when we're gonna shake it
Rock me baby rock me
C'mon you can shock me
Let's catch on to the groove
Make it move make it move
You know how to shake that thing
We'll work it work it work it
You and I can play ball baby
You and me got staying power yeah
You and me we got staying power
I wonder when we're gonna make it
I wonder when we're gonna shake it
Fire down below I'm just a regular dynamo
Want some smooth company
Don't lose control just hang on out with me
Got to get to know each other
But we got plenty of time
Did you hear the last call baby?
You and me got staying power yeah
You and me we got staying power
Power power power...
I wonder when we're gonna stick it
I wonder when we're gonna trick it
Blow baby blow let's get down and go go
Get yourself in the mood
Got to give a little bit of attitude
Baby don't you crash
Let just trash trash trash
Did you hear the last call baby?
You and me got staying power yeah
You and me we got staying power
(I like it) Staying power
Yeah yeah
Gotcha
Proof that Adam Could Slay with the Song
First, he made it clear who two of his main influences are -- his audition songs were covers of Michael Jackson and Queen.
