TALON'S TAKE
Lazing On A Sunday AfternoonWritten by: Freddie Mercury
Musicians:
Freddie Mercury - lead and backing vocals, piano
Brian May - guitars
John Deacon - bass guitar
Roger Taylor - drums
- HA! This song just always makes me smile. Quite the little interlude.
- The vocal effect is that they put a pair of headphones in a metal can like a trash can. Freddie sang in a different room through a microphone and his voice went into the headphones which was surrounded by the metal can and the recorder captured the result! Experimentation before computers could do it all
- Played live during 1975 and 76 but then dropped.
QUOTES:
- "That's the way the mood takes me. Y'know... that's just one aspect of me, and I can really change. Everything on
Sunday Afternoon is something that... I'm really, I'm really sort of, I really... well, I love doing the vaudeville side of things. It's quite a sort of test... I love writing things like that and I'm sure I'm going to do more than that... It's quite a challenge." - Freddie Mercury - 1976 - Record Mirror.
ALTERNATIVE RELEASED VERSIONS:
1991 WITHDRAWN PROMO VERSION- NOT essential listening. This is seriously a game of spot the difference? Probably not. I'll give it away though...at about :51 they omit a backing vocal line.
UNRELEASED LIVE VERSIONS:
LIVE IN HIMEJI - MARCH 1976- AUDIO only as I don't think a video exists of this song live...
-Freddie was a bit in rough vocal shape this concert, but he doesn't do bad on this song
ALTERNATIVE RELEASED VERSIONS:
QUEEN EXTRAVAGANZA - LIVE IN PHILADELPHIA- Marc Martel may be a bit of...the other guy in AL fandom, but I saw QE and they put on a helluva show! I think it's okay to like both! I don't usually put too many covers but I liked this one quite a bit!

THE MAKING OF LAZING ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOONPERSONAL NOTES:
- FUN! That's all there is to it! Fun but also extremely well crafted fun.

SUPPLEMENTAL:
Ok Q3 took it easy, today I'm going to go a bit more difficult. So far I've been able to pull all my material from my Queen thread. Today I'm choosing a song that has 3 entries...one from 2003, one from 2008 and one I haven't even written yet from 2013. SO new material today! A preview of sorts
Say It's Not TrueOriginally from the 46664 gigs in 2003, re-recorded by Queen + Paul Rodgers for The Cosmos Rocks in 2008 and re-recorded by Roger Taylor (and Jeff Beck) for Roger's album Fun On Earth in 2013.
Written by: Roger Taylor
Musicians for 2003 (Unknown but a good guess)
Roger Taylor - vocals, percussion
Brian May - guitar
Dave Stewart - guitar
Musicians for 2008:
Roger Taylor - vocals (1st verse and choruses), drums, keyboards (?), bass guitar (?)
Brian May - vocals (2nd verse and choruses), guitars, bass guitar (?)
Paul Rodgers - vocals (final chorus)
Musicians for 2013:
Roger Taylor - vocals
Jeff Beck - guitar
Rufus Tiger Taylor - drums
Steve Stroud - bass
Spike Edney - keyboards
2003 STUDIO - NO YT VID -- because the original studio recording has NEVER surfaced.
- Ok. This track makes it's first appearance. It was definitely recorded during the 46664 demos stage but this particular recording never surfaced.
- It was played at the 46664 concert below as an in between set number by as Bob Geldof introduced them the Fun Bad Three (Brian, Roger, and Dave Stewart).
- This song later was performed by Roger during the Queen + Paul Rodgers tour including the New Jersey show I went to in 2005, Queen's first appearance in the US since 1982. Roger's quote just before he sang it? "Fuck me, it's good to be back...in America"
- Even further later on, the song was re-recorded by Queen + Paul Rodgers for their studio album in a much different way and was performed on the 2008 tour in that fashion but we will cross that bridge when we get there.
- STILL further on it would be re-recorded by Roger for his 2013 Fun On Earth album in a rehearsal space with legendary guitarist Jeff Beck playing along and Rufus Taylor on drums. BUT again, we will cross that bridge when we get there.
2003 LIVE DEBUT2005 - QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS2005 - Roger Taylor + Band Du LacPERSONAL NOTES: This song is Roger's Too Much Love Will Kill You. A song brought out and recorded many different ways over the years. A nice anti-AIDS song, that while sad still is beautiful. Roger's voice suits it best.
2008
- Issued as a free download-only single for World AIDS Day (and thus not chartable and then later physically without a B-Side in December 2007 in the UK (where it hit #90).
- Older version performed during the 2005-2006 tour, new version performed through 2008, with live versions of the old on the 46664 Concert, Return Of The Champions, and 2005 Official Downloads, as well as a live version of the new way on Live In Ukraine and 2008 Official Downloads.
- Originally written by Roger for 46664 efforts, but rearranged with three lead vocals and a much heavier ending.
- Later on re-recorded again by Roger for his solo album 2013's Fun On Earth
QUOTE
Can you tell us about other songs [on the new album]?
"We've also re-recorded 'Say It's Not True', the one we did as a free download for Nelson Mandela [and his World AIDS Day in 2007], but it now has all three of us singing the verses, and it gets massively heavy at the end." - Roger Taylor - 2008 - Classic Rock Magazine
OFFICIAL RELEASED LIVE VERSION
LIVE IN KHARKOVUNOFFICIAL LIVE VERSION
LIVE IN CHILE 2008PERSONAL NOTES:
This is an awesome version of the track. I love trading off three vocalists. Live it works even better, starting out with simply Roger on vocals/drums, joined by Brian, and then by Paul. Beautiful sentimental song.
2013
- Roger has long been calling Jeff Beck his favorite guitarist (along with Brian of course he usually adds). The two have been friends for awhile and began performing together sporadically. On one such occasion Jeff asked to do this song and so they did it in a way that is closer to the original than the QPR version and very well crafted.
- This version is actually taken from a rehearsal they did before a live performance of the show - so it really is a live take. I'm sure it was taken to a studio and cleaned up afterwards a bit but for the most part it is a live take.
LIVE AT WINTERSHALL - 2011- Hell it might have been recorded rehearsing for this!
PERSONAL NOTES: It is different enough to be unique and quite a listen. Jeff is a phenomenal feeling guitarist and his lead adds something different to the track than Brian's lead. Equally as good! A nice addition to the 2013 album.
CHANCES:
Say It's Not True......50% -- Roger seems to love this song and did it all throughout 2005-2008 in different ways. I would hardly be shocked to see it be one of Rog's tunes this summer although to be fair he did drop it for a bit during the 2006 NA tour. If we do see it I would bet it's closer to the original than the QPR version, but perhaps they do get Adam involved and do the heavier way.
