Hump Day With Adam Lambert: Golden Anniversary
by snicks | May 21, 2014
On this week’s Hump Day with Adam Lambert, we celebrate an historic anniversary.
Once again Adam was MIA on social media this week (although he did go grocery shopping). I think I know why! He’s obviously saving up all his energy for the Queen tour!
But we do have something to celebrate. Two years ago this week Adam released his history-making album Trespassing
To celebrate this Golden Anniversary (Yes, I know, two years is not gold, but it sounds better than “Cotton Anniversary”), let’s take a look back and pick our favorite song. Is your favorite still the same two years later? Have any of them lost their luster, or shining more brightly than ever?
To get the ball rolling, I’m going to go back to my original review, and review my reviews of each song.
1. “TRESPASSING”
ORIGINAL REVIEW – “No trespassing? Yeah, my ass! Wait till ya get a load of me!” Adam wisely places this funky foot stomper first, and declares from the outset that he’s not going to conform to expectations. This ode to individuality is filled with sass, and the beat and in-your-face attitude are reminiscent of the Queen classic “Another One Bites The Dust.”
TWO YEARS LATER – Yep, it’s still a standout on the album, and still a standout in concert.
2. “CUCKOO”
ORIGINAL REVIEW – “Walk that walk like you don’t give a f*ck.” One of the most high-energy, beat-driven songs on the album, there’s no way you can’t flash back to the 80′s while listening, thankfully.
TWO YEARS LATER – I loved it two years ago, and I think it’s now my co-favorite on the album.

3. “SHADY”
ORIGINAL REVIEW – “No I ain’t broken, but I, I need a fix.” With a bass so dirty it deserves a tongue bath, Adam declares that hunting season is open … but it ain’t a rabbit hole he’s looking for.
TWO YEARS LATER – My other co-favorite on the album, it’s become a concert staple.
4. “NEVER CLOSE OUR EYES”
ORIGINAL REVIEW – “There’s plenty of time to sleep when we die.” I’m still trying to figure out why one of the weakest songs on the album was chosen as one of the first singles. Originally a Bruno Mars demo, it has the distinction of being both overproduced … and undercooked.
TWO YEARS LATER – Perhaps i was a bit harsh, but I still don’t think it should’ve been the first single.
5. “KICKIN IN”
ORIGINAL REVIEW – “He got words that rhyme, he got a dirty mind.” In fact, this track harkens back to the Prince classic “Dirty Mind.” It’s also one of the most irresistible songs on the album, with its story of … liquid euphoria.
TWO YEARS LATER – I’m surprised this hasn’t gotten more traction in the last two years.
6. “NAKED LOVE”
ORIGINAL REVIEW – “I want your naked love, so dontcha dress it up tonight.” Straightforward pop gem that wisely eschews production flourishes and just gives us Adam … wanting to know you better.
TWO YEARS LATER – One of those songs that sounds even better two years later. Yes, I’ve put it on and cranked it up in the car.

7. “POP THAT LOCK”
ORIGINAL REVIEW – “If you got the key, then baby pop that lock” Standard dance track that will earn its place in concert when throngs of Glamberts chant in unison, “Werk Bitch!”
TWO YEARS LATER – Okay, so many of you have shouted “Werk Bitch?”
8. “BETTER THAN I KNOW MYSELF”
ORIGINAL REVIEW – “I can be obnoxious at times, but try and see my heart.” Released as the first single, it had a disappointing chart result, and has polarized fans. I love the song, and will continue to defend it. Like “Naked Love,” it’s a perfect showcase for the plaintive Adam, and makes tremendous use of his vocal range.
TWO YEARS LATER – I stand by my assessment even in the face of universal derision.
9. “BROKEN ENGLISH”
ORIGINAL REVIEW – “Now your body language is broken English.” Gloriously bombastic ballad that has producers reaching into their trick bags for electronic eccentricities. It somehow comes together.
TWO YEARS LATER – Hell yes, it still causes goosebumps

10. “UNDERNEATH”
ORIGINAL REVIEW – “Strip away the flesh and the bone” The best song on the album. Adam bares it all … his heart … his soul … and his passion. It’s impossible not be moved when he begs “Look at me!”
TWO YEARS LATER – Another one that hasn’t received nearly enough notice in the last two years.
11. “CHOKEHOLD”
ORIGINAL REVIEW – “I want your chokehold” Atmospheric but standard ballad about a strained and smothering relationship. Not a bad song, but one of the lesser entries on the album.
TWO YEARS LATER – What the hell was I thinking?
12. “OUTLAWS OF LOVE”
ORIGINAL REVIEW – “They’ve branded us outlaws of love.” If it’s not the best song on the album, it’s certainly the most important. Quieter Adam is always goosebump-inducing, and this plea for equality is heartbreaking in its sincerity.
TWO YEARS LATER – It’s still a high point on the album, and just as important.
Adam Performance Of The Week
13. “RUNNIN”
ORIGINAL REVIEW – “I’ve been standing here my whole life. Everything I’ve seen twice.” Like “Chokehold,” it’s a serviceable power ballad, but suffers in comparison to the rest of the album
TWO YEARS LATER – Another one I may been too harsh with, he’s made it work in concert. (*Updated – I’ve been informed that Adam has never performed this in concert, but I have vivid memories of him belting this out live. Maybe we see what we want to see)
14. “TAKE BACK”
ORIGINAL REVIEW – “How do we take back what’s been done, what’s been said?” An urgent lament about a failing relationship, it’s taken to a new level by Adam’s strong vocal plea.
TWO YEARS LATER – It remains one of the buried treasures of this album
15. “NIRVANA”
ORIGINAL REVIEW – “We can escape to a higher plane” The album ends on a strong note, with this dreamy ballad. Adam wisely chose to finish with a song about hope and finding a place in the world. It’s bittersweet and affecting.
TWO YEARS LATER – And yes, it’s still just as affecting. Hopefully Adam will find Nirvana with his new label.
Okay, your turn! What do you think of Trespassing two years later?

Written by Brian May.
Released on The Game on June 30, 1980.
"Sail Away Sweet Sister (To The Sister I Never Had)" was written by May and features him on lead vocals. The bridge was sung by Mercury. The song was recorded in June/July 1979, "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", "Coming Soon" and "Save Me" were recorded in 1979. The other songs on the album were recorded in February - May 1980. "Sail Away Sweet Sister" has never be performed live with Queen, but has been with Guns N' Roses.
Brian and Roger have promised something new. Well I have a suggestion -- pull this one off the shelf.

Sail Away Sweet Sister
Hey little babe you're changing
Babe are you feeling sore?
It ain't no use in pretending
You don't wanna play no more
It's plain that you ain't no baby
What would your mother say?
You're all dressed up like a lady
How come you behave this way?
Sail away sweet sister
Sail across the sea
Maybe you'll find somebody
To love you half as much as me
My heart is always with you
No matter what you do
Sail away sweet sister
I'll always be in love with you
Forgive me for what I told you
My heart makes a fool of me
You know that I'll never hold you
I know that you gotta be free
Sail away sweet sister
Sail across the sea
Maybe you'll find somebody
To love you half as much as me
Take it the way you want it
But when they let you down my friend
Sail away sweet sister
Back to my arms again
Hot child don't you know you're young
You got your whole life ahead of you?
And you can throw it away too soon
Way too soon
Sail away sweet sister
Sail across the sea
Maybe you'll find somebody's
Gonna love you half as much as me
My heart is always with you
No matter what you do
Sail away sweet sister
I'll always be in love with you
The Axl Rose cover
CAUTION: This starts out like a ballad and then Axl switched to a thrash-metal vocal. It is intentionally jarring. Many of you will hate it.
