Queen And Adam Lambert At iHeartRadio Theater

By Steve Baltin
Los Angeles
During a video interview that aired prior to Queen And Adam Lambert's performance at the iHeartRadio Theater in Burbank, Calif., on June 16, Queen guitarist Brian May stated what seemed obvious. "For us it was all over when Freddie [Mercury died], we never thought we'd be playing The Forum and Madison Square Garden again."
Pink Floyd, Alice In Chains and, perhaps most famously, AC/DC, who lost lead singer Bon Scott in 1980 and replaced him with Brian Johnson and went onto even greater success, are just a few of the bands who have shown that the show must go on, literally. But the thought of Queen going on without the charismatic and once-in-a-lifetime talent of Mercury is different (though the group did tour in the past with Paul Rodgers, another all-time great, but one who had a markedly different vocal style and stage presence than Mercury). In polls debating the greatest frontmen in rock history, Mercury is deservedly near the top alongside the likes of Robert Plant, Steven Tyler and Mick Jagger. Personal preferences aside, there is no denying Mercury belongs in the conversation. That's what makes this current Queen and Lambert pairing even more shockingly impressive.
The teaming made their full national debut at last year's iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas, delivering arguably the best performance of the weekend. Last night, appearing only three days before the proper kickoff of their forthcoming tour in Chicago, the pairing made clear their much ballyhooed Vegas appearance was legit.
The taut eight-song set opened with "We Will Rock You," an obvious choice that fired up the audience, getting them to wave their fists and sing along to the familiar refrain. Lambert then asked the crowd if they were ready to get funky as the group kicked into "Another One Bites The Dust." The show went to the next level with "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," during which May delivered two solos that electrified the crowd.
Lambert introduced the next song by saying it would be something new for Queen. Indeed, the group tackled "Love Kills," a 1984 Mercury solo song he worked on with iconic GRAMMY-winning producer Giorgio Moroder for a restored version of the film Metropolis. Lambert said it was a disco song without the disco done "Queen style," and while most of the song was done as a sweet ballad, with Lambert and May seated on stools, the song did feature a disco kick near the end, taking on a contemporary remix feel.
The energy surged back up for an aggressive "Fat Bottomed Girls," the most rocking song of the night, which Lambert dedicated to all the "fat-a**ed b****es out there."
So much of the reason why this incarnation of Queen is exciting is Lambert, whose confidence and theatricality fit like a glove. While his admiration of Mercury is clear to see, he is wisely not trying to replace an irreplaceable legend. Of course, May and drummer Roger Taylor remain two of rock's finest at their respective instruments and they propel this version of Queen to lofty standards. That pedigree came through especially on the rock grandeur of "Fat Bottomed Girls," but also on the musically bipolar "Under Pressure," Queen's classic duet with David Bowie, which excelled with Taylor handling many of the vocals.
Following a spirited rendition of "We Are The Champions," done on this night without its pairing with "We Will Rock You," the night wrapped with "Don't Stop Me Now" from 1978's Jazz. The perfect vehicle for Lambert's vocal range, the trademark Queen song was the unquestioned highpoint of the set.
In an interview with Rolling Stone in March, May said that this teaming with Lambert "is the closest that you'll ever get to see Queen as it was in our golden days, but it's not a reproduction." That's exactly why this pairing works. It is an iconic band sharing their legend with a frontman who understands and appreciates their legacy. And the results are a joy for anyone who loves Queen.
Set List:
"We Will Rock You"
"Another One Bites The Dust"
"Crazy Little Thing Called Love"
"Love Kills"
"Fat Bottomed Girls"
"Under Pressure"
"We Are The Champions"
"Don't Stop Me Now"

Oh, mama mia! Adam Lambert and Queen's Brian May are too fierce during a performance at the iHeartRadio Theater on June 16 in Burbank, Calif.
If You Missed Adam Lambert’s And Queen’s iheartradio Live Performance You’re Missing Life
Lucky for you, we've compiled the most royal Adam Lambert photo from his Queen concert.

I’m sorry. Did I just hear you just say you missed Adam Lambert and Queen performing together during their iheartradio show and Q&A session last night in L.A.?! Adam and I have decided you’re permanently out of the Glambert club and you can’t sit with us. Bye forever. Don’t call. Just kidding! I WOULD NEVER.
Well, you can just wipe those smudged eyeliner tears off those sweet cheeks, because the Internet is a very magical place that at least offers photos of the epic event. As in many new photos of Adam Lambert (and Queen guitarist Brian May) for you to add to your Glambert shrine. Like ones where he’s serving so many beautiful angles with those perfect cheekbones and perfect-everything else and ones that give me thoughts I should keep to myself.
But just in case you’re a masochist and want to hear what you missed that these photos just can’t say in any of their 1,000 words, you should know that Adam’s flawless falsetto NAILED Queen’s classic hits like “Another One Bites The Dust,” “Fat Bottomed Girls,” “Under Pressure,” and the Queen class, “We Are The Champions.”
The guys even gave a little taste of a heart-wrenching homage to a lesser-known Freddie Mercury hit penned for the film “Metropolis” called “Love Kills.” And Adam also slayed “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” Because he always slays. Oh, did I forget to mention he looked into your soul while he sang it?
Adam’s warm-up show with Queen was the perfect sneak peek at what to expect during their 19-date tour this summer, which kicks off June 19 in Chicago.
Enjoy even more flawless photos of the King of Glam giving so much neck porn/smize/LUSTFUL GAZES on his iheartradio show with Queen:
Adam proves he’s flexible, and lo, it is heavenly:
Adam catches sight of himself in a mirror and realizes his awesome beauty:
Adam pauses to admire Brian May’s skills… and hair:
Don’t… ever… change, bb!
What’s that smell? Just our undying adoration.
Smize king.

11 Ways Queen Has Changed Since They Last Played Madison Square Garden
Queen + Adam Lambert start a 24-date North America tour — including their first stop at MSG since 1982 — Thursday in Chicago. posted on June 17, 2014, at 7:59 p.m.

The tour will be the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers’ first stop at New York City’s Madison Square Garden since 1982, and BuzzFeed was there to get a first look at how the band has changed in the intervening 32 years.
1. Freddie Mercury and John Deacon are no longer in the band.

The legendary frontman passed away in 1991, while the bassist retired in 1997.
2. Adam Lambert now handles vocals for the band.

The runner-up on Season 8 of American Idol is a star in his own right, as his solo album, Tresspassing, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album charts. Brian May and Roger Taylor first performed with Lambert on the American Idol finale, backing him on the Queen classic “We Are the Champions.”
“We didn’t look for Adam, we just found him,” May said in a Q&A before their performance on Monday night. “Saw him on the Idol finale and it was a natural thing from there. His voice is so incredible.”
3. Brian May’s iconic black locks are now gray.
Getty Images for iHeartRadio
Never mind the man’s hair, though, as he shreds every bit as much as he ever did. Watching May play the iconic riffs he wrote for anthems like “We Will Rock You” and “Another One Bites The Dust” live and in person was the stuff of bucket lists.
4. Roger Taylor is cooler than ever.
Getty Images for iHeartRadio
Taylor wore shades for much of the concert, which somehow made the highly influential drummer (and co-writer of the No. 1 hit “Under Pressure”) even more badass than normal.
5. Fans held up their phones from the first note to the last.
BuzzFeed.com
This is a lot different from the sea of ligthers that greeted the band back in ‘82. Overall, the crowd was an even mix of young fans and fans from back in the day.
6. The band shocked fans by performing Freddie Mercury’s song “Love Kills,” from the Metropolis soundtrack.
Columbia Records
The cult favorite was never performed live during Freddie Mercury’s lifetime, but May and Rogers (who played on the original track), made a new arrangement of it for this tour. “We’re going to do it our way,” May said. “Without the disco.”
7. The band also announced the tour will feature performances of “The Show Must Go On.”
Getty Images for iHeartRadio
This is another classic track the band never performed with Freddy Mercury.
8. The band’s logo is now gold instead of the traditional silver.
Getty Images for iHeartRadio
The minor change was at the suggestion of Lambert, who explained that he woke up from a dream and was like, “I think it needs more gold. What if instead of the industrial iron and steel look, we went with more gold!”
9. During “Fat Bottomed Girls,” Lambert shouted, “All you fat ass bitches are gonna get on your bikes and ride!”
Getty Images for iHeartRadio
This was an update of Mercury’s famous direction in the original song to “Get on your bikes and ride!”
10. The songs were unmistakable, but bristled with modern energy.
Getty Images for iHeartRadio
The drums on We Will Rock You had a slightly different groove, and May was fearless in adding small but ingenious embellishments to his classic riffs. This adventurous spirit was especially on display when they stretched songs like “Don’t Stop Me Now” into extended jams.
11. Queen is more of a hard rock band than ever before.
Kevin Winter / Via Getty Images Entertainment
May said their upcoming tour will feature quite a few songs from the band’s early days when they were a heavy rock band. This emphasis on rock was no more evident than on “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” when May crossed the stage to urge the keyboardist on in pounding out the chords as he solo’d like a madman.

Queen + Adam Lambert’s iHeart Radio show proved they’ve rediscovered their killer instincts
Love Kills was a definitive shift in the evolution of Queen
Posted 17th June 2014 in Features & Reviews, Queen | By Paul Leake
The news that Queen would be touring with Adam Lambert this summer raised some eyebrows among Queen purists. They've collaborated before on a handful of gigs, but nothing on the scale of what they're about to do this summer. As a result, some people questioned whether the pairing would be able to capture the magic in huge stadiums and bring the Queen back catalogue to life. But if the iHeart Radio show proved anything, it's that Adam brings something they never had with Paul Rodgers: crackling chemistry.
Paul was fine as a frontman, but he was really just a singer for hire. He never brought life to the songs Brian, Roger, Freddie and John had crafted together. And those songs were undeniable full of life, even when the band was facing the finality of Freddie's last few months. They pulsed with a vitality that made them unique; they were burning up with the intense emotions and hunger of each member. The spark was missing when they toured with Paul and most people were there just to see Brian and Roger perform the hell out of those songs.
Adam is different. He's an incredible singer with a charismatic presence on stage and he's managed to form a strong friendship with Brian and Roger along the way. That friendship has a real spark to it that promises to light up stages across North America this summer. Their surprise performance of 'Love Kills' last night – a song from Freddie's solo back catalogue – crackled with originality and managed to pay tribute to one of music's all-time greats by doing it differently. It marked a shift in the evolution of Queen.
For the first time in a long time, it feels like Queen really are back, regenerated into something distinct and exciting. And fans should be excited because Adam has helped Brian and Roger rediscover the spark that defined the band before Freddie's death. He's helped them become 'Killer Queen' all over again.

Setlist Rumor
6.18.14 by Q3
Not much information has come out of the rehearsals, but there is one rumor that I have gotten from good sources, and is completely consistent with what Brian and Roger have said in interviews and at the Concert Preview. It also makes promotional sense.
>> This is a rumor. Please do not throw things at me if it is not true!!
Fact: Brian said they will be doing songs from their early albums.
Fact: Queen is releasing “Queen: Live at The Rainbow” an official release of the 1974 live recordings. (See entire press release below.)
RUMOR: The upcoming tour set will include some songs (one source says 2 new songs from Queen or Queen II) that were performed at the Rainbow ’74 concerts.
The 15 Queen songs from March and November Rainbow 1974 concerts that have never appeared on any official Queen live album before (this excludes video) are good bets -- here they are:
- Procession
- Father to Son
- Ogre Battle
- Son and Daughter
- White Queen
- Great King Rat
- The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke
- Modern Times Rock'n'Roll
- Liar
- See What A Fool I've Been
- Flick of the Wrist
- In the Lap of the Gods (not to be confused with In The Lap Of The Gods... Revisited)
- The March of the Black Queen
- Bring Back that Leroy Brown
- Stone Cold Crazy.
The press announcement
QUEEN TO RELEASE RARE RECORDING OF LANDMARK CONCERT
QUEEN: LIVE AT THE RAINBOW ’74
Previously unreleased first live album finally surfaces after 40 year wait.
Sunday 31st March 1974 is a landmark date in the history of rock music. It is now celebrated in the multi format release of a rare recording made at legendary London venue The Rainbow, of a concert by a then up-and-coming band called Queen. Few who turned up for that iconic performance could have predicted they would go on to become arguably the world’s best and most successful rock group, although many more may have suspected it after this stunning show.
Among the unique material contained in this release are over a dozen tracks never previously released on any official Queen live album. The release will come in CD, Vinyl and standard DVD or SD Blu-Ray formats available as standard releases or special limited edition sets as well as digital formats.
That concert, being heard live for the first time in the soon to be released Queen: Live at the Rainbow ’74, marked the culmination of the band’s countrywide tour, their first as headliners - hot on the heels of a tour supporting Mott the Hoople, late in 1973, on which they were widely regarded as having blown the hit band off the stage. Queen got rave reviews, almost unheard of for a support band, and it was obvious that in future they would be top of the bill. The band’s momentum had been building since the release of their eponymous album in July 1973 and, following their success on the Mott tour, at the beginning of 1974 they were tipped as Band of the Year in UK music paper Disc and Music Echo.
Just before the March Rainbow gig, Queen performed their new single Seven Seas of Rhye on must-see UK TV music show Top of the Pops. The highly coveted slot was a lucky break - they filled in for an absent David Bowie, who was unavailable - and the band made the most of it, delivering a thrilling performance that pushed the song into the Top 10.
Although the group now had a first hit single under its belt, and second album Queen II had just been released to critical acclaim, many felt that playing The Rainbow was overambitious. It was the premier London venue of the time, on a par with L.A.’s Palladium and New York’s Fillmore East. But the band had paid its dues, slugging it out in clubs and college halls for four years, and never doubting their own potential. The band’s confidence was vindicated when the venue quickly sold out the capacity of more than 3,000 seats – with some fans paying as much as £1.20 for a ticket!
Queen’s performance was spectacular from the second that Freddie Mercury strutted onto the stage in his soon to become trademark white “eagle suit”, a tight -fitting number specially made for him by top fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, which featured flowing winged sleeves. He pranced and posed, capturing the audience in seconds with his extraordinary voice and stage presence, while Brian May provided the counterpoint with his remarkable and ground-breaking guitar playing. The powerful “engine room” (as they liked to call it) of drummer Roger Taylor and bass player John Deacon completed a sound unlike anything British audiences had previously heard. Enraptured fans clapped and cheered, and gave the band a standing ovation.
That electrifying show was recorded by Roy Thomas Baker, co-producer of Queen's first four studio albums, and slated to be the band's third album (and debut live album) - a career defining release like James Brown's Live At The Apollo or The Who's Live At Leeds. Intended to be a recording that captured the magic of a live band firing on all cylinders, Queen: Live at the Rainbow ’74 would undoubtedly have been a big success. But Queen’s ferocious creative momentum produced a stack of new songs begging to be recorded and instead of releasing the live album the band went into the studio to record what was to become 1974's breakthrough album, Sheer Heart Attack. As a result the already completed Rainbow live album was shelved and consigned to the archives.
Later in 1974 Queen had their first chart-topping single, Killer Queen, which encapsulated their brand of driving rock and clever lyrics. It appeared on Sheer Heart Attack, which was released in the autumn, was a massive hit and remains to this day many fans’ favourite Queen album. To celebrate this success and crown a remarkable year, Queen returned to The Rainbow in November 1974 for two sell-out gigs that were even more spectacular than the one in March. These concerts included the typically flamboyant performance of Now I’m Here with which they had been wowing audiences on the tour. It featured Freddie apparently appearing in a spotlight on opposite sides of the stage almost simultaneously. The concerts received massive acclaim from fans and critics alike, and won over many who had until then doubted the band’s potential. In this year, Queen also undertook their first concerts in Australia, USA, Sweden, Finland, Holland, Belgium and Spain.
Now, a remarkable 40 years later, Queen: Live at the Rainbow ’74 has finally surfaced from the archives, providing an invaluable record of emerging superstars demonstrating their talent.
Queen, Virgin Records and Eagle Rock Entertainment are proud to announce that Queen: Live at the Rainbow ‘74 will be released on 8th September 2014 (UK on Virgin Records) and 9th September 2014 (US through Hollywood Records) in a variety of formats all newly mixed and mastered to the highest contemporary standard. These range from a standard two CD package, a DVD, an SD Blu-ray, a gate-fold double vinyl (including an audio reproduction of the aforementioned original live album), a quadruple vinyl boxed set, to a super deluxe collector’s edition. This comprehensive and fascinating package includes two CDs, a DVD and Blu-Ray, a 60 page hardback book containing many rare photographs, and various items of memorabilia such as reproductions of the tickets, show souvenir programme and poster, as well as material from the band members’ personal archives. (Full details of the various packages which will be released can be found at the end of this release). Vinyl and super deluxe formats are released as limited editions.
These recordings capture Queen at that time in all their glory: the dramatic stage presence, the highly original self-penned repertoire of songs, high-energy performances coupled with stunning melodic and harmonic content, and the uncompromising perfectionist approach to every aspect of their performance which is still maintained to this day.
Queen dazzled their audiences in 1974 with an unforgettable show delivered with a skill and confidence which belied their youth. The tape machines were rolling, capturing the highly electric performances. Now, to mark the 40th anniversary of these legendary shows, here, finally, is Queen: Live at the Rainbow ’74- lovingly restored, edited, mixed and digitally mastered, and including much footage never previously seen. It is a collection every Queen fan will want to possess.
Queen will be touring North America, Asia and Australia this summer with virtuoso vocalist Adam Lambert. The tour kicks off June 19th at Chicago's United Centre. Tour dates and ticket information can be found at queenonline.com.

Some fascinating (and noteworthy) facts about Queen: Live at the Rainbow ’74:
The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke, (from Queen II) was inspired by a painting by Richard Dadd (1817-1886) which now hangs in the Tate Gallery, having been donated to the gallery by war poet Siegfried Sassoon. The song is by far the most significant song on the Rainbow project in terms of rarity. The March 31st show was the last time Queen performed it in concert and this is the only known live recording of the song. The track’s appearance on this package is likely to be the biggest surprise on the set.
Great King Rat and Modern Times Rock'n'Roll (from the first album), See What A Fool I've Been (the non-album B-side of Seven Seas of Rhye) and Flick of the Wrist (from Sheer Heart Attack), are also included on an official Queen live product for the first time.
The November show was released in part (not full) on the 1992 VHS, part of the little-known Box of Tricks package, but the March show has never been officially released.
On the 1992 VHS Liar and Keep Yourself Alive (from first album), Father To Son (from Queen II) and Jailhouse Rock only featured in part, whereas now onQueen: Live at the Rainbow ’74 they are full versions for the first time. Modern Times Rock'n'Roll, Flick Of The Wrist, Seven Seas of Rhye and Big Spender (all from November) were NOT on the VHS video, so this is the first time they have emerged.
The following 15 songs from March and November Rainbow 1974 concerts have never appeared on any official Queen live album before (this excludes video):Procession, Father to Son, Ogre Battle, Son and Daughter, White Queen, Great King Rat, The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke, Modern Times Rock'n'Roll, Liar, See What A Fool I've Been, Flick of the Wrist, In the Lap of the Gods (not to be confused with In The Lap Of The Gods... Revisited), The March of the Black Queen, Bring Back that Leroy Brown and Stone Cold Crazy.

2014 Queen + Adam Lambert Tour countdown….
6.18.14 by Q3
OMG!!! --- Tomorrow!!
#1 “God Save The Queen” (1975)
The Queen + Adam Lambert countdown ends today as it should end with "God Save the Queen."
The rock band Queen recorded an instrumental version of "God Save the Queen" on their 1975 album A Night at the Opera. It was arranged by guitarist Brian May and features his distinctive layers of overdubbed electric guitars. A tape of this version would be played at the end of almost every concert, with Freddie Mercury walking around the stage wearing a crown and a cloak on their Magic Tour in 1986. While the song was played, the Queen members would take their bows. On June 3, 2002, during the Queen's Golden Jubilee, Brian May performed the anthem on his Red Special electric guitar for Party at the Palace, performing from the roof of Buckingham Palace, and features on the 30th Anniversary DVD edition of A Night at the Opera.
Prior to the recorded version of "God Save The Queen", the UK audiences would sometimes sing GSTQ at the end of Queen concerts. As far as I can determine, the recorded GSTQ was first played at the end of the February 5, 1975 concert in Columbus, OH. Queen has ended their concerts with GSTQ ever since.
