In the current state of music, I am not sure that having a big pop radio hit really matters that much. Yeah...... just ask Robin Thicke, Carly Rae Jepson and Phillip Phillips. The only person to make anything other than money from 'Blurred Lines' was Pharrell. Thicke's current album had a dismal opening week, sales in the hundreds in the UK and Canada and only 54 in Australia. < 25,000 in the U.S. Where is Jepson? Anyone? 'Call Me Maybe' was HUGE! After the monster North American success of 'Home' and a quick turn around, P2 took > 5 weeks for his sophomore album to equal Trespassings first week sales. It will never likely reach Adam's sophomore worldwide sales, and may not even top AL's last known U.S. sales. Very few artists hit it BIG now. Maybe a few names each year make an impact. Seriously.... you could count them on one hand.

I sense that Adam has earned RESPECT! This will serve him better than one smash hit such as Call Me Maybe.

I get annoyed when someone compares a current, relatively new performer's work with the catalog of music (or movies or books, etc.) of someone who has been around for thirty or forty years. Songs that are forgettable tend to be--well, forgotten, so people judge the seasoned performer only by those songs which have stood the test of time. "Instant classics" don't really happen that often. As has been mentioned here before, Queen wasn't always treated kindly by critics in their heyday. It's only in retrospect that they're acknowledged as having a wealth of great and classic songs.
I think Trespassing is a brilliant album, and the best songs on it were those written by Adam. He's a really good songwriter, in my opinion. It's a shame that RCA didn't have enough faith in him to release his material instead of pushing the singles that were attempts to replicate the success of WWFM.

Carly Rae Jepsen is in Cinderella on Broadway, still I think.
It was RCA's idea to put Adam together with Pharrell and I live those two tracks + Shady a lot. I can't completely hate on them.
Not to be a Robin Thicke apologist again, but he was a songwriter for others, had a record deal at 16 or something but wasn't ready and then got tons of respect for many years. His audience was middle-aged black women mainly. I think his songs with Lil Wayne are genius. I would LOVE it if Robin wrote something with Adam. Likely? Probably not. My guess is that people had so many issues with Blurred Lines and then this whole Paula album. I loved his last album and I don't even want to buy an album about getting his wife back. Good luck to him though. Very talented. A douche? No clue.
I think to say any other song on Trespassing would be a radio hit if RCA interfered is stretching it. Sometimes I think Adam really wants to be Britney. I thought his whole Madonna Ray of Light thing was weird and vocally not great. Adam should be Adam. He's no Britney or Madonna.

We have rehashed this 1,000 times already -- Trespassing is a #1 album BUT Trespassing did not produce a hit single and Trespassing only sold modestly. Neither a hit or a flop. In the gray middle. In the current state of music, I am not sure that having a big pop radio hit really matters that much. Yes, Adam wants one, but what he needs more than that is an album/tracks that sell. Radio airplay is one way to drive sales -- but not the only way. And what he really, really needs is to get great reviews -- and a pop radio hit might actually hurt that. Adam does need some great songs that he "owns" -- that are not Queen songs. He has two, WWFM and Mad World. The association with Queen has given him a few songs that he can continue to perform -- WWTLF and TSMGO are top of that list. But he needs a song that really showcases his vocal skills and that is unlikely to also be a pop radio hit. It is clear that Adam has decided to maximize his financial potential and the Queen + AL tour does that. And it looks like (as expected) they will extend the tour. For perspective, Adam will make > $10 million for this tour -- that is more than he will make from his upcoming album even if it has a mega #1 pop hit.
The Q+AL Tour + a hit album for A3 = Adam might be able to do a headline arena tour. And that is the big win I think he is working toward. But there is no chance he could fill arenas now, without Queen.

I feel I might be able to give a bit of an outsider perspective here. You guys here would buy a CD of him singing the phone book so it's hard for you guys in general to see the forest for the trees. Like me with Queen maybe Now previously, either he or his label (pre A2) wanted him to do a dance-pop kind of album. His casual fans, I think, didn't want this. The ones who liked him on Idol and got FYE - they liked his pop/rock stuff. Those are the ones he lost between FYE and Trespassing As an outsider of sorts - I bought and enjoyed FYE. I definitely liked some tracks more than others. I went on and bought Trespassing and quite honestly, I wasn't a fan. I liked a few of the tracks but it was all pretty forgettable if I'm honest. And I think it's more flop than hit...It did well to debut at #1 but it sank like a stone. So when people say he needs songs, that's partially true. He needs songs that are memorable and will connect with a casual audience. BUT I honestly think he needs some cohesion more. He needs to sit down with a songwriter and develop an album long vision, get a quality band together and work together to fulfill this vision and not just a collection of songs. He needs to find a young Brian May-esque type musician and just bang out about 30 songs and work it through to the finish... BUT This is all my opinion. EDIT IN: OH...I plan on getting it still...it's the least I could do Of course personally I wish him well...of course selfishly, I'm hoping that sooner than later I'll get to hear a QAL album

Cassie, I adore your post! I also agree with rama that Adam has gained so much respect from this tour. That is so invaluable in helping to erase any stigma the Idol tagline has attached to him. I posted this before after the Chicago show that I had taken along my ultra rock-snob, anti-American Idol sister who had always kind of smirked at my Adam adoration. She's no longer smirking. She was amazed by his live voice, how it filled the stadium, and how he authentically rocked out. She also thought he looked fantastic. She won't automatically become an Adam fan, but, unlike before her Queenbert experience, I'm pretty confident she will now judge Adam's songs with a new ear and without her former anti-talent show bias. I'm excited to be going to Detroit tomorrow, and I sold extra tickets I had to a neighbor who has just recently gotten into Queen. She's not very familiar with Adam, but a few weeks ago I showed her the IHeart YouTubes, and she thought he was amazing. I can't wait to hear her impressions of the show!
