Queen + Adam Lambert announce NZ show
Thursday 17 Jul 2014 6:00a.m.
By 3 News online staff
Legendary rock band Queen is returning to New Zealand this September with Adam Lambert in the place of late frontman Freddie Mercury.
The 'Bohemian Rhapsody' rockers have added a September 3 concert at Auckland's Vector Arena to their Queen + Adam Lambert tour.
Queen formed in 1970 and last visited New Zealand in 1985. Original members Brian May (guitar, vocals) and Roger Taylor (drums, vocals) are playing in the current tour, while John Deacon (bass) is not.
The band's iconic singer Freddie Mercury passed away in 1991.
In November 2011, American Idol runner-up Lambert joined Queen as lead singer at the MTV Europe Music Awards, where the band was honored with the Global Icon Award.
Since then, Lambert has performed on and off with the band. The Queen + Adam Lambert tour of North America was announced in May, but later expanded to include Korea, Japan and Australia.
"I'm completely in awe of the Queen phenomenon. The thought of sharing the stage for a full set in Australasia is so beautifully surreal," says Lambert.
"I'm honoured to be able to pay my respects to Freddie's memory; he's a personal hero of mine, and I am deeply grateful for the chance to sing such powerful music for fans of this legendary band. I know this tour will be a huge milestone for me, and with the support of Brian, Roger and the rest of the band, I feel like magic will be on display."
Tickets to the Auckland concert go on sale Thursday, July 24 through Ticketmaster.co.nz.

Brian May in rhapsodies over Queen's NZ return with Adam Lambert
By Russell Baillie
12:06 AM Thursday Jul 17, 2014
Queen, one of the biggest-selling, best-loved and most enduring bands in rock history is heading to Auckland for the first time in nearly 30 years.
Yes, you read that correctly.
Despite the death of the band's flamboyant frontman Freddie Mercury in 1991, Queen is playing Vector Area on Wednesday, September 3 - with American Idol star Adam Lambert on vocals.
Lambert first performed with original Queen members guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor in 2009, on the television singing competition that launched his solo career.
The band and Lambert have since toured together, first in Europe in 2012 and in the United States and Canada in recent months, where they have been winning rave reviews from critics.
Watch a clip from the opening night of Queen with Adam Lambert's North American tour
Speaking to Timeout from Toronto this week, May said he was heartened by the social media reaction to Lambert's stage performance from diehard Queen fans who might be sceptical about the combo.
"The fit is incredibly good and, from the point of view of Queen fans, Adam is just 100 per cent better than anyone realised.
"Adam has got a voice in a billion and his range is stupendous and he has now learned, as Freddie did, to bring it into harness - he's not a boy anymore and his interpretation of songs is breathtaking."
May refuted the notion that he and Taylor could be seen as playing in a tribute band to themselves.
"The tribute band will reproduce what we used to do, whereas what we are doing now is taking it to a different place, evolving it in a different way and it's a joy.
"Within our show we have little points of nodding to Freddie and we are very conscious that it could be too much and it could be too little. But we think we've got it just fine to make that connection and reinforce that Freddie, in a sense is very much still part of this."
May says he well remembers Queen's last appearance in New Zealand - in 1985 at the height of their stadium-filling heyday.
"Oh my God. You bet I remember it. It was one of the greatest moments of our lives. It was such a stupendous gig, on and off stage. Auckland was just incredible. Incredibly memorable. ..."
Er, why?
"That would be telling. It was a very strange day and Tony Hadley [Spandau Ballet] was there, who was a great friend of Freddie's and I think the show was delayed for some technical reason and the two of them had a lot to drink before the show started.
"So it was very memorable for us and quite exciting. I still think it was a great show."
The Queen show at Vector promises "a truly stunning production that encapsulates all the operatic spectacle and glamour befitting a Queen performance". May says as well as the best-known hits, they will be performing some older album tracks for fans of the band's early hard rock period.
Tickets go on sale 9am, Thursday July 24.

Adam Lambert Lives Proud, Gets His Life
By Lyndsey Parker
Reality Rocks
Adam Lambert is currently on the road fronting the massive rock band Queen, which means he's being heard by more people than ever before and reaching new audiences. So the timing is perfect for him to participate in AT&T's second annual Live Proud campaign, which seeks to foster awareness, empowerment, and pride throughout the LGBT community and beyond.
Through August 10, fans can enter to win a trip to New York to meet Adam at a private event by submitting a unique meme that represents a personal "Live Proud" moment. Yahoo Music got a chance to catch up the living-proud singer himself between Queen dates to talk about his history of activism and advocacy, how the world has changed in the years since he broke down barriers on American Idol, and how the Internet can be a placed for lovers, not haters.
YAHOO MUSIC: When you first got off Idol, you didn't really discuss your sexuality or political issues. But over the years, you've become very outspoken about a lot of great causes, a real ambassador. What changed over that time?
ADAM: It just wasn't something that I was immediately interested in. I think I'm a little bit of a tunnel-vision type of a person; I think a lot of creative artists tend to be. I get kind of OCD and obsessed with a project, and that's kind of what my whole world becomes. On Idol I was really consumed with, "OK, what songs do I want to do every week?" Then I started looking ahead a little bit and what was on the radar was, "OK, now you have to make an album." But then my recording career was off to a good start, and more and more things started showing up on the periphery, different opportunities to turn my celebrity around and use it for good. I just became more and more interested in those types of opportunities: charity work, and organizations like GLAAD and the Trevor Project. And slowly but surely, as I got my footing, it was something that I felt I could contribute to.
I know sometimes you've said you felt a little uncomfortable being a "role model" for the gay community, because there are so many different opinions within that community…
I think things are definitely changing, and I think they're changing for the better. I think that there's still a bit of a generational gap within the LGBT community. There's kind of the older school's philosophies on activism and integration and all these issues, and then there's the kids that are coming up now, the new members of the community, the people that are 18, 19, 20, 21 — they have a different outlook on all of it, because they've grown up in a different time and the community is changing so rapidly. Even the civil rights side of it is changing so rapidly, so it's going to create a bit of a divide. I think when I started come into prominence after Idol, we were kind of right in that tipping point. And now it's starting to get a little bit better, I think.
Do you think you were instrumental in changing people's minds about the gay community or gay rights, that you helped foster acceptance in any way?
I don't think I can sit here and say I did something, that's pretty narcissistic. But I do think the timing was very particular. When I hit on Idol, it was at a time when, if you really think about it, there weren't a ton of out celebrities, especially men. So it was at a time where the gay community was really just starting to integrate into mainstream pop culture, as opposed to continuing to be kind of the niche thing that we always have been. Now, five years later, we're such a big part of pop culture, like regular mainstream pop culture. So I think it's almost easier now than it was five years ago, which is exciting, because I'm curious to see how that affects connecting to people musically.
Does that mean you'll have more topical songs on your next album, along the lines of the gay rights anthem "Outlaws of Love" from Trespassing?
I'm not sure. "Outlaws of Love" just happened. It was pretty organic; I was sitting there writing and it just kind of came up, you know? A lot of the stuff that comes up is very impulsive and it just kind of happens, and then you capture it and it turns into a song. But it's hard for me to say now, "Oh yeah, hold on, let look at my crystal ball and see what I'm going to be inspired by."
Have you received any interesting feedback from fans about how you've affected them?
I've gotten a couple letters. I've met a couple people, for sure. I got a letter from a woman in Utah, and she was saying, "I grew up in a very conservative area and we didn't understand anything about gay people, it was just a thing no one talked about. And then I became a fan of you and you started talking about it, and it forced me to ask some questions and get comfortable with it, because I wanted to understand it." And I think she said she made friends with her hairdresser or something, which was ironically cliché! But it was a really nice letter to get from somebody that had chosen to open her mind. To be able to kind of be a catalyst for somebody that way is pretty cool, pretty powerful.
Of course, there will always be haters, especially on the Internet. Twitter and websites' comments sections are so full of hate, and sometimes you get the brunt of it. How do you deal?
I think we can all get sucked into it. But the thing to keep in mind is that life is not necessarily only on the Internet! Real life is not all that. I think there's so much in our lives that we live on the Internet, and we forget that there's another dimension we're missing out on. And I think when people get sucked into these arguments and debates on comment sections in blogs and whatever, it's not even a real debate. I mean, you can't even see the person and so much of the inflection gets lost in translation, it's not even a real conversation. I always kind of joke, like, "God, I wish these people who go online and bully people and hate people could have the balls to do it to their faces." Because it would probably be a much different ball game.
But now you're using the Internet and social media for good.
Yes, on the flipside, the Internet can be an amazing tool and super-powerful. This Live Proud campaign that I'm part of is kind of my way of marching in a flag parade, but doing it simultaneously on the Internet with fans. It's obviously to promote empowerment and pride and individuality, and to remind people that there's a way to kind of assert yourself and to be your own person, and break out of the lemmings mentality.
What does it mean to you to "live proud"?
I think actions speak even louder than words, and I think that just by daring to just be different, that in itself is a statement. It's not easy to go about your life or your creative artistry that way. I think for everybody, whether you're in high school or you're older, following trends and following the fold is usually the safer way to go about things. But it takes a lot of guts to be different and be an individual. And I think that that's part of this campaign, is let your voice be heard and figure out a way to sum up in a meme what your mission statement is, or what your outlook is.
Do you have any special memes?
Yeah, I created a couple that we tweeted out. I said "Get Your Life," which is in [my song with Avicii] "Lay Me Down" that I wrote. I wanted to try to incorporate some of the language I hear in the gay community, kind of the slang and empowerment speech that I hear. That's something people say, like, "Oh, get your life" — kind of a more interesting way of saying, "Go on with your bad self!"

QueenOnline on Tour: Double Texan Special
Wilki, our QOL.eswebmaster is over in North America taking in 14 shows of the Queen + Adam Lambert tour. He out there as a fan, but we could not resist getting to do a few reports while he is out on his adventure...
***
Nick asked me to do some tidbit pieces about the remaining Queen + Adam Lambert tour dates in North America. As Houston was my first gig on the run, after a 10.500 km flight from Buenos Aires via Miami and 120 minutes of a nerve-wrecking World Cup semifinal, I decided to play it safe, and wait until I had seen a couple of shows before I write my first impressions. So here it is - a double Texan special, with a side of mac 'n' cheese.
OK, Houston first, but before that... a cultural-shock-type-of-thing... Floor seats!? I mean, FLOOR SEATS!? at the ARENA!? in a ROCK concert!? I wouldn't have worried... In both shows, right after the first seconds of kick drum from Procession, all the floor people stood up and remained that way pretty much the whole time. Kudos to them.
Back to the Houston Toyota Center... I didn't catch many of the first three songs, as I was 'on duty' taking photos, besides a lovely lady who had come all the way from New Orleans to review the show. Then, Fat Bottomed Girls and... 'Houston, we've got a problem', Brian's guitar for that song refused to do the blast-off. After some guitar changing and some re-tuning, everything was right on the orbit. Lap Of The Gods followed, and I noticed how tight the backing vocals are - in the whole medley, in fact. During Killer Queen, a girl behind me grabbed my shoulder and shouted "This is too much, ain't it? Too much!" as Adam was doing his thing on on the couch joined by Brian - she was really enjoying herself, so I took it as a good sign. Adam: "This is not me. I'm trying to connect with you guys". Somebody To Love was superb, with the audience joining in for every bit. Brian got a standing ovation during his vocal part in I Want It All. The audience seemed more shy during Love Of My Life, perhaps they were overwhelmed by emotion. For '39 the whole band entered the B stage wearing NASA caps, courtesy of Brian's morning trip to the Space Center. He introduced Mr. Taylor "in the cockpit" told us all that Spike's accordion was actually a time-machine! After Days Of Our Lives, magnificently sung by Rog, he dueted with Adam in Under Pressure - standing ovation, again. But before that, Neil Armstrong, I mean Fairclough incorporated Don't Try Suicide, Body Language and Dragon Attack into his bass solo, followed by a frantic drum duet by Rufus and his dad. The re-vamped version of Love Kills and Who Wants To Live Forever brought the house down - Adam really nails them both. Between Tie Your Mother Down and Radio Ga Ga, Adam did his vocal play with the audience. For some reason, Dr. May wasn't able to play the solo from the latter. A somewhat fast-paced The Show Must Go On followed. Bo Rhap left everyone waiting for more. For the encores, Brian wore a Houston Astros baseball shirt, with the name May and the number 14 on its back.
Edit: Brian said in his website that he thinks he was below the crowd's expectations in this show. Well, if you ask me, the Doc worries too much... :-)
Howdy, Dallas! After some Dealey square walk-around and some steak, I was in the AA Center, what a huge place! Good seats, near a Dutch couple (sorry, dudes!). Now I could properly enjoy the beginning of the show, and what can I say? THAT's the way to start it! Fans of the 'Sheer Heart Attack' album should be on the clouds: 4 songs on the setlist of the current tour and Live At The Rainbow '74 out in September. Fat Bottomed Girls not only was glitch-less this time, it was also perfect, with Brian improvising solo after solo. The medley was again brilliant - 'wowo lalala' sing-along included! That set the mood for Somebody To Love. Brian become quite emotional during Love Of My Life. Not a single dry eye! '39 got Rufus, Neil and Brian himself on cowboy hats for the rendition of this "country song", Brian asked for a "yeeeeow!" at the end - he surely got one. Neil added Staying Power to his solo. Taylor junior and Taylor senior did a great job on their shared solo, prompting a proud dad to acknowledge: "Rufus Tiger Taylor on drums!" Under Pressure, the new Love Kills and Who Wants To Live Forever were followed by three resounding standing ovations in a row - the band was on fire. And it got better! Adam's vocal ad-libs between Tie Your Mother Down and Radio Ga Ga developed into a full-band jam. Then Crazy Little Thing Called Love ended with both Brian and Adam lying on the stage, after an extended coda with an sparkling Spike. Tie Your Mother Down had the Taylors on a tight pattern - Rog on timpani. In Bohemian Rhapsody, I noticed how Freddie's image quality varied between the film-sourced and video-sourced material. The ending was powerful. By the way, I must say this was probably one of the finest live shows I've attended in my entire life.
Over for now,
Wilki

Fit for a Queen: Adam Lambert fronts rock royalty tonight
Josh Kruger
When Simon Cowell opined to Rolling Stone that Adam Lambert had a “touch of Freddie Mercury and the sexiness of Prince,” Lambert was still coming off his American Idol fame, eye shadow and all. Cowell probably had no idea how on point he was, with Lambert years later—meaning now—out on tour with the modern incarnation of Queen, once led by Freddie Mercury, who died of AIDS in 1991 when Lambert was nine years old. Twenty years later, and Lambert’s fronting Mercury’s band.
Queen, aptly named considering the band is inarguably rock royalty, brings its 20-year catalogue to Philly for a Wells Fargo Center extravaganza, with Lambert singing lead vocals aside original Queen members Roger Taylor and Brian May—and man, how thrilling it’ll be to witness Lambert singing in tribute to the unique styles of the charismatic Mercury, including the song that made Wayne’s World famous, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and pretty much every other Queen hit that has become worldwide rock standard. The tour’s been pretty well-received, too. Writes Jason Bracelin of the Las Vegas Review-Journal: Lambert sings with “an almost off-handed operatic flair” which fits the band well, particularly given that Lambert is prone to “unselfconsciously wear a leopard-print suit … eliciting neither grimaces nor guffaws.”
Lambert’s comfort in his own skin-tight jeans probably accounts for his wide appeal in America, and, in particular, amongst queer people. After all, Lambert, like Mercury, is queer. That may not be news of the world, but it gives Queen’s ongoing legacy a kind of magic.
