Adam Lambert’s Most Significant American Idol Performances Ranked In Order Of Impact
10. KISS Medley - No he did not fall off his platform boots, yes he is wear the Bob Mackei wings that belong to drag Queen friend, yes Gene he can sing better than you.
9. WWFM - Adam returns to Idol as a successful recording artist, blows everyone away.
8. Tracks of My Tears - Adam gets Smokey's seal of approval. WOW!
7. Mad World - Tears for Fears. Swapped it for Beleive, that was only 10 secs of vocals at tops. Mad World was the performance that got Adam mass appeal. Still arguably the shows most famous performance, and critics argued its case for changing the entire idea of Idol.
6. A Change is Gonna Come
5. Black or White. Adam was outed with kissing pics on the internet. He thought he might just have lost his big chance. He was apprehensive about what the audience reaction would be. Instead of folding, he addresses the issue with song choice, nails the performance, gets rave reviews from the judges, and is overwhelmed with relief/joy and fights back the tears during the comment section.
4. Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash - Talk about polarizing!!
3. Bohemian Rhaposody - Queen - When Adam was discovered by millions of Americans, the performance that Brian May first saw.
2. Aftermath (acoustic) - Adam Lambert
1. We Are The Champions - Queen - Adam's first meeting and performance with Brian and Roger.

OK, I have a stupid question, so bear with me - What was SO very extraordinary about the Mad World performance? Don't get me wrong, I love it, but I don't watch American Idol (I only saw Adam's performances on youtube), so I don't get why Mad World was so "Idol-changing"... can someone explain it to me - from the performance standpoint, what exactly was the 1st time ever, apart from Adam changing up the song? was it his staging, his use of lights? had that never been done before, or what?

Well its not that lighting and smoking on stage hasent been used before. Its their for contestents to use, clearly David Cook influenced him. It was the way he used the lighting, smoking, the stairs, gis costumes. He changed idol from a very karoke competition to almost a dramatic berlesique, almost a mini Adam Lambert concert. But the performance of MW challenged contestents and arguably future contestents to think about arrangements and being a relevant artist. For s8 anyway he changed the game, and forced contestents to step up their game to a required lvl to compete with Adam. So in essence MW was game changing.

So I am assuming same rules apply you can make one change per post... so here it is using most recent posted list. Am removing the whole Kiss thing because - well I can :-) and adding in Whole Lotta Love which I think was a more pivotal performance and set the stage for his second most famous cover song behind Mad World that he carried with him through the Idol tour and into GNT.
10. Whole Lotta Love - First time Led Zepplin ever approved to have one of their songs used and first time "gimme your love way down inside" was ever sung on the idol stage accompanied by humping of microphone (even though the cameramen showed Adam from waist up = shades of Elvis) oh and all done while dressed like a cross between Johnny Depp's pirate and every second guy in the Castro!

Personally I've never really gotten the whole "Mad World = amazing" thing. His version was a pretty straight cover of one originally done by Gary Jules for movie Donnie Darko. His vocal was good (well except for the last bum note) and the staging was appropriately wistful and spooky (hard combo to pull off). But I've never been a fan of the song so other than love Adam singing even if it were the phone book, I'm probably not the best person to comment on this question
