OK, I have a stupid question, so bear with me - What was SO very extraordinary about the Mad World performance? Don't get me wrong, I love it, but I don't watch American Idol (I only saw Adam's performances on youtube), so I don't get why Mad World was so "Idol-changing"... can someone explain it to me - from the performance standpoint, what exactly was the 1st time ever, apart from Adam changing up the song? was it his staging, his use of lights? had that never been done before, or what? If I recall, Adam was closing the show that night but the show went long, like unbelievably 10 min long. It's live. Those who DVR'd AI therefore had to seek out the show on this thing called "youtube" because it didn't record it. Otherwise they thought they were watching the beginning of the show "Fringe" LOL.

I've never been an "Aftermath" fan- why is this performance considered significant?

Don't get me wrong, I love it, but I don't watch American Idol (I only saw Adam's performances on youtube), so I don't get why Mad World was so "Idol-changing"... can someone explain it to me - from the performance standpoint, what exactly was the 1st time ever, apart from Adam changing up the song? was it his staging, his use of lights? had that never been done before, or what? I think it is the first time that people discovered Adams ability to sing a song in a way that touches your heart directly. He really delivered the lyrics in a way that resonated with a lot of people. But I am maybe not the best ambassador of this performance (can't really listen to it, because I know that last note is coming). So I googled a bit and found this as a comment on an old blog: www.rickey.org/adam-lambert-mad-world-video-mp3-american-idol-8-top-8/13956/"Having never felt a need to "blog" before, I now find myself doing this. I'm a 51 yr old guy, and have seen and done a whole lot. There's really nothing that affects me much. And yet... I turn the set on and here's this kid singing "Mad World", a song I have never heard before. Something happens in my soul. My oh my what power there is in music. And now I read that this kid has touched a lot of lives with that 3 minute performance. Adam, all I can say (as I wipe away some tears) is "Good job"..."

Another thing about MW is he diddnt sing it in a conventional way, very unique arrangement, even Gary Jules said so. He also got compared to Elvis for his ability to resonate with ppl emotionally, doesent matter if hes singing to one person or a thousand, it feels like he is singing to you and you alone. So i get why some felt the performance was overrated compared to his others, but it brought attention from the masses.
