He wasn't just singing the song beautifully, he gave it an emotional arc that was unexpected and highlighted the yearning and despair of the song. You could argue that the original version with it's flat monotone delivery is a better example of depression and that may be true but Adam sang of the pathos behind that depression, he made us feel the confusion and longing. To do that, he used everything at his command - soft blue lighting, smoke to blur out detail, pale clothing, a single spotlight on sad seated figure, choreography which pretty much comprised standing and lifting the song to another place, his cadence and highlighting of particular phrases in the song, an ethereal clear tone to his voice that removed a connection to the ground, and although I don't think the last note miss was intentional, it did lend to the poignancy of that final plea for understanding and was ultimately human and perfect. So who else on Idol had ever done that before? The question is rhetorical. LindaG23 Very well said.!! I agree with all the above explanations of why MW touched so many. But I love the above description of the angst of the lyrics matched perfectly with the delivery and setting. For me, it was breathtaking and still is.

Antonis Kollias @anto_koll 50s @ladygaga The fact that huge artists like Brian May & Adam Lambert show RESPECT to Gaga is remarkable… It seems, she's doing something right

Thanks to everyone who shared their thoughts on Mad World. I was asking about the "idol changing" aspect of it, not so much how many people liked it etc. I've loved it since the first time I heard it, for all the reasons you guys mentioned, so I'm not surprised that a lot of people liked it when it happened. But, not having the context of a regular AI watcher, I never quite understood how it impacted the show itself or other contestants. He did Tracks of my Tears in an original way and got Smokey Robinson's standing O before Mad World ever happened, and frankly, to me, that is more of a game-changer. I would think that THAT was the moment when people would go - oh, he is a great artist, not just another singer - if they didn't already think that. So, the "idol changing" aspect of Mad World, from what I gather, was in the atmosphere he created with the staging and lighting, which hadn't been done before?

So, the "idol changing" aspect of Mad World, from what I gather, was in the atmosphere he created with the staging and lighting, which hadn't been done before? It was the combination of many things. The staging, absolutely. The voice, undoubtedly. The timing which led to Simon's only standing O and to folks searching Aam online and on YT, definitely. The angst conveyed so it hit many people in the gut, unquestionably. Many of us, at least in the US, had times of misery as adolescents where we felt like outcasts, misunderstood, shunned, and ridiculed. It amazes me how many confident, successful, smart adults still bear scars from their experiences with cruelty as a kid. For me, and for many others, I gather, Adam's rendition tapped into that emotion on a primal level. It was imprinted in our minds forever.

And yes toramenor, I think it is fair to say that everyone already knew that vocally he could not be matched but the totality of Mad World, the craftmanship, highlighted that he was a gifted performer and interpreter as well. This was more than Idol's usual visual reference to the number being performed projected on a screen behind the singer.

Huge artists Although I do think the tweeter may have understated Gaga's influence just a little bit. LOL.
