Talking about the significance of Mad World performance you're saying that it was something new, discussion point at water coolers and sent AI fans to YT when the broadcast ran overtime. I think even more significant for Adam was that the people who didn't watch AI got to see and hear him when tuning in or recording the next programme. If they liked it or not they knew about him because of the overtime. And I remember comments that they saw it by accident and were blown away.
I heard about him later and by that time there was too much material on YT to get a picture (I didn't particularly like WWFM although found the voice great) - it took another year before I was persistent enough to find fan sites and get an idea what to listen to from his various 'eras' as examples. Well, as you may guess, after that I've watched a lot more YTs.
My top 4 is Feeling Good, A Change Is Gonna Come, If I Can't Have You and Tracks of My Tears. Perhaps Whole Lotta Love next. But then again I always prefer the melodic, more 'quiet', emotional songs - I enjoy the voice more there. However, Mad World didn't grab me any more than all the others.

This is the first and only time I wish I was on twitter. And a standing ovation for Brian, Roger and Adam You can watch twitter even if you're not 'on' twitter. Just go to a random twitter address (say twitter.com/adamlambert) and use the little search box at the top of your screen. Best searches in this case are adamlambert or artraveperth. The biggest storm is already over now, but people are still talking. Have fun! Thank you - will give it a try.

OK, I have a stupid question, so bear with me - What was SO very extraordinary about the Mad World performance? Don't get me wrong, I love it, but I don't watch American Idol (I only saw Adam's performances on youtube), so I don't get why Mad World was so "Idol-changing"... can someone explain it to me - from the performance standpoint, what exactly was the 1st time ever, apart from Adam changing up the song? was it his staging, his use of lights? had that never been done before, or what? I think it is the first time that people discovered Adams ability to sing a song in a way that touches your heart directly. He really delivered the lyrics in a way that resonated with a lot of people. But I am maybe not the best ambassador of this performance (can't really listen to it, because I know that last note is coming). So I googled a bit and found this as a comment on an old blog: www.rickey.org/adam-lambert-mad-world-video-mp3-american-idol-8-top-8/13956/"Having never felt a need to "blog" before, I now find myself doing this. I'm a 51 yr old guy, and have seen and done a whole lot. There's really nothing that affects me much. And yet... I turn the set on and here's this kid singing "Mad World", a song I have never heard before. Something happens in my soul. My oh my what power there is in music. And now I read that this kid has touched a lot of lives with that 3 minute performance. Adam, all I can say (as I wipe away some tears) is "Good job"..." I think this explanation hits the heart of the matter. I wrote this yesterday, He wasn't just singing the song beautifully, he gave it an emotional arc that was unexpected and highlighted the yearning and despair of the song. You could argue that the original version with it's flat monotone delivery is a better example of depression and that may be true but Adam sang of the pathos behind that depression, he made us feel the confusion and longing. To do that, he used everything at his command - soft blue lighting, smoke to blur out detail, pale clothing, a single spotlight on sad seated figure, choreography which pretty much comprised standing and lifting the song to another place, his cadence and highlighting of particular phrases in the song, an ethereal clear tone to his voice that removed a connection to the ground, and although I don't think the last note miss was intentional, it did lend to the poignancy of that final plea for understanding and was ultimately human and perfect. So who else on Idol had ever done that before? The question is rhetorical.

I hope some video surfaces - that would be cool...I was kind of wondering if Brian might join Ga Ga on stage for You And I (like they did at the MTV awards a few years back) There will be videos! Her fans are more obsessed than we are. Check You Tube later for her "Born This Way" at Perth! Exellent! Thanks! So it happened during/around Born This Way?

If you want proof that Mad World was a significant performance for Adam, look no further than the fact that people still associate that song with him. He didn't write it and he wasn't the original singer of the song--he just did a 2-minute, edited performance on a reality show--but if he were taking requests, you can bet that a sizable number of people in the crowd would ask for Mad World.
My favorite part of that performance was when he stood up and at the same time his voice went from that sweet, high, haunting tone he'd been using to that powerful fill-the-theater knock-you-out-of-your-seat tone--"looked right throu-ough meeeee!" That was a goosebump moment and his timing was perfect.
