Is it typical for the drum tech to stay along side the kit? What typically goes wrong? Anyone know?

When your working for a band that plays in front of thousands of people a night and is such high profile, you cannot risk a failure. A failure during a show is simply NOT acceptable. It does happen and what makes a tech GREAT vs good is how you deal with it. I have changed out snares, Pedals, Hi-Hats and even bass drums in the middle of a song without having the drummer stop. So long as he or she knows what to do i can make it happen. My drummers knows what i can do so when something goes wrong if i don't notice it first, i get a look and then he looks at what is wrong and i act. A few shows ago i had a beater shaft snap on the main side of a double pedal. I saw it starting to bend so knew it was imminent. When it finally snapped i was already diving across the back of the riser and my drummer had instantly lifted his right foot and put it on the snare base. To clear the floor toms, i was sideways with my back against the floor toms and my rigth hand looseing the locking bolt on the beater holder and my left hand was going through the throne base and dropping the new beater in. I then slithered out backwards and his foot dropped back down and off he went. Total time from failure to back playing?, less then 45 seconds. Nobody even noticed.
I sit in a positon where i can see all the pedals and Hi-hats at almost eye level. And the angle i am at allows me to see them even when his legs are on them. And i have all the spares within arms reach. I hate having to scramble for parts during a show.
