The thing about Shady is that it is immediately recognizable. Just like AOBTD, the second those first couple of bars of Shady start, you are sitting straight up and you know exactly what is coming. I really think they could have repeated them one more time just to give the guy driving time to tell the passenger to turn up the radio or the person on the floor time to find someone to dance with ... then the very first lyric, "Baby I'm on the hunt, baby I've got my target on you" connects whoever is together. This two person connection is one of the best parts of WWFM. After that, everything on Shady is gravy. You are dancing, you are gettin' down, it was unlike anything on the radio at the time but included the rhythms that speak to the body. The chorus hook is perfect and easy to sing, "Cause I'm feeling so shady lately" just rolls off the tongue. The suits may have known what was current on the radio, but I contend that they didn't know why. Without a doubt Shady should have been the first promoted single, with a back-up of Naked Love.

IF Trespassing was released today on another label. I think it would fair better. I would of gone Cuckoo or PTL as the lead, then Shady or Naked Love. But as hinesight is a great thing.

Although I adore the BTIKM video, the initial announcement of it as a single is an easily remembered downer moment for me. I have got all my fingers and toes crossed for A3.

When I played Trespassing in my car with my grandson when the album first came out he would always want me to play Shady again. The hook is great and you just have to move when you hear it. It would have been my first choice then Cuckoo for my second song.

SHADY was my favorite as well---from the moment I first heard it.What a beat!! Thought it should have been a single, and heard all over the radio-better than anything I've heard on the radio-in a looong time!
Then one day, when my son was visiting me, we were talking about Trespassing and Adam's lyrics on the album. I asked him what he thought of SHADY and he stunned me by saying,"Mom , they can't play that song on the radio!" When I asked him why, he said ,"Come on, how graphic can you get--" and he started paraphrasing the lyrics,"Come on baby, pull it on out-get your ass down to the front!"
I still was unfazed. I told him that the song was incredible , the lyrics just fine by me and reminded him that I was raised on the Stones etc when I was 15-- and all I knew was that a great beat was a great beat. Satisfaction---He just shook his head, and reiterated that when it comes to Adam, for me ......anything goes.

I know what your son meant about the lyrics lorraine, but there have been some pretty graphic lyrics on the radio including my personal bête noire, Blurred Lines. However, I think he was wrong about the push back the song would have gotten. There was enough slurring in the "get your ass down to the front, go on and pull/roll it out, I dare you" to have leeway to play the pull it out "gay" side or the roll it out "bump and grind". Plus more importantly, I think the public was poised to get a little more funky (hence the rabid success of that bête noire of mine despite its lyrical insults) and Shady would have tapped into that.
Seriously, I would have loved this song from anybody, well anybody tall dark and sexy. 8-) I kind of get a little hot and bothered to this day thinking about what the video would have been like.

Thanks for thinking of me, adamrocks! I was out of town, back now and catching up. Love that red panda, when he stands up and hold those little paws up I could just die from the cuteness. He's a big boy now. Wonder what Adam has on tap for Halloween this year?

Linda G23--you don't have to convince me-I agree with you totally. I think the song is one of Adam's best ever-and Nile's guitar gave it incredible funk. I think it could have been a great success on radio as a single and I also agree that the lyrics were ambiguous enough to slide under the censorship radar--and the song/beat is sexy as hell. Just the first 5 notes bring me back to being 17 again when I felt the first stirrings of young womanhood and-well you know what I mean.
I shared what my son said to maybe give a little insight regarding the reactions of a straight male in his 30's-who listens to EVERYTHING out there in music today. I still think SHADY was a missed opportunity and will remain one of Adam's top tracks in his catalogue of music-especially as time goes on and his career continues to soar....
