"My brother and his wife - who were disappointed and underwhelmed at the Red Robinson show – are still not fans. They think the voice is good but that Adam doesn't have "stage presence" and is “no Freddie Mercury or Mick Jagger”. Whatever. "
This is funny,
melisande, because my husband, who did not watch AI, but who went to Gridlock with me, actually compared Adam's stage presence to Mick Jagger the first time he saw him. He works in the film industry and is around "stars" all the time and felt immediately that Adam had "star" power as a personality because of his presence and charisma. When he saw him again at his last show, he felt his stage presence was even stronger. My husband is also a musician and played in bands in his early years. I guess it
is subjective, but it seems like most people, even those who don't necessarily like the
style of Adam's music, feel his stage presence live.
I wonder if the expression of your brother's position is pushed more in the direction it is as a reaction to the extreme strength of your positive Adam opinions.
Like you, I think Bruno Mars has the kind of cheesy lyrics that appeal to teens and thus to
radio. And he delivers them with a nice smooth tone. You can sing his songs the first time
you hear them without even knowing the words and radio loves that. And I like his voice a lot better than some other voices I hear on the radio.
The thing is, Adam's personality and style is edgy and alternative, but he is coming off
Idol, and the two don't easily go hand in hand. The two audiences are pretty different.
That being said, Adam has won many more traditional listeners over, giving them what they didn't even know they wanted, which is pretty remarkable in itself. And the grammy
nom seems to have already given him more cred. The good thing is that he is mad talented and the camera loves him, and I think he is figuring out, and will continue to
figure out, what works for him as a brand as he continues to build his fan base both here and abroad.
The "why hasn't he made it to be as big as Bruno and Gaga etc. if he is so good"
argument is plain silly. Hardly anyone has that level of success, even successful musicians. There are many really talented working artists who would consider his level of success to be phenomenal as it is now. Add to that the fact that he is still a new artist, and the sum of all the parts seems to be that he is doing very well.
Right now Adam has the opportunity to live his dream, and I think he will make the most of his opportunities. i don't know exactly how his career will play out, but he will definitely be able to continue to support himself making music, and that is so awesome for him and for us.
In any case, I'm with you in feeling I want TPTB to know that Adam has passionate fans behind him that are ready to buy his product and that are here to stay. This is why I vote for everything Adam and buy and support whatever he puts out there. I want to be a part of the power of numbers to keep them feeling that Adam is a good long term investment.
I know you all get this, but apparently I needed to clarify it for myself, LOL.
