Social change feels very, very slow; but it is happening!
Some day, we will get to the point that same-sex couples are no big deal and MAYBE even little boys who like painting their toenails won't warrant a moments thought
Really? Will it? Do you think so? God, I hope so - I don't know.
It will. Without a doubt, I just know it. A change always comes, albeit slowly sometimes.
But in this, it will come sooner than we think. It's already here, if you think of it better-there's still a lot of oppression going on, but the change has already come. Those who can't accept it are
de facto having a reaction to the change that already
has occured. This whole "toe nail controversy"&other BS that came from it, is too just a piece of the same reaction puzzle, IMO.
We already have countries with legalized same-sex marriages, and regulation that allows adoptions etc. You have all kinds of TV programs that portray openly (or questioning) GLBT characters.
The key is to maximize awareness within the community about it.
People always tend to be negative or frightful of those things that are unknown to them, or just different than the norm.
But, as soon as the-whatever the subject/object-becomes more familiar, then the level of opposition as well as the percentage of those who oppose starts falling significantly.
(Wasn't there a survey of some kind not that long ago, about the percentage of Americans who support the GLBT community (or sthng like that, I forget).
The number has increased significantly over the last few years- it's the direct result of people being more exposed to it publicly, through different mediums; I believe that sitcoms and soap-operas especially, have a major role of introducing people to it in a subtle way. You see it daily, therefore it becomes more and more normal, common, up until the point people no longer think twice about it.
It's gonna happen for the GLBT community like it happened for all minority/oppressed groups. Just think, women couldn't vote until cca 1920's. Even maybe like 30 y.ago, interracial couples were frowned upon. Then, who'd think, even 5 years ago, that a black person could be President? They said it was impossible-now look!
Although I'm sure there are people who'll never be OK with it, all those things are so common now that majority can't imagine it differently now.
Also, the new generation is much more open, I assure you! ;D One of my best friends is an elementary school teacher, and told me that kids are so cool and accepting of many things adults still bitch about, you couldn't believe it.
So, to conclude, I'm not worried at all. The only constant thing we can ever be sure about it is the change itself, to paraphrase something a very wise Greek philosopher(Heraclitus of Ephesus) said.
Or, as George Harrison put it "all things must pass";or as our Adam said " A change is gonna come"
*hugs* to all, sorry for such a long post, it's a topic I'm passionate about
