I LOVE Master Plan and Loaded Smile both (if we're naming songs that didn't perhaps get enough exposure), Master Plan for its message and Loaded Smile because I can actually sing along to it without sounding totally awful

On this nite of messages - for our children, just wanna put in my two cents.

Obviously, my name says it all. I've had my share of kids. All boys.

Didn't stop me for a minute, when one wanted to dress up, sing and wear a flowerpot on his head. Beautiful, full of imagination - even when he came thru the kitchen and told me he wanted to change his name to Sam. This son and I were both in musical theatre. A director asked me one day - "What will happen if you find that ---- is gay?" My honest answer, 25 years ago, was this - - - "I will be sad. Because he will have to endure such hate. And, being selfish, I'll miss the children he'll never have". That's what I said, and that's how I felt - and how it was, at the time.
Well, this beautiful boy has grown, is married, is in major league baseball. Maybe there will be children one day.
The thing is this. He is who he is. As our my other children. As are yours. It doesn't matter who they love. I only care that they love; that they are not alone in life.
When I was little I felt like the only person who loved me was my mom. I was constantly reminded of how I didn't fit in. Homely, freckled, awkward. I think self worth and confidence came from having the nest of security I left every day and came home to every day. Adam had the same thing.
I want to contribute to a world where everyone can be free to create and imagine and see the world open-ended; there is no box where one 'must belong'.
My grandsons will be here this weekend. I have no clue where we will go. We might search for arrowheads by the creek; we may bake cookies; or plot lionel traintracks; or shampoo the dogs or ourselves; or, we may even paint our nails! My grandchildren live in homes without television. Or playpens.
There is hope!
