Oh my! Not so familiar with this song until Adam sang it in this UK Tour and I just love it. The first time he sang it in Newcastle ... I was not really as much connected as I was until Glasgow but this London O2 was phenominal. Question #1: Cassie, the way Adam ended the song, why does Adam he had to emphasize "from" (4:06) home. I would have preferred him to sustain the same (head voice?) he used from "FAR" (3:58) .... not really complaining.... Adam's style and for now, interpretation preference Question #2: With an acapella that Adam performed at the beginning of this song, who gives him the key to start the song? Does somebody send it remotely through his ear monitor? Or does Adam just start it the way he wants to start with and the band just went along with whatever key he started? Just curious. As for the beginning pitch, it comes from Spike. Listen to the very first couple of seconds and you hear an organ play a chord. (D3/G3/B3). That sets the key. Adam's first three notes are D3, B3, D4 - taken directly from Spike. Tricky, no?
As to why he makes the last phrase a little more brittle than the FARRRRRR, it is his style and interpretation preference. Nothing to do with his registers or range. What is impressive is that he sings the entire phhrase, "I'm naked and I'm faaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrr from hooooooooommmmmmee." in one breath. At first listen, you would expect him to break after "far". But with that third lung of his, he extends the phrase, and even sings the very last with power, just to prove he can, I suspect. (14 seconds of very controlled, supported, resonant phrasing. YUMMY!)

Wordpress BlogAdam is Naked and he’s Far from HomePosted on January 20, 2015But the moment where it all crystallizes, at least for me, is when Adam sings “Save Me” in the third act. This is a new addition for the UK/European tour, and it’s very powerful, especially as a lead-in to “Who Wants to Live Forever.” But what makes it that way is that Adam sings the first few lines a cappella. He stands on the top of a staircase that angles up from the stage to over the audience, all alone under a spot light. Just him, his voice and a microphone. There are no drums to keep him on beat; no instruments to keep him on key; no backing voices to hide any vocal mistakes. There’s nowhere to hide. He’s vulnerable, off balance. To quote the song, he is naked and he’s far from home. The music does come on, he makes his way down to the stage where Brian sits with his guitar, but he also sings the final soaring notes alone with just his voice. Filling the stadium with just his voice. Flawlessly and effortlessly, something no one else does. And still vulnerable in all the love and glory with which we clothe him.I don’t know if he’ll sing this song this way the whole tour – that’s the beauty of live and dangerous. Things can change. But I’m very glad he’s doing this song this way, demonstrating just how courageous they all are. READ MORE....

The beginning and ending of this song gets me every time. He stands spotlighted, leaning casually against the railing and... just sings. And yet rather than far from home he seems exactly where he wants to be. His "happy place" as Cassie noted in the Manchester thread (love that photo). He's got this, he can "sang" and he's not scared but secure in his training and his voice. No tricks. No theatrics. No net. Just pure glory and hands down my favorite moment in the show. And this version must be captured here - from Manchester: youtu.be/shPUQ_76s-U

In manchester version I think he takes a quick breath after "I'm naked and I'm" then sings "farrrrrr from hommmeeee". Is so subtle you almost miss it (3.37).

I've noticed that quick breath in at least the last two concerts. Probably part of the learning as he probably didn't practice exactly what he did the first concert and then decided he liked it but it was lots of work so made it easier.

Cassie or other gurus, what is that extended note on the last "far"? Gives me chills every time.
I hadn't really thought about it before hearing this song, but somewhere along the road from Idol to now he apparently has grown gills, because I remember back in his idol performances he would audibly inhale, almost like a gasp. I wondered at the time if it was for dramatic effect or singing necessity, and TBH I never liked it much. It always took me out of the performance momentarily.
Now it's like he doesn't need air...the music just flows effortlessly. Gorgeous.
