Leeds - January 20th 2015 Live Review
by Elinor Cosgrave | 21 Jan 2015
Sceptics were silenced when Adam Lambert took to the stage with Queen in Leeds on Tuesday evening (20th January). They may be over halfway through their worldwide tour, but the group were still going strong when they performed at the First Direct Arena.
Lambert, although a relatively new face in the UK, is well known in the US as a solo artist following his 'American Idol' breakthrough in 2009. His suitability as Queen's lead singer has frequently been called into question but, after numerous performances with the band since 2011, there is little doubt that Lambert is a highly talented addition to the group and one both guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor wholeheartedly approve of.
As with any performer who appears alongside Queen, Lambert is living in the shadow of Freddie Mercury. Mercury is renowned as one of the greatest frontmen of all time. With his showmanship and often brash humour, he has remained prominent in the public imagination as someone who exhibited true talent and joie de vivre but tragically died too young. Purists argue that Queen died with Mercury but, with Lambert at the helm supported by the experience of May and Taylor, it is evident this belief is unfounded.
On Tuesday evening, Lambert performed with gusto and, whilst alluding to Mercury and his influence (Lambert claiming during the performance that without Mercury 'I wouldn't know what I was f**king doing'), did not impersonate the late singer. Rather, he evoked all the characteristics which made Mercury a legendary showman: involving the audience, revelling in the attention and drawing focus to his fellow band members during their solo moments. Yet he still retained his own unique and highly professional manner throughout.
It is evident, 25 years after Mercury's death, that May and Taylor still miss Mercury's presence both as their friend and lead singer, with many tributes paid to him throughout the show. May performed a solo rendition of 'Love of My Life' and encouraged the crowd to participate, as Mercury often did, before the song ended with one of Mercury's performances projected on stage. Taylor later sang a touching rendition of 'These Are the Days of Our Lives' whilst images of the band, excluding the now retired John Deacon, flashed up on screens around the stage.
In many respects, this is what makes Queen great: their ability to perform both crowd pleasing anthems and heartfelt tributes to love and loss. Lambert, who may have outdone Mercury on the effeminacy scale with his performance of 'Killer Queen', also demonstrated his ability to perform in a more sombre yet still appealing fashion whilst singing 'Save Me' and 'Who Wants to Live Forever?'.
Mercury is irreplaceable but Lambert has the voice and the style to ensure his legacy lives on. May and Taylor remain at the top of their game and appeared to be greatly enjoying themselves and, more importantly, so were the audience. Ultimately, it was a flawless performance which sensitively paid tribute to Mercury's legacy. It showed how May and Taylor are still outstanding musicians, truly justifying Lambert's assessment of his two older band mates as 'rock icons'.

Live Review: Queen Adam Lambert – Leeds Arena 20/1/15
There was a point in the first half hour of last night’s two-hour show where I realised my face was hurting. It was then I realised that I’d been grinning non-stop since Brian May started thrashing out the opening chords of “One Vision”.
Two and a half years have passed since the inaugural London run- since then, Queen and frontman Adam Lambert have embarked on a huge US and Australasia tour before landing in Europe. And this show has grown in every way- the size/scope of the stage, the length of the set list…plus the incredible light displays. All of that extra time together has paid dividends- the band sound tighter than ever, while frontman Adam has grown as a performer, commanding the stage whenever he appeared, with all the cheek, charm charisma of a world-class entertainer.
It was very much a show of two halves, the first relentlessly riding through classics like crowd singalong “Fat Bottomed Girls”, playful “Killer Queen” (with Adam draped himself on a chaise longue drinking champagne) and culminating in a jaw-dropping “Somebody To Love”.
Then came the ‘interval’- a chance for Roger, Brian, and the band to show off their skills (and the first appearance of Freddie alongside Brian May in “Love Of My Life”). This presented one of the only lulls in the evening, but you have to hand it to a pair of guys in their mid/late sixties for their efforts, and undeniable musicality.
The second half introduced Adam back to the stage, flawlessly serenading the crowd a capela with “Save Me”, before the BIGGEST glitter ball descended to accompany “Who Wants To Live Forever”- easily my favourite song of the night. Atmospheric, powerful stuff.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” was a other highlight, Freddie returning onscreen and duetting with Adam. Right at the end of the show, Brian May turned the spotlight on Adam, asking “What do you think of the new member?” At least a full minute of rapturous applause rained down. It was great to see, yet again, a stage full of world-class musicians with nothing but respect for one another, selflessly pushing each other forward to take a bow. Sheer class.
Returning for an encore of “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions” (not sure anyone can own a finale quite like that).
Come back to Yorkshire soon guys. A night out with Queen & Mr Lambert is (to borrow a few words) “dynamite with a laser beam, guaranteed to blow your mind.”

Review: Queen + Adam Lambert @ Manchester Arena

The rock band's new frontman well and truly converted Manchester into a city of Glamberts with this five-star performance
Queen + Adam Lambart
Queen blew our socks off with a special New Year's Eve show that well and truly established their new frontman Adam Lambert.
If people in the UK didn't know who Lambert was before the BBC concert, they were converted Glamberts by the end of the night.
It has been nearly a quarter of a century since the late great Freddie Mercury died but Queen has been reinvented again with an impressive new heir to the throne - American Idol runner-up Lambert – a fabulous, glamorous force of nature in skinny pants and a fantastic line in fingerless gloves and enviable eyeliner.
He isn't meant to be a Freddie clone. But here is a charismatic singer who performs and celebrates Queen's timeless back catalogue, including Another One Bites The Dust, Tie Your Mother Down and Fat Bottomed Girls, exactly the way they should be with added new electricity.
Legendary guitarist Brian May has claimed Lambert, who first sang with them on the American Idol final back in 2009, can sing even higher than Mercury could in a live situation and you feel Freddie would definitely have given his seal of approval. The 32-year-old American possesses a voice that reaches as high as his towering rhinestone-studded platform heels. He's a much better fit than previous frontman, Queen and Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers.
Theatrical crowning moments arrive in a sublime Somebody to Love and Killer Queen – with Lambert seductively sprawled across a purple velvet chaise longue, spraying champagne from his mouth into the crowd. Guaranteed to blow your mind, indeed.
"We're in the presence of one of the greatest guitarists of all time," exclaims a woman behind me. And she isn't wrong.
Brian May and Roger Taylor showcase the talents that made them the rock gods that they are, Brian taking the spotlight for an acoustic set including a video screen duet with Freddie on Love of My Life and later a 10 minute guitar solo adventure.
Manchester bassist Neil Fairclough replaces John Deacon who retired in 1997 and Roger's son joins the fold to play throughout the concert on percussion, sometimes taking over the sticks from his dad.
Roger sings solo on These Are The Days as a video montage of Freddie plays behind him. And Freddie joins them again from the big screen to sing on the iconic Bohemian Rhapsody.
Asked what they think of Lambert the crowd gives a standing ovation. A frontman fit for a Queen.
