I remember David very well on Idol. Every week he did something very inventive with his song choice and arrangement. Since then I feel he's lost himself and gone a little safe. I'm not sure you can blame it all on Cook. The fact that RCA wouldn't release his album and maybe sent him back several times to redo, suggests that this single and maybe others have been popified. He may not have had a lot of choice and been forced to satisfy RCA to get it released.

I like David Cook's new single, liked it on first listen. I have his first album and the sound of this reminds me of his song Declaration, which he co-wrote. His first album radio singles were not ones where he had writing credits so perhaps this is more what he considers his sound.

Poor David. And to make this OT...
I sure hope Adam doesn't dissapoint! First Gaga then Beyonce's crap leaked single and now this....blargh. Maybe that Mercury retrograde astrology thingie is affecting all the songs that are released. :

"A singer with a crystal-clear voice would not be able to deliver a David Cook song like "The Last Goodbye" with the same power and impact that Cook conveys."
This is a line from a review of Cook's single and it's statements like this that piss me off. Why on earth people persist with this notion that you can not convey emotion, heart, or soul with a clear voice? This idea that rasp, gravel or grit in the voice somehow automatically conveys emotion or soul is pure D bullshit. What pisses me off even more and makes it difficult for me to truly enjoy David's songs is that he showed on Idol that he was perfectly capable of singing with a clear voice but on his album and in the live performances that I've seen recordings of he always sounds hoarse to me and this is hailed as being "authentic" but when Adam sings with a clear voice he is seen to be "fake".
Excuse my rant but this is one of my biggest pet peeves with the "rock crowd" of music snobs. If I never had to hear the term "authentic" again it could come to soon.

I don't enjoy gravelly voices much--makes my own throat hurt a bit. When I listen to current rock, most of the male voices sound the same to me. I'll think it's Cook but it turns out to be another group (I can remember the names). I don't understand how their voices get gravelly. I've never had a kid in school that sounded like that. Even kids that don't sing well, sing with more of a speaking-timbre voice, not gravel. Is is a put-on? Adam does it sometimes to sound more rock and it makes me fear for his voice.

Adam will have a lot of song material ready for TPTB to review for Adam 2. What I worry about is that TPTB will be so clueless as to what is current, what the fans are interested in and lack the understanding of Adam’s vision for the album that we will get a bunch of irrelevant, outdated, cookie cutter music. I seem to remember reading somewhere that David Cook had a bunch of material, pitched his album choices and was sent back to the drawing board. He may have been trying for more of the rock/alternate edge that he seems to like. Not sure if that is true but that could have something to do with the delay in his second album coming out. The “leaked” alum debut song is pretty run of the mill. Have listened several times but has not grown on me yet. I thought he did great on Idol, saw him on tour and he puts on a good show. Just not sure that he is going to get the airplay and attention to recapture the momentum he had after Idol. Still like his Analog Heart stuff better than his post Idol album. Adam is working with a lot of great people. Would love to be a fly on the wall for those sessions. Just not sure where everything will end up once the final cuts for the album are decided. Anxiously waiting to see where it all leads. In the meantime, hope we get a few “leaked’ snippets of recordings to gauge where things are headed.

I can tell Cook's vocie from others easily. The one thing I really like about the new single is that it sounds just like him. I heard it and said, "Yup, that's David Cook." The 2 I have trouble distinguishing are Daughtry and Nickeback. The only way I can tell, usually, is by knowing their songs. I like gravelly voices. I like Taylor Hicks. I flove Bob Seger. My favorite season 10 contestant, right now, is Haley. However, I do not agree with the reviewer that you need a gravely voice to convey emotion. IMO, that is just an idiotic thing to say!!

Does anyone know what kind of site this is? Is this an actual music critic or is this another version of an Examiner.com type of site? I ask because this review almost sounds like a fan review.
