Hi Cassie and everybody! Wow! I was totally blown away when I found this thread! I’ve spent the last couple of days going through the posts and links here and I’ve learned so much – and enjoyed it thoroughly! Even though I’m not a musician myself, I have some knowledge of music, both in practice and in theory, since I took piano lessons for eight years when I was a kid, as well as violin lessons for two years, and I also sang in our school choir for several years. I also had to take lessons on the theoretical side of music, since I was studying piano in a musical academy and it was compulsory there. No lessons in singing though, which is actually a pity, since I enjoyed singing in the choir very much. A couple of things came to my mind when I was going through the messages. There was some discussion about how Adam very rarely misses notes. Since I’m not a professional, I don’t have a trained ear that can pick up that kind of errors very easily – unless the miss is a really obvious one. I’ve spent several hours listening to Adam’s performances that I have found in the net, mostly in Youtube, and so far I’ve found those misses to be really rare in Adam’s case. And since we are often dealing with recordings that are not always of the best quality, and a lot depends also on what kind of equipment you are using to listen to them, I think it is not always so easy to find out why something sounds “funny”. However, one of these rare misses, I think, is in the end of Adam’s performance of “Black or White” in AI ( youtu.be/fYlUg1fOdRU at about 2:39) – actually it is the final note of the song. My ear tells me it is about a half degree lower than it should be, and I’d like to hear your opinion on this. Are my ears lying, is this a recording issue, or am I right? And no, I have no intention of starting an error hunting mission, I’m just curious about the accuracy of my musical ear. Another thing that hit me was in Cassie’s comments about Adam’s Nikka Costa “duel”. Cassie, the second point in your list of comments was: After listening to Angelina’s program about Adam’s voice, I had thought for several times that it would be really interesting – and wonderful – to have the opportunity to be able to listen to Adam singing in the same room with you completely acoustic. No mic, no electronics, just him and his voice. Then you could really hear the “pure” Adam! Well, I don’t think that is going to happen – at least to me – anytime soon, so the duel is the second best thing, so far. Okay, enough! Anyway, thank you, Cassie, and all others, who have posted here! - Mia -

It is a bit flat but I don't think it is as much as a half-step (semitone) low. I, also, would love to hear his voice raw and natural. Since I am used to being around operatic singers, I know that feeling of how they fill up a room. I would love to hear Adam in a nice size room with a proper amount of reverb for a singer. I think my brain might explode. Cassie, another question for you. When Angelina says "manufactured" vibrato, what does that mean. Manufactured as opposed to what other type of vibrato?

Anyway, thank you, Cassie, and all others, who have posted here! - Mia - So glad you found us! Welcome. Good ear about BorWhite. The final note was flat. Adam, in a couple of interviews, said he was not happy with that performance. That the adrenaline got the best of him, performing for one of the first times live on the Idol stage. He tends to be his own harshest critic. As for hearing Adam's voice unmiked, in a naturally resonant room, I think that is a dream shared by many musicians and folks who appreciate the voice without enhancement or bells and whistles. I think the closest we have is the original AI audition with no mic except for the mic used to record the video, and the few snippets we have of Adam singing for the mentors, again without any hand held mic. Oh, and the Happy Birthday to S*&@^#r captured on a crappy home video. No mic anywhere near that one. Have to say, they sound pretty damned good. But, to actually experience it live, in the same room.... would be divine. I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility for Adam to strip it all out and do a concert live and unaided. That's where he started in musical theater. At some point in the future, when he is an established vocal icon, I can see him wanting to show us that raw talent and artistry. At least, that is my fantasy.

Mia asked:
Cassie, another question for you. When Angelina says "manufactured" vibrato, what does that mean. Manufactured as opposed to what other type of vibrato? Many adult singers have a natural vibrato. The oscillations in pitch occur as a byproduct of producing a note in the vocal cords. However, with many others, they naturally produce a straight tone. In those cases, there are technical things they can to with muscles in their diaphragm, throat and/or mouth/jaw to create that oscillation. Those would be "manufactured." A skilled, trained singer knows how to control the amount of natural vibrato in their voice, and add to it by using those muscles. You can see the muscles in the back of Adam's mouth, upper throat and tongue in that clip. They are producing the oscillation that creates/enhances the vibrato on that note.
Hope that is somewhat clear???

Adam's voice as pain therapy..... yes, I can see that could work. I truly do believe that there is something other-worldly about that voice that causes our brains to feel happy. Sorry you are going thru a rough time, but glad that Adam helps. As for Jessie, do you have a link to samples? I don't know anything about her. What should I listen to?

Cassie did you watch The Voice? I really like the first episode and the best thing was they got to sing an entire song. What a novel concept. Watched it and enjoyed it thoroughly. First off, no cringe-worthy auditions by people who cannot sing. Not all jaw-dropping vocals or breathtaking voices, but all pleasant to listen to. Secondly, the judges have cred and legitimacy. They are making music and selling singles/albums currently. And, they have a healthy ego investment in choosing and mentoring the winner of the competition. They CARE about these singers doing well. I will be watching next week. And interested in how the rest of the format works out.

cassieI absolutely love Jessie J. I wasnt so interested in an artist before and after Adam for a long long time. Her voice, her performance blow me away. Sexy but not cheap, with real passion. I would really love it if you could listen to her performance on SNL "mama knows best" and tell me what you think. She wrote that song. Its the second song from the top. idolator.com/5794242/jessie-j-mamma-knows-best-price-tag-snlAnd also this performance she did on a train station in NY She wrote this song also
