Re: fan wars
Anyone on the thread an anthropologist/sociologist? It is instinctive or genetic for humans to think in terms of black/white, on/off, good/bad, yes/no, win/lose? Simple binary opposite functions?
Or is this something that is characteristic of western culture? American culture? European culture?
I don't know where this drive to pit one person against another, to pick one person or another, to support one person or another, to degrade one person over the other...where does it come from? Seems absurd to me. Why do we have to pick between apples and oranges? Or as I said a while back, apples and celery???

As Simon said once, "I think we've finally found our world-wide star". Search over, as far as I'm concerned. And THIS is why I love this place SFM!!! You guys have everything right at your fingertips. I haven't even had time to do my avi yet because I'm always behind on the threads (and I'm intimidated by getting the sizing right. LOL) Pretty amazing that Simon said that. But I've got to admit, when he was right, HE WAS RIGHT. (and really, that was most of the time in MHO)

It really does!! I've watched it like three times in a row. From little boy creative adorkable to fierce sex god tearing up the stage. Regarding fan wars, since I almost never go to MJ's or anyplace else where Idol people congregate, I don't know, but I DO think there is sometimes some animosity with say Cook and Kris fans, but not much. And you're right, they always seem to involve Adam. I think it's largely because no matter what, he overshadows everyone else. He has the most media attention, the most Twitter followers, the successful tour, the major collaborators ... they always have to try to knock down the person at the top. I say let them try; it only brings more notoriety to Adam. What I can't take is the disgusting, hateful stuff; I try not to give those freaks any attention other than to block and report, but still it enrages. I am an Idol Loon and have been BSC about the show since season 1. I would say the only 2 seasons that did not spawn big fan wars was S1 and S7. S1 because it was so new and the show manufactured a romance between Kelly and Justin. There was some hate from Tamyra fans though. S2 huge fan wars! S3, the same because of the 3 divas, Fantasia, Jennifer, and ??the third??. Season 4, between the Bo and Carrie fans, "YES!!" 'Carrie was boring,' 'a rocker can never win,' etc. Season 5 may have been the worst. So much hate for Daughtry that still continues, to this day, from many Taylor fans. There were even hate boards for Daughtry. Season 6, yes. Lots of hate for Jordin from Blake fans. Season 7, David Cook and Archuleta always treated each other like big and little brothers, so I think this may be a season that had the smallest amount of fan wars. However, Cook fans are now jealous of the attention that Adam gets, both in the press and from RCA. They are all praying for huge numbers for his upcoming album. (I like Cook, a lot and am also hoping for his success. Album #2 is scary for Idols.) Which brings us to Season 8 and as Susie says, everyone has the guy at the top as their target. :-/ (Sorry, too long and maybe off topic. I can delete it if Q3 so desires.) Entertaining, informative and relatively unbiased, this should stay. Thank you, I've never understood fan wars. Not to say that I don't get mad when I hear about someone dissing Adam, because I do. I still haven't forgiven Clay A for the bleeding ears comments, Danny G for his family's nonsense that I never heard him apologize for or JD for not laying down the law for his fans about abuse. What goes around, comes around or maybe Karma will bite them in the ass.

What you have described is classic childish thinking! No matter what age they are, some people do not seem to grow up. JMO. YMMV Of course, I admit to enjoying some shallow-end 12-year-old thinking on occasion.

fan wars are a result of human beings competitive nature. They are not unique to Idol. Britney and Christina fans have warred for years, NSYNC and BSB fans warred. mariah and whitney fans, etc.
people have the irrational need for their favorite to be "the best" even if it's ridiculous.
The funniest part to me of the fan wars is that usually the most butthurt are the ones who claim that someone who is doing remarkably better is somehow threatened or jealous of the one who isn't doing so well.
