Re: fan wars Anyone on the thread an anthropologist/sociologist? It is instinctive or genetic for humans to think in terms of black/white, on/off, good/bad, yes/no, win/lose? Simple binary opposite functions? Or is this something that is characteristic of western culture? American culture? European culture? I don't know where this drive to pit one person against another, to pick one person or another, to support one person or another, to degrade one person over the other...where does it come from? Seems absurd to me. Why do we have to pick between apples and oranges? Or as I said a while back, apples and celery??? I'm not a sociologist, but I am a teacher of young children. What you have described is classic childish thinking! No matter what age they are, some people do not seem to grow up. JMO. YMMV I'm no expert, but I have always been good at sports and with 3 boys, have been involved in my share of kid's sports. I'm naturally competitive and I don't think that trait in itself is good or bad. In athletics, I know that it's one thing you can't teach someone. My middle son is very coordinated but not competitive. It took me a while to realize when he was young that our games would take longer because I was trying to let him win and he was trying to let ME win. My oldest son is very competitive DURING THE GAME, but the rest of his day was the same, win or lose. He kept it on the field/court. I have to catch myself to not take some of the H8 out there to heart. And I try not to gloat when articles say Kris who? I absolutely agree that the competitive instinct needs to be tempered with maturity. Sometimes it's hard to rise above. Adam seems to always be the target. Who hates Carrie Underwood? Mostly, I just want Adam to do well in the real world. Idol seems to apply to him less and less. Where I have to watch myself getting caught up now is worrying about the BSC fans. I don't want them doing more harm than good. I guess that's why ATOP is so comfortable. So many here are in the know but put things in perspective. By the time I learn about an new "gate", the wonderful fans here have me laughing about it rather than having a stroke or sending some tweet I'll be embarrassed about later. (sorry Anoop. : )

fan wars are a result of human beings competitive nature. They are not unique to Idol. Britney and Christina fans have warred for years, NSYNC and BSB fans warred. mariah and whitney fans, etc. people have the irrational need for their favorite to be "the best" even if it's ridiculous. The funniest part to me of the fan wars is that usually the most butthurt are the ones who claim that someone who is doing remarkably better is somehow threatened or jealous of the one who isn't doing so well. It is interesting; and not just about singers. Look at sports. There was someone killed in L.A. just a few weeks ago that war rooting for a San Francisco team. Fights break out at every San Diego/Oakland football game. Then there are the soccer hooligans. It's insane. It goes back to the days of gladiators and likely to ancient times. "The Hunger Games" reminds me of gladiators, American Idol and Survivor rolled into one.

ITA... and what really is interesting.. the same interest could be generated by saying GOOD things..instead of BAD.. "you catch more flies with honey" .. I am sure that saying is still used for a reason.. .. Adam sure knows how to werk it too.

I feel like I'm living in a very innocent world LOL, maintaining mostly just my RL and RL hobbies. I haven't followed any particular artist so closely, ever, before Adam. I like music - different kinds of music, I listen to it all the time. Seems I've lived in a happy bubble with it, listening to what I like without paying much attention to what happens around it. I haven't known about a) fandoms (thought "fans" are mostly teenagers...) b) fan wars (whaaaat??) c) fanfiction (whaaaat? what's that? OMG) d) urban dictionary (geeezzh! OMG!) e) a lot of other things either :D f) oh, and have learnt a lot of new words! LOL Stanning & internet opens up a new wide world. I don't understand the fan wars, what is the point? There should be space for all artists, what do the fan wars help in anything.. ???. It's the artist that has to make it (success) himself, not the fans fighting for him, against some other artist's fans ???.

Zinnia, the fanwars don't accomplish anything. They are entertaining for some people (I know I enjoy giving someone a good bitchslap once in a while LOL).
As for fans only being teenagers, I think this forum proves that's not the case. Jimmy Buffet has huge loyal fans and I dare say 90% are over the age of 40.
either way, get used to the fanwars if you plan on following Adam... he'll be be the object of many a bitter disgruntled fan's frustration and bitterness and it will get worse the more successful be becomes.

But, dear ZINNIA, your point of view would require people to be compassionate and/or have common sense, both of which are sorely lacking in the world today. Love your posts and appreciate your help with the transcriptions of Tutka.

I feel like Adam is so special that OF COURSE he's going to do well. But what if you went this nuts over someone and they weren't getting any recognition from the outside world. I can see where I would start resenting the "competition". Boo Hoo, RCA likes the other guy better. If my guy got that gig, he would be in the papers, too, etc. It's easier to back a winner. That's why teams like the Yankees for example have fans all over the country. We just were smart enough to fall for GNAFL. I'm not defending fan wars, but I've backed losing teams before. Winners are more fun. ;D

You are the expert, not I. But there was more going on than just the Bo/Carrie fan wars in S4. Constantine fans hated Carrie (and vice versa) and Anthony and Scott (remember him??lol) fans hated Constantine. It was WWIII all over the place. I was a C fan at the time but ON THE SIDELINES! So I knew who hated who. ;D
But I must say that I have NEVER EVER seen the degree of ugliness that has been directed at Adam. Until this recent episode it had tapered off some because most boards will not allow it. It still simmers under the surface however and this latest is the pot boiling over.
Thanks danilo for the great photos!!
