I have been trying to think of something equivalent for an analogy. Holst, glampoon, can you help? It's a little akin to seeing a painting and days later being able to draw it accurately using the exact same shades of color to match the original. It is not something that can be taught. It is an innate sense for pitch, and Adam obviously has it. A rare ability to go with the rest of his rare abilities. Isn't that what's called perfect pitch? Or that's something different? Maybe this is "pitch memory", like you have "muscle memory" (but muscle memory is something you develop through constant practice, so maybe not the best analogy).... This isn't perfect pitch -- I think pitch memory is a good term though. I can do this sometimes and will sing what I remember hearing. I do agree with Cassie in that this is something that can't be taught. I hear a song in my head and then just sing what I hear--I can usually do this with a song I know well because it is in my "sense memory". Since the Shamir song was one that Adam had been singing along to a lot, he probably had a good "sense memory" of the song and was able to replicate it in the same key. It is a gift and until recently, I didn't realize it wasn't something most people could do! LOL. I know it has helped me when singing in the past, but the negative side is that if I sing a song I have listened to another person sing repeatedly, it also makes it more difficult to put an original spin on it when I sing it without having to really think about it. For example, when I sing Bohemian Rhapsody, I tend to sing it as it was recorded with Queen with the same inflections and such. If I were to sing it publicly, I would have to deliberately work on getting the original version out of my head and replace it with my own. It's like having to unlearn a habit in order to replace it with a new one. I hope that makes sense -- often time what seems logical to a singer (as in, "well of course I do this and it works") is not really logical to others. Sort of like when my friends who are good with math try to explain something to me and it sounds like some alien language...it makes sense to them! I hope this helps.

Cassie....the test says I have some pitch issues!lol It is a tough test. And probably normed on those young, 18 year old ears, too. Plus, as we have learned from our pitch discussion problems in the past, sometimes having ears that are very sensitive to the minute differences of pitch is a curse, not a blessing, since once heard, one cannot un-hear a flat note, or ignore it. As long as you hear well enough to enjoy Adam, it is all good!
