Skylar I saw most of the PBS special on Obama and Romney.. I thought the program did a pretty good job showing their backgrounds and their basic characters . Where I think you are right to feel betrayed ,Is the only accomplishment they showed of Obama's was Romney care. Obama has done many incredible things, with no help at all from the Republicans in Congress. I can tell that you voted for Obama, So did I, after Hillary lost to him. IMHO,Obama has been a great president in foreign affairs,Woman's rights, college rights, health care,LGBT rights, and taking out OsamaBenLadan(sp.). If PBS mentioned any of the above ,I missed it. Where B.O. failed in my opinion was in the financial crisis by putting the foxes in charge of the hen houses. He kept the very same people aboard that had caused the banking crisis. Still in all he has accomplished more than many presidents have accomplished ,with both hands tied behind his back and a Republican party that wanted only to be rid of him. This at the expense of their own country..Strangely enough, if Romney gets in, PBS will be gone, just like so many of our rights. I guess PBS is self destructive hugs to you.. Melody Agreed!! The only thing I disagree with is that the director/editor did a good job showing their backgrounds and their basic characters. Obamas character was slandered in a hundred subtle ways. As a maker of video documentaries there are so many things one can do to make someone look good or bad, darker lighting vs. lighter, subtle minor fearful music vs. major reassuring music, the people they choose to interview and the way they cut the clips to the benefit or the belittlement of the person they are talking about. They hauled up some ridiculous information, and interviewed ridiculous people about a "druggie group" they said Obama was a part of. They played up that he was essentially a bastard child, who had no friends. They purposefully skewered him and assassinated his character. Instead of pointing out how much more amazing he is considering the difficult circumstances of his childhood. Given what he walked into. Given the amount of money that was spent on a war based on lies and false pretense (at least 4x as much as Obama has spent), he has been absolutely amazing. How could anyone expect him to fix things in one go round? This is an utterly insane world of fun house mirrors. There are no words.
When did this air??? I missed it! I'm astounded that PBS would (subtlety or overtly) support MR given his promise to stop subsidizing PBS.

This is my first post on this tread, hope it is not OT:
MoMa serves ‘a taste of Finland’
Details Parent Category: Finland Category: Domestic 12Oct2012. As part of the Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMa) Century of the Child exhibition in New York, MoMa’s Cafe 2 has served Finnish school lunches to hungry New Yorkers for two weeks, Yle (Leena: =Public radio in Finland) reports. Thus, the exhibition commemorates Finland’s public education and the fact that in 1948, Finland became the first country in the world to serve free, regulated school meals to children on a large scale. Cafe 2’s lunch menu has been organised by Petteri Luoto, who has been associated with a number of gourmet restaurants in Helsinki and Turku.

Does anyone remember the film Gentleman's Agreement with Gregory Peck.. ? No, what was it about? Old movie.. A reporter ,GP. lives the life of a Jewish man at a time when Jews couldn't get jobs,or get into many colleges, etc. in the United States. He writes about antisemitism ,after living as a Jewish man. Cross in the Closet.. No better way to find out about another person's experiences than stepping into their shoes.I'm really happy that this author did so and it changed his perspective about the LGBT community and the church he went to.

Also the great, great book Black Like Me was revolutionary when it came out 50 years ago. A white reporter pretended to be black and experienced so much of life that he had to end the experiment early because he got so depressed. Still an eye-opening read even today.

I did not watch the PBS special....actually been trying to avoid US politics and that ain't easy...whew...BUT I went to a lecture by John Ralston Saul last night. He is probably Canada's premier public intellect...and that breed is few and far between in our world, sadly. He is married to Adrienne Clakson who was our Governor General about 10 years back. He has written both fiction and non...I think my very favourite was VOLTAIRE'S BASTARD...it is amazing and I heartedly recommend it to all. He is also the current [and past] president of the international writer's organization PPEN.
My entry point here was that in the course of the evening...he spoke briefly of meeting Barrack Obama...before he even entered the Democratic race against Hilary and when he was first coming to the notice of the general public. He noted that he wrote in his notebook at the time...and he told Adrienne after that meeting that he thought he had just met the first Black US president...he chuckled then and said he did not think that was also the NEXT US president...
His analysis of Obama's performance was just that his expertise is in Foreign affairs ad Social Justice but his biggest weakness is in Economics and he needed time to get up to snuff on the workings of the PO....and too bad the biggest emergencies were not in his strongest areas. H is confident that the next term will be much better. and ...goddess forbid Romney got in as that would set the US back centuries....
sorry for the Canadian intervention...I try to avoid that unless in close personal spaces...but this time I am quoting someone else...and he is a big 'someone' on the international stage.
John Ralston Saul was my first intellectual crush/hero.
