The origins of rock and roll are not really known and are still being debated. The reason is that this form of music evolved in the South Central United States (primarily in Mississippi, Memphis, TN, and North Alabama) from the fusion of three different musical traditions which had developed from African-American and Scotts-Irish-American musical traditions – blues/R&B, gospel and Southern Appalachian hills music (Country music).

The expression rock and roll was used in the early 20th century as a sexual analogy and was used in and to describe R&B music as early as the later 1930’s. The name Rock and Roll became popularized to white audiences in 1951 by Cleveland, Ohio, disc jockey Alan Freed who began playing this music style and used the term "rock and roll" to describe it,

By the mid-1950’s there were two distinct forms of Rock & Roll:

- "Rockabilly" based on American Country music, usually played and recorded by white singers such as Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis, who drew mainly on the country roots of the music.

- “Rhythm and Blues” based on Blues and Gospel music and usually played and recorded by African-American singers such as Fats Domino and Little Richard.

Some American musicians, most notably Elvis, fused these two streams of music but the evolution was also international. In fact, most of Elvis’ early hits were countrified arrangements songs by black blues artists from the 1940’s and 1950’s, examples: "That's All Right", "Blue Moon of Kentucky", "Baby, Let's Play House", "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" and "Hound Dog".

This tradition of reworking old blues songs continued in the 1960’s and 1970’s with songs ranging from Bill Haley's cover of "Shake, Rattle and Roll" (Big Joe Turner's adult love song turned into a teen dance number) to Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love (this cover of left the sex in and just metalized it).

My Theory

I think there are two factors that took the sex out of Rock and Roll:

1. The shift from live Rock and Roll to mostly broadcast/audio Rock and Roll. Without the live performances, there was no way for artists to express the sexual content of songs.

2. The rise of Pop and Hip Hop/Urban music which was filled with sexual content leaving Rock and Roll became dominated by acts like U2, Nickelback and Maroon 5.

My Request: Bring the Sexy Back to Rock and Roll. And I know just the man to do it.

American Idol alum Adam Lambert has been working on his sophomore album, and he told MTV News that he has written about 18 to 20 songs for the effort. "I've been spending the past two and a half months in the studio," Lambert said. "I'm writing most of the material with people myself this time. I'm really involved. It's really exciting because I think I'm making my dream album. I know that sounds a bit clichéd, but I'm making exactly what I want to listen to." He added that he has been working with writers such as Ryan Tedder, Nikka Costa and Sia, but there is no set release date for the CD.

I have changed my recommendation on VH1 Do Something Awards to DO NOT VOTE

On 5.25.11 I recommended voting in this competition. Since then I have done some additional research and testing.

1. Voting for the celebrity online awards is just a way to build awareness for the real awards show.

2, Adam is not nominated for any award. The only way to vote for Adam is as a write-in. It takes much longer to cast a write-in vs. voting for a nominee. There is no limit on voting. So 10 minutes of Adam fan voting time can be wiped out in about 1 minute by someone voting for a nominee.

Poll rating (0=lowest rating, 10=highest rating)

Adam benefit: 3 – a win could raise awareness of The Trevor Project.
Fairness: 3 - there is an attempt to limit voting for just one category but it is very easy to work around.
Potential to win: 9 – The voting structure makes a write-in vote very timeconsuming.
Fan value: 2
RECOMMENDATION – vote only if you are willing to work really hard.


About the awards: DoSomething.org and VH1 have partnered to present The Do Something Awards to honor young people's commitment to social change. VH1 is doing a series of online contests to promote this event – they have nominees but also accept write-ins. One of the celebrity categories could help Adam but, more importantly make a difference.
