I think it is very important not to confuse government action with the citizens of a country. Any country. Russia has a very mixed history on gay rights but I would say it is about equal to the US if you compare the past 50 years. Homosexuality activity was illegal in much of the US until the Supreme Court ruling in 2003. That is only 8 years ago. And have we forgotten Kent State and Selma so quickly? ETA: Not excusing or apologizing for any of these actions -- there is no justification for beating people who just want to march in favor of a point of view. Just responded to some of the press reports and tweets about this. I cannot see how anyone in the US can be so righteous about this -- Gays have problems here too. It must be possible to criticize government action without criticizing an entire country. ITA... I have a degree in Russian Studies and can say without a doubt that although Russians are for the most part caucasian, their history is vastly different than any other European country. This is a country that is still working on true religious freedom. Something we pretty much take for granted these days. The wall may have come down but you can't change ingrained societal norms & culture that have been in place for centuries as quickly. Change will happen, just not as quick as we would like. |
