I understand what you are saying but still, ALLOWED is rough word in this instance. Like saying they shouldn't have ALLOWED gay marriage in Vermont. States rights is one of those subjects which cause us to fall on different sides of the fence in different instances and that is just not how things work. It made me sick when KKK was allowed to march in Chicago suburb but if they didn't have that right, as long as it was non-violent, neither did a gay pride group. The US is a very tough place when it comes to many issues. We can't have the First Åmendment only for subjects we agree with for instance. It used to be discussed that there should be a standard of decency for things like what is pornographic and what is not. Then came the subject of who decided where the line should be. Would it be Larry Flynt or Jerry Falwell, both dead now if I'm not mistaken but at the time were the examples used. And we are a republic. And States have the right to do some stupid things! But Americans also have the right to free speech on political issues. So at least I have the right to say that the Tennessee legislature is filled with bigots and morons. Lifeguard, I *do* intellectually know how states rights work. But, the State Department answers for us as a country, and as a country the schizophrenic attitudes towards LBGT makes it, IMO, difficult for us to chide another country about their attitudes. Even if - as NoAngel noted - if it was couched in language about freedom of assembly versus the actual LBGT issue. ETA: [wry grin] Q3 - noticed you added greatly to your post since I started writing. Wound up stating essentially the same thing!

Mys*&@^#r, did Adam walk down the aisle alone or with Sauli and Lane? With Sauli, but Sauli can't keep up with Adam's stride. He was about 4-6 feet behind Adam. When Adam is in HBIC mode and trying to purposefully get someplace, I don't think there's anyone who could keep up with him. Same thing happened when they were leaving, after Cam's concert at The El Rey. Everyone in Adam's party was a good 6 ft behind him! Thanks, mys*&@^#r, I can just picture him walking down the aisle in stride and everybody in the audience looking at him in awe of his charisma. BTW, is the board loading very slooowly?

[ ETA: NoAngel -- the irony of the US State Department issuing a statement criticizing the Russian Police for arresting and hitting Dan Choi in the nose just strikes me as unforgivable. This is the same man that the US Government discharged from the US Army as unfit to serve. It would have been better for the US to let other countries make a statement. Believe me, I agree! Even more unforgivable and disingenuous to hide behind the 'freedom of assembly' issue and minimize the gay rights aspect, knowing full well that we have no leg to stand on in terms of LGBT equality in the U.S. Ugh.

It's late and we're about done here. I have a few thoughts regarding the Star Spangled Banner and whether Adam has been asked, or is willing, to perform it.
I am clueless as to whether Adam - or anyone, of any persuasion, culture, or population - would be reluctant to give voice to this anthem. We, as a nation, are not perfect. Regarding human rights, we have a long way to go, no doubt.
What I love about the words of Francis Scott Key is that he asked the question. It's a question I reflect upon every time I stand to honor our imperfect nation.
"Oh say, does that star spangled banner yet wave, o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?"
In those words I see my own frailties. I realize, again, there is work to be done. If Adam were to sing these lyrics; these prophetic words written over 200 years ago, I would feel my heart literally leap from my chest - as it did, upon hearing him at Miramar. Adam's voice embraces the passion and the yearning of this question. For himself, and for all of us, may we continue to ask, and search and strive and seek, and awaken and be humbled and learn.
