Research in the UK has shown that two thirds of young gay, lesbian and bisexual pupils have experienced direct bullying in Britain’s schools. 92% of 1,145 lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils reported being subject to verbal abuse, and 41% had been physically assaulted. Less than a quarter (23 per cent) of young gay people have been told that homophobic bullying is wrong in their school. In schools that have said homophobic bullying is wrong, gay young people are 60 per cent more likely not to have been bullied. Link: www.stonewall.org.uk/education_for_all/research/1790.aspThis is only tangentially related, but I saw it the other day when we were talking about Russia and forgot to post. It's a summary of a survey in the Advocate about changing attitudes towards homosexuality worldwide: www.advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2011/05/30/Survey_World_Becoming_More_Accepting/"The study finds that "overwhelmingly, societies have become more accepting of homosexual behavior." Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, and Belgium-Flanders (are) the most accepting. Four countries -- Russia, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, and Latvia -- were the only nations to show a decrease in acceptance. The study also shows more acceptance among younger adults, those with more education, those who attend religious services less often, and city dwellers. " ETA: according to the study, the UK is the fifth most accepting country and the US is 8th or 9th. (we are one of the countries with the most extreme opinions at either end). Thanks for posting this. Very interesting. No data on this but I am not sure that acceptance of homosexuality or lack of of acceptance may be less related to acceptance of bullying. I know many devote, conservative Christians who believe firmly that homosexuality is "against the law of God" but who are also intolerant of bullying.

Q3 deleted the comment that you quoted. There have been several responses that make no sense without the comments that they were responded to -- so I deleted them too.

Well, just because you are over 50, it doesn't mean that sexuality, or lust dies. And if I am going to fantasize, I def would prefer a hot, sexy young man (of legal age ) with a glambulge, to a saggy, wrinkled old man with thinning hair and a limp d***. j/s My take is that what goes on in people's minds is their own affair. It's the "sharing it with the world" that gets to me. I think this board is pretty "wink, wink, nudge, nudge" which is harmless, and most of the racier fan comments tend to be in fairly hidden coms, but I've seen comments left on public news articles from people with clearly no self-awareness. Tweeting it to Adam directly definitely skeeves me out /o\. Personally I also am skeeved out by the "glam" vocabulary (especially regarding his assets)... but since Adam said he's not going to retire the term glamberts I will continue to solider on and tolerate that label at least... LOL I don't see a problem with making jokes about it--esp since I think he is a nice looking man but I have ZERO sexual attraction to him--as long as it's all in good fun and seen as such. But yeah I too get a little skeeved when people have absolutely no shame and are totally srs about it. And age has isn't a factor for me--young, old, whatever. But whatever, it could always be worse. Better than, say, death threats. LOL. Uh oh. Just saw all the Q deletions....should I not have answered this? I am confused.?? Q3 comment: You are the first one who did not quote the deleted posts that were part of the deleted Idol discussion.
The comments you quoted are general or I guess related to Adam and I will leave.

I know Great Britain tends to be majority non-religious. I was wondering when I read the article tigerlily posted earlier and read the comments if there was some kind of small-section fundamental surge right now. A person was literally hijacking the article to preach. I thought it a little strange since I've read so much about the UK's ambivalence for religion these days. Again I'm reminded of Rabbitrabbit's point about when a faction knows they're going down, they fight that much ruthlessly. ( Rabbitrabbit, I know I'm paraphrasing that badly. If you're around, can you clarify? I loved the point.)

I think the comment string you are referring to on that earlier article was just a random roaming religious nutcase, not particularly symptomatic. Although, the place my in-laws come from in the UK has become more fundamentalist among the existing religious community in recent years, hmm... You paraphrased it well, it's just a theory that forces of injustice/oppression tend to fight particularly hard just before giving up/being defeated. I read about it in an article about women in India, and a recent rise in Sati and dowry deaths that people were having trouble explaining in an increasingly modernized country.
